CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Megan Gustafson scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her nation-leading 11th double-double this season and No. 25 Iowa rolled past Northern Iowa 71-47. Gustafson was 11 of 15 from the field in posting the 38th double-double of her career.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — JT Gibson scored a career-high 21 points, Zach Jackson added 18 points to go with 14 rebounds and Omaha never trailed in a 99-58 win over Division III Cornell College. Omaha shot 62 percent from the field, including 10 of 20 from long range, got 20 assists on its 40 buckets, and had a 45-23 rebounding advantage to deliver coach Derrin Hansen his 200th career victory.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kareem Hunt thought he played the best game of his career Saturday night. He couldn’t have picked a better time. The rookie running back ran for 155 yards and accounted for two touchdowns in a performance that helped the Chiefs beat the Chargers 30-13 and put them in control of the AFC West with two games remaining.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Peters returned from a one-game disciplinary suspension to help force three turnovers in the Chiefs’ 30-13 victory over the Chargers. The win gave Kansas City a stranglehold on the AFC West race with two games remaining, and nearly dashed any hopes that Los Angeles had of qualifying for the postseason.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Megan Gustafson scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her nation-leading 11th double-double this season and No. 25 Iowa rolled past Northern Iowa 71-47 on Sunday.

Gustafson was 11 of 15 from the field in posting the 38th double-double of her career. Alexis Sevillian added 11 points for the Hawkeyes, who shot 52 percent to just 29 percent for the Panthers (3-7). Kennedy Kirkpatrick and Megan Maahs scored 12 points each for Northern Iowa.

Iowa led throughout but only 28-24 at halftime. Gustafson scored seven points in a 13-6 run for a 16-point lead with three minutes left in the third quarter. A 12-3 run in the fourth quarter resulted in the Hawkeyes’ largest lead of 26.

The Hawkeyes (11-1) have won four straight and are off to their best start since going 12-1 to open the 2010-11 season. Iowa has won 11 straight over Northern Iowa and leads the series 21-2.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Marcus Peters returned from a one-game disciplinary suspension to help force three turnovers in the Chiefs’ 30-13 victory over the Chargers. The win gave Kansas City a stranglehold on the AFC West race with two games remaining, and nearly dashed any hopes that Los Angeles had of qualifying for the postseason.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Philip Rivers tossed three interceptions and the Chargers turned it over four times in a 30-13 loss to the Chiefs. It was a dramatic turnaround from the past four games, when the Chargers’ quarterback had been nearly flawless. But it continued a trend of struggles that Rivers has had throughout his career against Kansas City.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Svi Mykhailiuk hit a 3-point shot with 23.2 seconds left and No. 13 Kansas held on to beat Nebraska 73-72 and break out of a mini slump. Anton Gill missed a jumper and James Palmer Jr. had a shot blocked by Udoka Azubuike on the Cornhuskers’ last possession. Kansas was able to come up with the loose rebound and run out the clock to beat its former rival from the Big 12.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Mikaela Foecke had 20 kills and hit .250, Kelly Hunter had 37 assists and No. 5 Nebraska defeated No. 2 Florida in four sets to capture the program’s fifth national championship. The Cornhuskers flipped the script on the defensive-minded Gators, as it was their suffocating defense that fueled them to victory. They allowed the Gators to hit just .141, their lowest hitting percentage of the season.

Cook, Hawkeyes cruise past Drake 90-64

Sports

December 16th, 2017 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Tyler Cook scored 23 points, Jordan Bohannon had 15 with seven assists and Iowa cruised past Drake 90-64 on Saturday, its sixth straight win over the rival Bulldogs. Nicholas Baer scored 11 points with 14 rebounds, five steals and five assists for the Hawkeyes (6-6), who climbed back to .500 despite a recent stretch of six losses in seven games.

Iowa used a 13-0 run late in the first half to jump ahead 40-33. The Hawkeyes then outscored Drake 19-9 to start the second half, a run capped by a Bohannon 3 that put them ahead 59-42. The Hawkeyes had perhaps their most dominant performance of the season, outscoring the smaller Bulldogs 52-26 in the paint and shooting 55 percent from the field.

Nick McGlynn scored 14 points to lead Drake (5-6), which has dropped five of its last six games. Star Reed Timmer was held to 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

This was Iowa’s best win of the season — although that’s more of an indictment of the Hawkeyes’ start than anything else. The Hawkeyes used their huge edge in size to their advantage and, for once, imposed their will on a decent opponent. The Iowa that showed up in its state capital could win some games in the Big Ten.

Drake, the team that nearly beat Minnesota in Minneapolis was nowhere to be found. The Bulldogs couldn’t find an answer to Iowa’s size, and they were outscored 50-31 in the second half. Drake will look to rebuild its momentum with Valley play starting in just under two weeks.

UP NEXT: Iowa: Hosts Southern Utah on Tuesday.
