Elliott, Cowboys top improbable Hill TD to beat Chiefs 28-17

Sports

November 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ezekiel Elliott ran for the go-ahead touchdown after another reprieve from his six-game suspension and the Dallas Cowboys overcame Tyreek Hill’s improbable last-play touchdown in the first half, beating the Kansas City Chiefs 28-17 on Sunday.

Elliott’s 2-yard plunge in the third quarter came after the Chiefs turned a 14-3 deficit into a 17-14 advantage, sparked by Hill’s weaving 56-yard catch with the first-half clock expired and seven Dallas defenders inside their 25 trying to prevent the score.

Last year’s NFL rushing champion as a rookie, Elliott had 93 yards, ending a streak of three straight 100-yard games but outgaining Kareem Hunt, this year’s rushing leader in his first season entering the game.

Chiefs: Bye next week, at New York Giants on Nov. 19.

UNDATED (AP) — Notre Dame and Clemson climbed while Ohio State and Penn State tumbled out of the top 10, leaving the latest Associated Press college football poll looking a lot like the College Football Playoff rankings — with one big difference.

Alabama remained No. 1 in the AP Top 25 on Sunday, as it has been since the preseason. No. 2 Georgia picked up three more first-place votes for a total of five. In the playoff rankings, Georgia is No. 1 and Alabama is No. 2.

Notre Dame moved up two spots in to No. 3 and Clemson did the same to No. 4. Oklahoma jumped three spots to No. 5, leaving those three in the same order as the selection committee had them on Tuesday.

Unbeaten Wisconsin slipped two spots to No. 6 but is now the highest ranked team in the Big Ten. Ohio State fell eight spots to No. 11 after getting blown out at Iowa and Penn State dropped nine to No. 16 after spending all season in the top 10.

Iowa State dropped from 14th place to 24th, followed by previously unranked Iowa, which comes in 25th place.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Anthony Lawrence threw for 326 yards and four touchdowns and San Diego clinched at least a tie for the Pioneer League title with its 19th consecutive league win, 45-15 over Drake on Saturday. Lawrence was 27-of-36 passing with touchdowns of 7 yards to Ross Dwelley, 11 to Michael Bandy, 3 to Zach Holland and 1 to Justin Priest.

The Toreros (7-2, 6-0) went 72 yards in nine plays after the opening kickoff for Dwelley’s touchdown. The Bulldogs (5-4, 4-2) answered with an 11-play, 68-yard drive capped by Grant Kraemer’s 5-yard TD pass to Tyler Updegraff.

Bandy’s score came late in the second quarter and started a string 24 straight points and scores on six straight drives. The last two touchdowns were a 1-yard run from Joseph Binda and a 13-yarder by Emilio Martinez, who finished with 99 yards on 16 carries.

Kraemer finished 15 of 28 for 224 yards and two touchdowns, including an 18-yarder to Steven Doran early in the fourth quarter. Doran had seven receptions for 141 yards.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 226 yards and five touchdowns, and Iowa throttled third-ranked Ohio State 55-24, dealing what’s likely to be a fatal blow to the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes. Josh Jackson added three interceptions for the Hawkeyes, who beat their fourth top-5 opponent in their last five tries at home. Iowa raced out to a 31-17 halftime lead on a pair of Stanley touchdown passes to Noah Fant and cruised from there.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Will Grier threw two touchdown passes, Justin Crawford broke out of a three-game slump with 102 rushing yards and West Virginia held on for a 20-16 victory over No. 14 Iowa State on Saturday. West Virginia (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) became bowl eligible and knocked the Cyclones (6-3, 4-2, No. 15 CFP) out of a four-way tie for first place. Iowa State trailed 20-0 and never recovered in losing on the road for the first time.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Clayton Thorson sneaked into the end zone on fourth-and-1, and Northwestern’s defense came up with a big sack and pass breakup in overtime for a 31-24 win over Nebraska. The Wildcats are the first Football Bowl Subdivision program to win three consecutive overtime games. Justin Jackson ran 31 times for 154 yards and a touchdown, and Thorson threw for 243 yards for the Wildcats

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have activated linebacker Tamba Hali from the physically unable to perform list, though it’s uncertain whether the five-time Pro Bowl selection will play Sunday in Dallas. Hali missed the entire offseason program and training camp to rest and rehabilitate his ailing knees. He practiced for the first time Thursday and was taken off the PUP list Saturday. Cornerback D.J. White was waived to create roster space for him.

West Virginia beats No. 14 Iowa State 20-16

Sports

November 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Will Grier threw two touchdown passes, Justin Crawford broke out of a three-game slump with 102 yards rushing and West Virginia held on for a 20-16 victory over No. 14 Iowa State on Saturday. West Virginia (6-3, 4-2 Big 12) became bowl eligible and knocked the Cyclones (6-3, 4-2, No. 15 CFP) out of a four-way tie for first place.

Iowa State trailed 20-0 late in the second quarter and never recovered in losing on the road for the first time. The Cyclones allowed 524 yards of offense, couldn’t come back from its biggest deficit of the season and now has some work to do if it’s going to reach the Big 12 championship game.

UP NEXT: Iowa State: The Cyclones play No. 11 Oklahoma State at home next Saturday.

Stanley, Hawkeyes throttle No. 3 Ohio State 55-24

Sports

November 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Nate Stanley threw for 226 yards and five touchdowns, and Iowa throttled third-ranked Ohio State 55-24 on Saturday, dealing what’s likely to be a fatal blow to the Buckeyes’ playoff hopes. Josh Jackson added three interceptions for the Hawkeyes (6-3, 3-3), who beat their fourth top-5 opponent in their last five tries at home.

Iowa raced out to a 31-17 halftime lead on a pair of Stanley TD passes to Noah Fant. Stanley, following a successful and highly unusual fake field goal, later fired a 2-yard TD pass with a defender hanging onto his foot that put the Hawkeyes ahead 38-17 late in the third quarter.

J.T. Barrett threw a career-high four interceptions for Ohio State (7-2, 5-1, No. 6 CFP), which allowed its most points in a game under coach Urban Meyer. The Buckeyes committed nine penalties and gained just 371 yards in their most lopsided defeat since last year’s 31-0 loss to eventual national champion Clemson in the playoff.

Ohio State is sure to plummet in the polls because of the loss, although with so many Top 25 teams facing each other that fall might not be as drastic this week. Iowa got 1 point last week. The Hawkeyes will get a lot more of those on Sunday.

Up next: Iowa travels to face Wisconsin next week. The Badgers are now the Big Ten’s best hope — by far — for the playoff.
