Clark Breaks B1G Record, Earns 24th Conference Player of the Week Honor

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa National Player of the Year candidate, Caitlin Clark, earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors the conference office announced on Monday.
This marks Clark’s 24th weekly award from the conference, which is the most in Big Ten conference history surpassing former Hawkeye, Megan Gustafson.
She garnered weekly honors for the sixth time this season which ties her six Big Ten weekly awards from a year ago.
Clark led the Hawkeyes to a pair of conference wins against Michigan State and Rutgers over winter break. The West Des Moines, Iowa, native, racked up her fourth straight game with 35+ points against Michigan State finishing with 40 points and five assists. Clark was able to finish the game with buzzer-beater three from the logo to gives the Hawkeyes the win. On the road at Rutgers, the All-American recorded her third triple-double this season leading scoring with 29 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. It was her 14th career triple-double.

– It was Clarks 50th career double-double against Rutgers, she is No. 10 on the Big Ten’s all-time list. She leads all Big Ten active players in career double-doubles.

No. 5 Cyclones Dominate California Baptist, 39-3

WALNUT, Calif. – No. 5 Iowa State dispatched of California Baptist in its Big 12 opener, 39-3, Sunday afternoon at Mt. San Antonio College. The Cyclones took nine of 10 matches from the Lancers and won five bouts with bonus points.

David Carr and Will Feldkamp both recorded falls while Cody ChittumYonger Bastida and Anthony Echemendia all posted tech falls. MJ Gaitan and Ethan Perryman both returned to their home state of California and wrestled in front of a solid contingent of friends and family.

Iowa State (8-1, 1-0 Big 12) won the takedown battle against California Baptist (3-5, 0-2 Big 12), 30-5.

Chittum got to his offense often in a tech fall over Chaz Hallmark at 157 pounds. The Cyclone tallied six takedowns and two sets of four near fall points, including a cradle as time expired, in the victory.

Carr made quick work of Timothy Cowan in the 165-pound bout. He secured five takedowns in the first period before earning a fall in 2:01. Carr has won six consecutive matches and improved to 13-1 on the year with the victory.

At 174 pounds, MJ Gaitan needed a takedown with 12 seconds remaining in the match to defeat Justin Phillips, 11-9. Will Feldkamp picked up Iowa State’s second fall of the day, and his fourth of the season, with a pin in 1:03 against Nathan Haas at 184 pounds.

Julien Broderson, leading 4-2 late in the 197-pound match, iced his victory with a late takedown in the third period. The win sent Iowa State into the intermission with a 23-0 advantage.

Yonger Bastida put on a takedown clinic at heavyweight out of the break. He amassed seven first period takedowns to post a 21-6 tech fall in 2:24 against Max Acciardi. Bastida improved his season takedown ration to 60:1.

At 125 pounds, Kysen Terukina found himself in a battle with Elijah Griffin, tied 1-1 in the third period. Terukina was aggressive with his fakes and hand fighting, forcing the action to secure the winning takedown with a minute remaining.

Two California high school preps duked it out at 133 pounds in Iowa State’s Ethan Perryman and CBU’s Hunter Leake. Perryman trailed, 1-0, entering the final period and went underneath Leake to begin the final two minutes. The Lancer put on a tough ride and turned Perryman for two near fall points to win CBU’s first bout of the dual, 4-0.

Anthony Echemendia won his sixth consecutive match via bonus points with a 20-3 tech fall over Emilio Trujillo in 3:42.

Zach Redding closed the dual with a gritty 6-3 victory over Dayne Morton at 149 pounds. Redding grabbed a first period takedown and fended off Morton in the final two minutes for the win.

Up Next
Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum Friday at 7 p.m. for another Big 12 tilt against Utah Valley. The Cyclones also have a rematch against No. 13 Pittsburgh Sunday at 2 p.m.

Both duals will be streamed via Big 12 Now on ESPN+.

Northern Iowa falls at home to Indiana State

Indiana State raced out to a 17 point halftime advantage and beat UNI 77-66 in Cedar Falls. It snapped the Panthers four-game winning streak.

That’s Panther coach Ben Jacobson, who says the hill was too steep to climb against a team as good as Indiana State.

The Panthers shot 38 percent, including 1-of-15 from three point range in falling to 1-3 in the Valley and 7-8 overall.

Drake suffers first MVC loss at Belmont

Drake’s unbeaten start in Missouri Valley Conference play ended in lopsided fashion in Nashville. Belmont jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead and crushed the Bulldogs 87-65.

That’s Drake coach Darian DeVries. Belmont center Malik Dia had 32 points, including five-of-eight from three point range.

The Bruins connected on 57 percent for the game, including 12-of-22 from three point range.

Drake is now 3-1 in the Valley and hosts an Indiana State team on Wednesday night that is 4-0 in the Valley.

Fran McCaffery is Iowa’s all-time leader in B1G wins

Fran McCaffery became Iowa’s all-time leader in Big Ten wins after Saturday’s 86-77 win over Rutgers. It was McCaffery’s 127th conference victory.

McCaffery says the milestone does make him think the journey at Iowa that began in 2010.

The Hawkeyes are 1-3 in the Big Ten and return to action Friday at home against Nebraska.

