January 25th, 2018 by admin

The AC/GC Chargers announced the hiring of Cody Matthewson as their new Head Football Coach on Tuesday night. Matthewson is a native of Madrid and after starring for the Tigers in high school went on to play Linebacker for Northwest Missouri State from 2009-2014.

Matthewson said he is very excited to get back to small town Iowa and get the area excited about the Chargers football program. He said he hopes he can carry his experience with success at Madrid and Northwest with him to the AC/GC program and get the kids to buy in to a family type mindset.

Matthewson started 14 of 15 games for Northwest Missouri State during their 2013 National Championship season, racking up 46 tackles with 4.5 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

His Madrid teams went 40-6 during his four seasons and he was an elite all-state first team selection leading the Tigers to an 11-2 record and state semifinal appearance his senior season in 2008. He rushed for 4,508 yards and 51 touchdowns at Madrid.

Matthewson is currently a strength and conditioning teacher at Pioneer Ridge school and a coach at Truman High School in the Kansas City metro. He will be finishing his duties as a baseball coach in the spring and heading back to Iowa to get settled in late spring.

Trojan Bowl expected to stay, Atlantic School Board to look at Bond Referendum

News, Sports

January 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic School Board spent more than an hour discussing the direction they would take with regard to the District’s Athletic Facilities. It included possibly buying land to relocate the baseball and softball fields, and, leaving things where they are, but making them ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant. They also talked about a possible bond referendum. There were a lot of stops and starts during the meeting, but the general consensus appeared to be, that the Trojan Bowl will remain where it is.

Board President Ali Bruckner said “As a Board, we feel very comfortable leaving the athletic facilities where they are currently, today, and working toward a plan to make them safe, playable and ADA compliant.” She said, however, “That will take time, and we will do our Due Diligence. And at our next Board meeting we will have a vote on if that’s the way we’re going to go, or not. And then after that, there’ll several steps.”

One of those steps includes meeting with bonding agent Travis Squires with Piper-Jaffray, because, according to Bruckner, “Our capital dollars will not stand for this type of improvement project. You have to keep capital dollars at hand for things that come up, [such as] roof leaking, or things that need to be fixed.”

Superintendent Steve Barber said “We are in the process of developing a timeline and doing it an expedient manner.” Board member Kristy Pellett, added the District currently has no debt service, which is a positive aspect when going after a bond. The high school was the last debt service, she said.

Sports

January 24th, 2018 by admin

The meet will remain a co-ed event and still be held on February 19-21. Iowa High School Football Playoffs to stay at 16 teams per class in 2018

Sports

January 24th, 2018 by admin

The Iowa High School Athletic Association Board of Control decided on Wednesday to keep the Iowa High School Football playoffs at 16 teams in each class in 2018. The announcement comes after it was previously announced that changes will be made to the size of each class. As previously noted the top 42 schools by BEDS numbers will be in Class 4A, the next 54 schools in 3A, the next 54 in 2A, the next 54 in 1A, and the remainder of 11-player schools in Class A.

The district format will also be changing to 9 six-team districts in classes 3A/2A/1A. That would provide for 5 district games and 4 non-district games each year. In Class A there will be 8 districts of 6 teams and 2 districts of 7 teams. 8-Player will have 7 districts of 8 teams and 1 district of 9 teams. Class 4A will have 7 districts of 6 teams. Districts are expected to be released by the state on Thursday.

Qualification for the playoffs will also change with the implementation of an RPI. District champions and those that tie for a district title will be automatic qualifiers for the playoffs. The RPI will then decide qualifiers, rankings, or both. The official statement on RPI use can be seen here: 1.24-RPI-Football-FAQs

The Board of Control also approved cross-state games for non-district games. So teams can now schedule opponents from Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Illinois if they would like.

We’ll have more on these changes as the district assignments are released.
