Race car at Iowa Speedway to feature pic of Newton teen, organ donor, on hood

Sports

July 28th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The picture of a Newton teenager, who died four years ago when he was hit by a vehicle, will be featured on the hood a race car in tomorrow’s (Saturday) XFinity Series race at the Iowa Speedway. The car’s driver, Joey Gase, and the Iowa Donor Network are behind the effort. Iowa Donor Network spokesperson Tony Hakes says 14-year-old Brendan O’Brien’s organs were donated after his life was cut short.

Race car driver Joey Gase

“It’s a complete honor for us to be featuring Brendan O’Brien on Joey’s car,” Hakes said. “Brendan was a donor in 2013 and we’ve been working with Bob O’Brien and his family for the last few years. They’ve done a lot of great things to promote donation.”

The race car was on display Thursday outside the Newton Fire Department, where Gase encouraged supporters of organ donation to put their handprints – in paint – on the hood of the car. “It gets a lot of people involved and it turns a lot of heads at the racetrack,” Gase said. “On Saturday, when you see this car on TV, it’ll be pretty cool to say ‘hey, that’s my handprint on there.'”

In addition to O’Brien’s picture, a picture of Gase’s mother is featured on the hood of the car. Mary Gase died suddenly of a brain aneurysm in 2011 and her organs were donated. Joey Gase, a Cedar Rapids native, has since been a leading advocate for organ donation. Tomorrow’s (Saturday) XFinity Series Race will be televised nationally on NBC.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — J.D. Martinez hit a grand slam and Zack Godley pitched seven innings as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 Thursday night. The Diamondbacks won their third game out of four, improved to 59-43 and snapped the Cardinals’ three-game winning streak.

CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber homered twice and drove in four runs, and the rolling Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 on Thursday night for their third consecutive victory. Anthony Rizzo also connected and Jon Lester pitched seven effective innings as the Cubs improved to 11-2 since the All-Star break. The NL Central leaders also increased their advantage over the second-place Brewers to 1 1/2 games ahead of their big series this weekend in Milwaukee.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The timing could hardly have been better for Kansas coach Bill Self. Every four years, the NCAA allows schools to embark on a foreign exhibition tour, and along with the games comes an opportunity to practice 10 times in preparation for it. Those additional practices usually give schools a jump on preparing for the regular season a couple of months later. The extra practice could help team chemistry, as the Jayhawks will look a whole lot different from their Big 12 championship team when they depart for Italy on Monday.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Former Nebraska quarterback Zac Taylor and defensive end Chad Kelsay are among the new members of the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame. The 2017 class, announced Thursday, will be recognized before the Cornhuskers’ game against Northern Illinois on September 16th. Taylor set school passing records and was 2006 Big 12 offensive player of the year. Kelsay helped the Huskers to conference and national titles in 1995 and ’97.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Tom Osborne is giving up his large skybox at Memorial Stadium, saying the Nebraska athletic department should sell it to someone else rather than have him continue to use it for free. Osborne coached the Cornhuskers for 25 years, retiring after the 1997 season with 255 wins and all or part of three national championships three of his last four years. He said the decision doesn’t mean there’s friction between him and the school.

UNDATED (AP) — The traditional two-a-day football practices of yesteryear are a thing of the past. The NCAA approved a plan this year that prevents teams from holding multiple practices with contact in a single day. Officials are hoping the rule change reduces the risk of head injuries to athletes.

IDPH Promotes New Concussion Management Guidelines

News, Sports

July 27th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), in partnership with the Iowa Department of Education, is rolling out Concussion Management Guidelines for Iowa Schools. The guidelines expand recommendations currently available through a community-based model for concussion management called REAP. REAP stands for Remove/Reduce, Educate, Adjust/Accommodate and Pace.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates as many as 3.8 million sports and recreation-related concussions occur in the U.S. each year; however, when concussions are properly recognized and managed within the first few weeks after injury, most individuals recover without lingering symptoms.

The guidelines bring health care providers, school nurses, coaches, teachers and parents together to work as a team to manage a concussion. In the past, concussion was often viewed only through the lens of participation in school sports. The guidelines recognize that concussion can affect a student in the classroom and at home and all parts of a student’s life should be taken into consideration and addressed by the student’s concussion management team.

Governor Reynolds will sign a proclamation regarding concussion awareness Thursday, August 3. To learn more about Iowa’s concussion management guidelines, REAP and brain injuries, including concussions, visit https://www.idph.iowa.gov/brain-injuries.

Iowa’s passing game has new look

Sports

July 27th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Iowa receiver Matt VandeBerg says the biggest changes under new Hawkeye offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz have been in the passing game. The son of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz took over the offense following the retirement of Greg Davis and the Hawkeyes released a two-deep this week that includes two tight ends in the starting lineup.

And that new passing game will be directed by a brand new starter at quarterback. Sophomore Nathan Stanley and Junior Tyler Wiegers will continue their competition in fall camp.

A healthy VandeBerg is crucial for an Iowa receiving corps short on numbers and experience. The native of South Dakota suffered a broken bone in his foot following the Big Ten opener and missed the remainder of the season. He suffered the same injury in spring practice.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Paul DeJong homered and Randal Grichuk had a career-high four hits as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Colorado Rockies 10-5 on Wednesday night to complete a three-game sweep. St. Louis has won four of five while Colorado has lost four of six.

DETROIT (AP) — Eric Hosmer matched his career high with five hits, including his first major league grand slam, and the Kansas City Royals extended their winning streak to a season-high eight games with a 16-2 rout of the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday night. Hosmer entered with 117 homers but had not hit one with the bases loaded until he connected off Warwick Saupold in a nine-run seventh inning.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jake Arrieta pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Chicago White Sox 8-3 on Wednesday night to move into first in the NL Central. After a disappointing start to the season, the Cubs are roaring again.

CANTON, Ohio (AP) — The Mid-American Conference wants shorter football games. The average game in the conference is 3 hours and 25 minutes, a minute longer than the national NCAA average. MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said Wednesday the aim this season is for games to come in at an average of 3:20.