Cyclones Fall to 11th-Ranked Sooners in Big 12 Opener

NORMAN, Okla. – Iowa State (11-3, 0-1 Big 12) dropped Saturday’s Big 12 opener at No. 11 Oklahoma (13-1, 1-0 Big 12), falling to the Sooners by a score of 71-63.

The Cyclones trailed for the majority of the contest, holding just a one point lead twice late in the second half for a total of 21 seconds of game time.

Three Cyclones finished in double figures on the evening, as Robert Jones, Milan Momcilovic and Hason Ward each had 12-point outings. Ward was 6-7 from the field and was tied for the team-lead in rebounds with seven in just 18 minutes of action as he continues to be integrated back into the lineup following his foot injury.

Oklahoma really worked to take away Iowa State’s dynamic backcourt – each of which has a triple-double on the season – holding both Tamin Lipsey and Keshon Gilbert under a combined 10 points and forcing both to foul out of the contest.

The Sooners had four score in double figures, led by Javian McCollum with 15. McCollum and the Sooners shot 40 percent from deep compared to Iowa State’s 18.8, making 10 3-balls on the day.

The Cyclones will return to the confines of Hilton Coliseum on Tuesday, Jan. 9, to welcome the top-5 Houston Cougars to Ames. Tuesday night’s contest will be broadcast on ESPN2 and is set to tip off at 6 p.m.

Drake Women Extend Winning Streak to Four Games with Defeat of Purple Aces

DES MOINES, Iowa – An early scoring burst propelled the Drake women’s basketball team to its fourth straight victory and best conference start in five years.

Katie Dinnebier’s 17-point, 11-assist double-double led five double-figure scorers as the Bulldogs beat Evansville 78-68 at the Knapp Center on Saturday afternoon – their 17th-straight victory over the Aces.

Drake improved to 10-4 overall and 3-0 in the Missouri Valley Conference, the team’s best start in conference play since winning its first seven MVC games in the 2018-19 season. The Bulldogs remain tied for first with Murray State, Belmont and Missouri State. All 10 victories this season have been by double-figure margins.

The Bulldogs shot better than 50 percent for most of the game before finishing at 48.4. Drake outrebounded the Aces 42-24 and finished with 11 steals and assists on 21 of 31 field goals.

Drake will hit the road next weekend, playing at Valparaiso on Friday night (6 p.m.) and UIC on Sunday (1 p.m.).

Hawkeyes Clinch The National Duals Title

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s wrestling team brought home the 2024 NWCA National Duals title over top-seeded North Central College (NCC) Saturday afternoon in the UNI-Dome.

In the championship dual, second-seeded Iowa battled NCC until the very end, ultimately winning 21-20. Sterling Dias started the dual off with a 11-0 technical fall over third-ranked Maddie Avila at 101. At 109, Ava Bayless defeated third-ranked Jaslynn Gallegos via 5-5 decision. Coming into the 155 bout, the Hawkeyes trailed the Cardinals, 12-16, after five losses in the middle weights. Top-ranked Marlynne Deede put the Hawkeyes back in fron, earning a pin over fourth-ranked London Houston in 1:38. Kylie Welker followed, racking up a 11-3 decision over Yelena Makoyed at 170. Jaycee Foeller secured a passivity point in her 6-1 decision loss against Traeh Haynes, giving the team a point to secure the win over NCC.

In the semifinals, the Hawkeyes defeated three-seeded King University, 31-8, notching six ranked wins. Dias started the morning at 101 with a pin over sixth-ranked Mia Zuniga in 4:04. Bayless followed at 109 with a hard fought 2-0 decision over third-ranked Danielle Garcia. At 116, Gonzalez broke through with a decision win over fifth-ranked Melanie Mendoza, 8-0. Taylor secured the team’s third decision over third-ranked Montana Delawder, 5-0, at 123. At 143, Larramendy battled for six minutes and came out on top against Yasmine Oliveira, via a 7-0 decision. Welker and Foeller finished the dual in style at 170 and 191. Welker notched a 10-0 tech. fall over second-ranked Tiffani Baublitz, and Foeller finished with a pin over sixth-ranked Alexa Garcia in 5:49.

Atlantic Wrestling sees Success at Rollin Dyer Wrestling Tournament

Two Atlantic Trojans Aiden Smith (126) and Evan Sorensen (285) won the individual titles at the Rollin Dyer Wrestling Tournament in Atlantic on Saturday. The Trojans finished sixth in the eighteen-team field with 126.5. Smith, state runner-up one year ago at (113), made his record to 32-1 and beat the 126-pound weight class. The junior pinned three of his four opponents., including a fall in 3:44 over Ethan Skoglund of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in the finals. Evan Sorensen (285) was fierce on his way to the top of the podium. Sorensen went 24-2, posted pins of 24: 49, 1:27, and a:17 fall over Noah Winger of Bondurant-Farrar in the finals.

Four other Atlantic Wrestlers medaled in the tournament. Taye Jordan (106) finished runner-up, Braxton Hass (113) finished third, Cohen Bruce, 5th at (190), Jayden Harter, 6th at (132), and Collin Harris, 8th at (106).
