Dream season for CAM ends at State with 10-2 loss to Newman Catholic

The 2017 CAM Baseball team accomplished something that no team in school history had done, made it to the State tournament. On Friday that’s where the season would end with a 10-2 Quarterfinal round loss to Newman Catholic of Mason City at Principal Park in Des Moines.

The Cougars got off to a great start with Marcus Daugherty getting on base on a walk and Thomas Hensley following with a single. When Hensley tried to steal second, a poor throw to second base allowed Daugherty to come in to score and Hensley headed to third. Another Knight throwing error over to third allowed Hensley to come home on the same play. CAM didn’t allow a Newman Catholic run until the third and held a 2-1 lead into the 5th.

Newman Catholic then had the bats come alive in the bottom of the 5th, scoring 9 runs on 6 hits. Evan Paulus grabbed the lead for the Knights with a 2 run homer following Ben Fitzgerald’s lead-off double. The hit rally would continue and the Cougars pitching staff hurt themselves with 4 walks in the inning as well.

CAM couldn’t get anything going on offense in their final two innings and saw their dream season come to a close with the 10-2 loss.  Mitchell Williamson took the loss in relief. He went 1 inning allowing 6 earned runs on 5 hits with 1 walk.  Nick Holste went 3 1/3 innings to start the game allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. Marcus Daugherty came on in the 5th to allow 3 runs on 1 hit with 2 walks. Austin Chester finished the game with 1 2/3 innings allowing 1 hit and 2 walks. Evan Paulus went the distance for Newman Catholic allowing 2 runs, 1 earned on 2 hits with 1 walk and 10 strikeouts.

CAM ends the season at 22-8. Newman Catholic improves to 33-3 and will head to the semifinals next Thursday at Principal Park.

Mariners send top prospect O’Neill to Cardinals for Gonzales

Sports

July 21st, 2017 by Ric Hanson

SEATTLE (AP) – The Seattle Mariners have acquired young left-hander Marco Gonzales from the St. Louis Cardinals in exchange for top outfield prospect Tyler O’Neill.  The clubs pulled off the surprising deal Friday, the second move to add pitching help in as many days for the Mariners. Seattle acquired veteran reliever David Phelps from Miami on Thursday.

This time, Seattle added a young starter who will have a number of seasons of club control but paid a hefty price. O’Neill was considered one of the top prospects in Seattle’s farm system and had been on a tear of late at Triple-A Tacoma. The 22-year-old O’Neill had 19 home runs in 93 games at Triple-A.

Gonzales, 25, is still working his way back from missing all the 2016 season due to elbow surgery. He pitched in one major league game this season for the Cardinals.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Cardinals pitcher Trevor Rosenthal was late covering first base on a two-out grounder by Jose Reyes that turned into a game-winning single in the ninth inning, lifting the New York Mets over St. Louis 3-2 Thursday. Reyes’ fourth career walkoff RBI gave the Mets a split of the four-game series.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brandon Moss drove in four runs, Mike Moustakas had three RBIs and the Kansas City Royals routed the error-prone Detroit Tigers 16-4 Thursday night. Eric Hosmer and Whit Merrifield homered for the Royals, who moved within 1½ games of first-place Cleveland in the AL Central. The 16 runs and 19 hits were season highs for Kansas City.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State’s basketball team has added Zoran Talley, last season’s Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year, as a graduate transfer. The Cyclones announced Thursday that Talley, a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 11.3 points in 2016-17 for Old Dominion, will join the team after he graduates in August.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has added Zoran Talley, last season’s Conference USA Sixth Man of the Year, as a graduate transfer. The Cyclones announced Thursday that Talley, a 6-foot-7 forward who averaged 11.3 points in 2016-17 for Old Dominion, will join the team after he graduates in August.

Talley redshirted as a freshman for the Monarchs before playing two seasons. He will have two years of eligibility for Iowa State. The addition of Talley, along with fellow graduate transfers Hans Brace and Jeff Beverly, is designed to help the Cyclones rebuild next season without falling too far down the Big 12 standings.

Iowa State (24-11) lost four senior starters to graduation after winning the Big 12 Tournament last season.

Iowa receives $5 million donation to endow athletic director

Sports

July 20th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The University of Iowa athletic department has received a $5 million donation to endow its athletic director position. The school announced Thursday that boosters Henry and Patricia Tippie made the commitment to create Iowa’s first endowed position in athletics. The school also says an annual payout from the Tippie donation will be available to athletic director Gary Barta to spend on top department priorities.

The donation comes just two months after the Hawkeyes agreed to pay $6.5 million to settle discrimination lawsuits filed by former athletic administrator Jane Meyer and her partner, former women’s field hockey coach Tracey Griesbaum.

Iowa offensive line expects improvement

Sports

July 20th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

A more experienced Iowa offensive line hopes to eliminate negative plays this season. Iowa’s run game was solid in 2016, averaging nearly 172 yards per game but the pass game struggled during an 8-5 season and quarterback CJ Beathard was sacked 30 times. Junior center James Daniels enters his second year as the starter and feels that experience will help him do a better job of recognizing pressure and making the proper call.

Daniels is trying to take the leadership role for center Austin Blythe used to help him. He asked to room with redshirt freshman Spencer Williams. Daniels says he wants to groom his eventual successor. Daniels is one of two members of the offensive line to be on the watch list for the Outland Trophy. The other is senior guard Sean Welsh.
