Loyola Chicago tops Drake 72-57 for 20th win

Sports

February 8th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

CHICAGO (AP) — Cameron Krutwig scored 17 points, Clayton Custer added 14 and Loyola Chicago pulled away from Drake 72-57 on Wednesday night. The pair combined for 22 points in the second half when the Ramblers (20-5, 10-3 Missouri Valley Conference), who led 32-28 at the break, made 4 of 9 3-pointers, shot 57 percent (17 of 40) from the field and had 12 of their 21 assists with just one turnover.

The win gave Loyola its second 20-win season in four years but it is the first time the Ramblers hit 20 wins before a conference tournament since 2007, the last year they won 10 league games (in the Horizon League). Loyola reached double figures in conference wins for just the fifth time in school history.

Nick McGlynn and Reed Timmer both had 16 points for the Bulldogs (13-13, 7-6).

Lohaus leads Northern Iowa past Bradley 74-65

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Wyatt Lohaus scored a career-best 25 points and Northern Iowa snapped a three-game skid, beating Bradley 74-65 on Wednesday. Lohaus was 7 of 11 from the field including six 3-pointers for the Panthers (12-13, 4-9 Missouri Valley Conference). Klint Carlson added 12 points and led with nine rebounds. Bennett Koch had 11 points and seven rebounds.

Lohaus hit his first 3-pointer early in the half to put the Panthers up by two and they never trailed before intermission, holding on to lead 32-30 at the break.

Bradley surged 18-10 to open the second half and Dwayne Lautier-Ogunleye’s layup put the Braves (17-9, 7-6) on top 48-42 with 13:19 to play. Lohaus led a 17-4 run after that, draining three 3-pointers and a jumper, and the Panthers led 59-52 with 7:52 left and they cruised from there.

Lautier-Ogunleye finished with 19 points for the Braves who have lost the last two after winning four straight.

No. 7 Texas Tech wins 5th straight, 76-58 over Iowa State

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — Freshman guard Zhaire Smith scored a career-high 21 points, including a steal that led to his alley-oop slam, and No. 7 Texas Tech beat Iowa State 76-58 on Wednesday night for its fifth straight win.

After the Cyclones (12-11, 3-8 Big 12) scored seven straight points in a 77-second span to get within one after halftime, Smith made a steal. He passed the ball on the break to Jarrett Culver, who then lobbed an alley-oop pass that resulted in Smith’s two-handed slam.

Culver added 16 points for the Red Raiders (20-4, 8-3), whose last loss was 70-52 at Iowa State on Jan. 20. Keenan Evans scored 15. Texas Tech is the first Big 12 team to reach 20 wins overall and is tied with No. 10 Kansas (19-5, 8-3) atop the conference standings.

Cameron Lard had a career-high 22 points on 10-of-11 shooting for already short-handed Iowa State. He played only 20 minutes before fouling out. Lindell Wigginton scored 13.

The Cyclones have been to a school-record six NCAA Tournaments in a row, but that streak could be in serious jeopardy. They have lost four of their last five games, and are in a stretch of three straight against ranked opponents. They played their second game in a row without junior guard Nick Weiler-Babb, who has left knee tendinitis. He is the only player in the nation averaging at least 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists per game. Iowa State had only eight available players because senior forward Hans Brase was also out with a knee issue.

Iowa State also faces Top 25 opponents in its next two games, Saturday against No. 17 Oklahoma and next Tuesday night against No. 10 Kansas.

Sports

Athletic officials with Southwestern Community College in Creston have announced that the Spartans will not compete in the 2018 spring softball season. A release from the school stated that numbers have declined due to a variety of reasons and school officials decided the best option was to cancel the spring season.

The team plans to resume play in the next academic year and will continue to recruit for that scenario.

Nick Ward added 17 points and Joshua Langford had 15 for the Spartans (23-3, 11-2 Big Ten), who got a serious scare from the Hawkeyes in what was supposed to be a tune-up for Saturday’s huge home game against No. 3 Purdue.
