Audubon standout wide receiver Josh Lange announced on Thursday that he has committed to Buena Vista University to continue his academic and football career. Lange announced his decision on Twitter saying “Very excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and football career at Buena Vista University!!! #BuildTheDam #rollbeavs”

Lange has been a four year starter for the Wheelers racking up 122 catches for 1,940 yards and 27 touchdowns throughout his career. Lange also carried the ball on the ground 69 times for 528 yards and six more scores.  His Wheeler squads went 33-8 during his career and they made it to the quarterfinal round of the 8-man playoffs this year, falling to eventual runner-up Remsen St. Mary’s.

An overtime struggle between two struggling teams ended with a 71-68 road win for Iowa women’s basketball Thursday. According to HawkeyeSports.com, the Lady Hawks, who came into the game against Michigan State as the losers of four of their last five games, handed the Spartans their fourth loss in a row behind a monster night from junior Megan Gustafson (game-highs 36 points, 17 rebounds).

Kathleen Doyle, the only other Hawkeye with 10-plus points, was also impressive, notching an 11-point, 11-assist double-double. Chase Coley grabbed 10 rebounds and added five points, including two on a jumper with 6.4 seconds left in overtime that gave Iowa a lead it would not relinquish.

Michigan State (14-9, 4-6) was led in scoring and rebounding by Sidney Cooks, who had 16 points and eight boards. She was also the only Spartn starter to shoot better than 40 percent (7 of 13) as Michigan State struggled to a 37.5 percent success rate from the field. Iowa shot 44.8 percent from the floor.

Iowa next hosts Minnesota (17-5, 6-3) at 2 p.m. Sunday. The Gophers downed the Hawkeyes back on Jan. 21, 77-72, at Williams Arena.

The Iowa High School Athletic Association has released the postseason boys basketball playoff brackets and substate sites for Classes 1A and 2A on Thursday.

Class 1A first round pigtail games will be played on February 12th with tip times set for 7:00pm. Local teams playing in first round games include: Orient-Macksburg @ Essex in District 13 Substate 8. The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union released the Regional basketball pairing for Class 4A and Class 5A on Wednesday. All game times will be 7:00pm on their respective nights.

Locally in Class 4A Region 1 opening round games on Wednesday, February 14th will have Carroll at Storm Lake and Spencer at Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Winner of the first game will play at Denison-Schleswig on the 17th. Winner of the second game will play at LeMars.

Class 4A Region 8 first round games on the 14th will have ADM at Winterest and Glenwood at Harlan. Winner of the first game will play at Lewis Central and winner of the second game will play at Bishop Heelan on the 17th.

In Class 5A Thomas Jefferson will host Sioux City North in a pigtail game on the 14th in Region 4. The winner there will travel to Southeast Polk on the 17th. Abraham Lincoln is in Region 6 and will travel to Sioux City West for a pigtail game on the 14th. Winner there will play at Johnston on the 17th.

Two teams needing a victory collide in East Lansing as the Iowa Hawkeye women visit Michigan State, tonight (Thursday). Both teams are 4-5 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeyes are looking to bounce back from a lopsided loss at home against Nebraska. Iowa coach Lisa Bluder. (Click on the left side of the audio bar to listen)

Bluder says the Hawkeyes face a similar challenge against the Spartans.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Donovan Jackson scored 25 points, Lindell Wigginton added 22 and Iowa State upset 15th-ranked West Virginia 93-77 on Wednesday night, sending the short-handed Mountaineers to their fifth loss in six games. Cameron Lard scored 18 points with 13 rebounds for the Cyclones (12-9, 3-6 Big 12). They took advantage of the absence of West Virginia’s Daxter Miles Jr. (illness) by handing the Mountaineers (16-6, 5-4) their biggest defeat since a 23-point blowout at the hands of Texas A&M in the opener.

The Cyclones had West Virginia playing catch-up from the opening tip. The Mountaineers caught them just once — but were never able to overtake them. West Virginia fell behind 25-11 after allowing Iowa State to hit 10 of its first 13 shots. The Mountaineers rallied with an 18-4 run, but the Cyclones answered with a 24-11 spurt and went back ahead 53-40. Iowa State continued its torrid shooting in the second half. Jackson’s fifth 3 gave it a 74-60 lead, and Wigginton’s drive at the end of the shot clock made it 84-70 with 4:38 left. The Cyclones committed just eight turnovers against the league’s leader in turnover margin despite missing point guard Nick Weiler-Babb to knee tendinitis. Jevon Carter scored 18 points and Esa Ahmad and Sagaba Konate each had 17 for West Virginia.

Iowa State Coach Steve Prohm had to be encouraged by his team’s effort after a 68-45 home loss to Tennessee that left he and his players calling the Cyclones “soft” more than once. Iowa State showed resolve against a team that had won four of the previous five meetings in the series. Iowa State plays at Baylor on Saturday.
