Red Oak wins sloppy game over Atlantic girls Tuesday

Sports

December 5th, 2017 by admin

The Red Oak girls basketball team won a sloppy game over the Atlantic Trojans on Tuesday night in Red Oak 68-38. Turnovers were the name of the game early as each team struggled taking care of the basketball. The Trojans had 19 turnovers in the first half and finished with 29 giveaways on the night. Red Oak finished with 24 turnovers on the night. Sierra Athen was one of the few bright spots in the first half as she dropped in 22 points to lead Red Oak to a 35-14 halftime lead.

The Tigers would push their lead out to 33 by the end of the third quarter. Athen finished with 28 points to lead all scorers on the night. Red Oak improved to 1-1 on the season.

Atlantic was led by 11 points from Baylee Newell. The Trojans fall to 1-3 and will return home to host Creston on Friday night. That game will be part of a varsity doubleheader and we’ll have it on KJAN. Pregame before the girls game will begin at 5:50pm with tip-off at 6:00pm.

Mikolas returns from Japan, agrees to $15.5M deal with Cards

Sports

December 5th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Right-hander Mike Mikolas is returning from Japan, agreeing to a $15.5 million, two-year contract with the St. Louis Cardinals. The 29-year-old’s agreement was announced Tuesday. He bolsters a Cardinals’ rotation that could lose Lance Lynn, who became a free agent.

Mikolas spent the last three seasons with the Central League’s Yomiuri Giants, going 31-13 with a 2.18 ERA in 62 starts. He was 14-8 this year, setting career highs for innings (188) and strikeouts (187) while walking 23. Selected on the seventh round of the 2009 amateur draft by San Diego, he was 4-6 with a 5.32 ERA in 37 games for the Padres and Texas from 2012-14. He was 2-5 with a 6.44 ERA for the Rangers in 2014, making 10 starts.

Gun maker’s exploding rifle leaves trail of injured hunters

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — One of the nation’s largest rifle makers is accused of marketing a muzzleloader that occasionally explodes and can severely injure hunters. Savage Arms has faced several lawsuits over its 10ML-II stainless steel rifle, which was once favored by thousands of big game hunters in the U.S. and Canada.

The Westfield, Massachusetts company has received dozens of complaints from customers dating to 2004 reporting that the gun’s barrel exploded, burst, split or cracked after firing. Hunters say they have suffered serious hand, face and ear injuries. Savage Arms has argued that the gun is safe and any explosions must have been caused by errors such as loading two bullets or the wrong gunpowder. But it’s also paid confidential settlements to resolve at least three recent lawsuits in Canada, Michigan and Indiana.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Juwan Morgan scored 15 points and De’Ron Davis added 13, spurring a decisive 18-0 second-half run to give Indiana a 77-64 victory over Iowa. The Hoosiers ended a two-game losing streak and gave new coach Archie Miller his first conference win.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Lindell Wigginton poured in a season-high 28 points and Iowa State rallied to beat Northern Illinois 94-80 for its fifth straight win. Senior Donovan Jackson added 24 points with six 3-pointers and Nick Weiler-Babb had 12 points and 11 assists for the Cyclones (5-2), who overcame depth issues to outscore the Huskies 58-42 in the second half.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have lost six of their past seven games, and how they’ve gone from a 5-0 start to tied atop the AFC West has been only part of the embarrassment. They are also one of the NFL’s most penalized teams, and cornerback Marcus Peters’ latest unsportsmanlike conduct penalty only underscored their discipline problems.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost will bring seven assistant coaches from Central Florida with him. Frost will have a salary pool of up to $5 million a year for assistants. Frost himself agreed to a seven-year deal totaling $35 million. He can earn bonuses totaling almost $1 million if he’s able to win conference and national championships in the same year. That’s according a memorandum of understanding with Nebraska that he signed on Nov. 27, six days before he was announced as the new coach.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Frustration got the best of Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski in the Patriots’ victory over the Buffalo Bills. And Kansas City cornerback Marcus Peters finally had enough of all the yellow flags. So he picked up one and tossed it into the stands and mistakenly figured he’d been ejected. Frustration also is rampant in Denver. The Broncos are playing worse than anyone in the league and are committing so many blunders that their coach is losing track.

Atlantic boys hoops gets first win of the season against Red Oak

Sports

December 4th, 2017 by admin

The Atlantic boys basketball team picked up their first win of the season with a 81-43 victory over the Red Oak Tigers on Monday night at Atlantic High School. Atlantic started a bit slow but improved their ball movement and defense in the second quarter to build a 49-27 lead by halftime.  The Trojans pushed the lead to 35 by the end of the third quarter 69-34.

Austin Alexander had a big night from the outside hitting 7 threes on his way to 27 total points to lead all scorers. Scott Leonard was a big offensive factor as well down low, finishing with 20 points for the game. Chase Mullenix also finished in double figures with 11. The Trojans were finally able to build some shooting confidence and buried 11 threes as a team.

Atlantic installed a full-court press in the second quarter on made baskets and that really rattled the Tigers. The Trojans turned the Tigers over a lot in that quarter, which led to some easy baskets.

Coach Alan Jenkins said the game was more important than the win, it was how the Trojans played that was important and what they did throughout the game to improve themselves.

The Trojans improve to 1-2 and will have a Friday night home game as part of a girl-boy doubleheader with Creston. We’ll have coverage of that doubleheader on KJAN Friday night starting at 5:50pm.
