Midwest Sports Update – 12/4/17

Sports

December 4th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs seemed like they would cruise to an AFC West title, but now they’re tied at 6-6 with the Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders. The ride could get even bumpier, too, and it’s unlikely that more than the division winner will make it to January.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs were once an undefeated powerhouse and a solid squad that many thought would challenge for supremacy in the AFC. Andy Reid’s squad is 6-6 now after losing a tough one to the New York Jets 38-31. It was the Chiefs’ sixth loss in seven games and did little to calm the nerves of fans who think their team is in the middle of an ugly collapse.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Lack of discipline doomed the Kansas City Chiefs in their 38-31 loss to the New York Jets. Four penalties were called against them in the Jets’ winning drive. Marcus Peters couldn’t take it anymore and the Chiefs cornerback picked up a flag and angrily tossed it into the stands. He then walked straight across the field at MetLife Stadium and into the locker room. It was that kind of day for the Chiefs.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — New Nebraska coach Scott Frost was given a rousing welcome home at his introductory news conference from boosters, current players and his old teammates. He promised to make them proud with the product he’ll put on the field. Frost takes over a program that has lost its stature among college football’s elite in the 20 years since he quarterbacked the Cornhuskers to a share of the 1997 national championship.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Nick Ward matched his season high with 22 points as part of a balanced offense that helped No. 3 Michigan State beat Nebraska 86-57. The Spartans have won six straight since losing to top-ranked Duke, beating each team by at least 18 points. Jaren Jackson had 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks, Cassius Winston scored 16 points and had seven assists, and Miles Bridges added 12 points. James Palmer led Nebraska with 15 points.

UNDATED (AP) — Iowa State’s brutal loss to Kansas State to end the regular season dimmed the program’s bowl prospects. But after five years of staying home in December, the Cyclones are thrilled to go anywhere _ including Memphis. That’s where Iowa State will be on Dec. 30 when it faces the hometown Memphis Tigers in the Liberty Bowl.

McCown, Chiefs’ poor discipline lead Jets to wild 38-31 win

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Josh McCown scored on a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 2:15 left, and the New York Jets bounced back from a brutal start to hold on for a wild and wacky 38-31 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

Chandler Catanzaro kicked a 21-yard field goal to put the Jets (5-7) ahead with 3:55 left. But Kansas City’s Bennie Logan was called for a personal foul for hitting long snapper Thomas Hennessy on the play. That gave the Jets the ball at the 1 with a new set of downs.

After two running plays, McCown threw incomplete — but Steven Nelson was penalized for defensive holding, making it first-and-goal from the 2. Three plays later, McCown kept the ball and shoved his way into the end zone.

McCown’s pass on the 2-point conversion was incomplete, but Nelson was called for holding. An enraged Marcus Peters picked up the penalty flag and tossed it away, drawing an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. Elijah McGuire ran it in moments later to convert the 2-point play and make it 38-31.

McCown finished with 331 yards passing and a touchdown to Matt Forte, and ran for two scores — including the winner. Jermaine Kearse had nine catches for 157 yards and Robby Anderson caught eight passes for 107 yards as the Jets dominated in time of possession, but still had to hold their breath in the end.

After Tyreek Hill’s 40-yard catch put the ball at the Jets 23, Smith completed a 4-yard pass to Travis Kelce, who had two early touchdowns. But Smith was then incomplete on three straight passes.

The loss by the Chiefs (6-6) ruined the return of cornerback Darrelle Revis, who made his debut with Kansas City after signing a two-year deal last week. Revis, who played eight years over two stints with the Jets, started for the Chiefs, but spent the second half on the sideline.

Kansas City has dropped six of its last seven after opening the season 5-0. Meanwhile, New York kept its faint playoff hopes alive by snapping a two-game skid and holding on to a fourth-quarter lead. The Jets had blown leads in the fourth quarter of three of their last four losses.

Iowa State earns Liberty Bowl bid, Iowa to Pinstripe

Iowa State’s brutal loss to Kansas State to end the regular season dimmed the program’s bowl prospects. But after five years of staying home in December, the Cyclones are thrilled to go anywhere — including Memphis. That’s where Iowa State (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) will be on Dec. 30 when it faces the hometown Memphis Tigers (10-2, 7-1 AAC) in the Liberty Bowl.

The appearance will snap a string of five seasons without a postseason appearance and give the Cyclones a shot at just the fourth bowl win in school history. The rival Hawkeyes (7-5), who beat Iowa State in a 44-41 overtime thriller in September, will face Boston College (7-5) in the Pinstripe Bowl on Dec. 27.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (AP) — Taryn Christion threw for three touchdowns and ran for another score to lead South Dakota State in a 37-22 victory over Northern Iowa on Saturday in the FCS playoffs. Fifth-seeded South Dakota State (10-2) avenged a 38-18 loss to Northern Iowa (8-5) on Oct. 14. The Jackrabbits have won six straight since then and will play in the quarterfinals against New Hampshire, who upset fourth-seeded Central Arkansas.

PSU beats Hawkeyes 77-73 for 1st win at Iowa since ’01

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Lamar Stevens scored 22 points, Mike Watkins added 19 and Penn State held off Iowa 77-73 on Saturday, snapping a 12-game road losing streak against the Hawkeyes. Tony Carr scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half for the Nittany Lions (7-2, 1-0 Big Ten), who picked up their first win in Iowa City since 2001.

As strange as it sounds, the Hawkeyes — who outrebounded Penn State 39-30 — actually made strides after getting their doors blown off in the second half of a 79-55 loss at Virginia Tech on Tuesday. But Iowa also turned it over 18 times and hit just four 3s. It could be a long season for the Hawkeyes.

State to continue testing for CWD

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 2nd, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The deer season in Iowa includes some continued testing of the animals taken to see if Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has spread in the herd. D-N-R spokesman, Tyler Harms says they are ramping up the sampling efforts in different parts of the state. The positive tests for C-W-D in wild deer have all come in counties along the border in eastern Iowa.  “We collect samples in every county and the number of samples varies depending on where you are in the state,” Harms says. “Those samples are collected by our wildlife field management staff. We are certainly encouraging hunters to help us with collecting those samples if you are contacted by some of our staff.”

Another disease the keep an eye for in the deer herd is Epizootic hemorrhagic disease. Commonly known as E-H-D, and surprisingly we did not receive many reports of that disease this year despite the dry conditions we experienced in late summer. So, Typically we see spikes of E-H-D after drought years or in drought conditions,” Harms says.

Harms expects hunters to take around 100-thosuand deer when all the seasons are complete.
