Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Freshman Lindell Wigginton scored 24 points and Iowa State held off rival Iowa 84-78, its eighth straight home win over the Hawkeyes. Nick Weiler-Babb had 15 points and 10 assists for the Cyclones (6-2), who’ve won six in a row after a 0-2 start.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Klint Carlson scored 24 points, Spencer Haldeman added 10, including a key 3-pointer with 25 seconds left, to help Northern Iowa beat UT Arlington 62-58. Northern Iowa (7-2) led 59-52 with three minutes remaining before Kaelon Wilson and Kevin Hervey each made a 3-pointer to pull the Mavericks to 59-58 with 50 seconds left.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs and Raiders are both 6-6 and tied atop the AFC West with four games left in their season. So to say that their meeting Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium is important would be an understatement. Kansas City is trying to turn things around after losing four in a row, while Oakland has won two straight and three of four to get into contention.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs coach Andy Reid turned over some of the play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy last week, and the immediate returns were good. But that wasn’t enough for Reid to guarantee Nagy another shot this weekend.

Pass offers free or discounted golf at 250+ Iowa courses

Sports

December 7th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

It’s not golf weather in Iowa and most courses are closed for the season, but many lovers of the sport may already be thinking ahead to next spring and the Iowa P-G-A Golf Pass which went on sale this week. Thomas Hutton, executive director of the Iowa P-G-A, says the pass — which benefits the American Cancer Society — offers free or big discounts at many dozens of golf courses across Iowa and western Illinois during 2018.  “It’s a great way for people that want to find a great deal and play a lot of different golf courses throughout the golf season,” Hutton says. “With over 250 facilities in it, we have golf courses in all parts of Iowa, so no matter where you live, you can definitely find a nice opportunity to play.”

By purchasing the golf pass, Hutton says Iowa golfers can potentially save thousands of dollars on green fees, cart rentals, range balls, merchandise, and golf lessons. “If you buy the book and use it one or two times, you get your money back,” Hutton says. “It’s a great value for the customer and it’s a great opportunity to play lots of golf.” Two versions of the pass are available, one that’s printed and another that you can access from your smartphone. “The hardcopy book is $45 and the electronic version is $40 but we are constantly running promotions for $10 off,” Hutton says. “Simply enter the code when you’re purchasing the book and you’ll get $10 off. The hardcopy’s $35 and the electronic copy goes down to $30.”

Fifteen-percent of every purchase goes to the American Cancer Society to help support the programs and services offered across Iowa, including rides to treatment, lodging when traveling for treatment and ongoing research. In the past five years, Hutton says Golf Pass sales have generated more than 85-thousand dollars for the charity.

IA DNR continues to collect deer tissue samples for CWD testing

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

December 6th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is continueing to collect deer tissue samples from willing hunters as part of its effort to monitor for and track the presence of chronic wasting disease. The agency reports their wildlife staff has a goal of collecting 5,465 samples. The bulk of Iowa’s deer harvest occurs during the two shotgun seasons which provide an opportunity to collect a significant number of tissue samples. Most samples are obtained by wildlife staff, checking with hunters in the field or at home processing points. Terry Haindfield, wildlife biologist with the Iowa DNR leading the CWD collection effort. says “We’ve had really good cooperation from our hunters so our focus now is collecting samples from some pretty specific areas within our target counties in order to reach our quotas.”

He said the DNR is looking for samples from deer harvested from each county along the Missouri River. “Hunters willing to provide a sample should call their local wildlife biologist to see if the county or area where the deer was taken has filled its quota or is still in need of a sample,” he said. The DNR lists the cell phone numbers for its wildlife biologists on p. 45 of the hunting regulations. Hunters from the targeted areas needing additional help making contact to provide a sample can call Haindfield at 563-380-3422.

Additional testing is been conducted in Pottawattamie County, following positive tests from captive facilities.  The disease has been found in every state around Iowa. Since testing began in 2002, more than 62,500 tissue samples have been collected and tested looking for the presence of CWD in Iowa’s wild deer herd.

CWD is a neurological disease belonging to the family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) or prion diseases.  It attacks the brain of infected deer and elk causing the animals to lose weight, display abnormal behavior, lose body functions and die. It is always fatal to the infected animal. The disease first appeared in Iowa’s wild deer herd in 2013 and each year since, the DNR has placed extra emphasis to find the extent to which disease is in the area, and to help slow the spread by removing additional adult deer from the local population.

The Iowa DNR has more information about CWD and other infectious disease online at www.iowadnr.gov/cwd.
