Treynor delivers last blow in heavyweight hoops battle with Atlantic

Sports

February 9th, 2018 by admin

The Treynor Cardinals and Atlantic Trojans went blow by blow in a great basketball game on Friday night and the Cardinals prevailed 66-62. The game featured 8 ties and 13 lead changes.

Both teams delivered some great offense throughout the game and a couple of individual performances for the Cardinals helped them get the win. Luke Clausen dropped in 7 threes on the night, including a huge one in the fourth quarter to give Treynor a four point lead they would hold on to. Atlantic clawed within 1 after a Chase Mullenix three at 61-60 but Clausen answered with the final of his downtown makes to make it 64-60. Atlantic got back within two and had possession but Scott Leonard lost the ball out of bounds trying to make a baseline spin on the block. Clausen then iced it with two free throws to provide the final points.

Clausen finished with 31 points to lead all scorers. Dillon Faubel also had a stellar game for Treynor with 24 points and he went over 1,000 career points in the process. The Cardinals stay undefeated at 21-0. They now prepare for the playoffs and a semifinal match-up in Subtate 8 District 16 against either Clarinda and Shenandoah. That game will be played on Thursday, February 15th at 8:00pm in Treynor as the second half of a doubleheader. We’ll have coverage of the Shenandoah vs Clarinda Game along with AHSTW vs Red Oak in Avoca on Monday night.

The Trojans got 20 points from Austin Alexander, 15 of those came in the first half. Three other Trojans finished in double figures; Chase Mullenix 15, Scott Leonard 11, and Grant Podhajsky 10. Podhajsky also had 10 rebounds and Leonard had 7 boards and 3 blocks. Atlantic falls to 11-8 on the season and will next travel to Creston on Monday.

Listen to Atlantic Head Coach Alan Jenkins’ thoughts after the game on our Saturday morning coaches show at 8:30am on KJAN.

ISU’s Kempt granted another year of eligibility by NCAA

Sports

AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State Athletics Department announced today that quarterback Kyle Kempt has been granted a sixth season of eligibility by the NCAA. Kempt will be a senior at Iowa State in 2018.

The NCAA granted Kempt an extension of eligibility on Jan. 30 after considering the totality of circumstances surrounding his transfer from Oregon State University and Hutchinson Community College (Kansas).

“We are excited that Kyle was given another year of eligibility by the NCAA,” Iowa State head football coach Matt Campbell said. “We alerted Kyle and our recruits when we received the clearance notification on Jan. 30. Since then all of our efforts had been focused on our 2018 football team and recruiting. Kyle has established himself as a leader on our team and we are thrilled by the NCAA’s decision to allow him to remain a Cyclone in 2018.”

“I’m relieved the decision has been made and extremely excited to be back with the team in 2018,” Kempt said. “We have a lot of work to do and it is a thrill for me to be able to represent this great university for another year. I am also thankful for the NCAA for looking at my situation so thoroughly and for all of the people involved in this process. They put in a lot of hard work and I really appreciate it.”

A native of Massillon, Ohio, Kempt played a huge part in Iowa State’s resurgence nationally in 2017, helping the Cyclones post an 8-5 record, appear in the AP top-25 for the first time since 2005 and claim their fourth bowl win in school history.

Kempt had attempted only two passes in his collegiate career prior to earning his first career start at No. 3 Oklahoma on Oct. 7. He proceeded to lead Iowa State to one of its greatest victories in school history, throwing for 343 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-24 passing.

Kempt’s fourth-quarter toss to Allen Lazard with 2:19 left in the game was the game-winner in the Cyclones’ 38-31 victory. Kempt was named Davey O’Brien National QB of the Week and Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week after his performance vs. the Sooners.

Kempt kept the Cyclones rolling through a perfect October (4-0), including another win over a top-5 opponent in a 14-7 victory vs. No. 4 TCU in Jack Trice Stadium.

The honorable mention All-Big 12 selection finished the season with a 5-3 record as a starter, including a 3-1 mark vs. ranked opponents. He broke ISU’s single-season completion percentage (66.3) mark, connecting on 161-of-243 passes for 1,787 yards and 15 touchdowns. His 15 touchdowns passes ties for fifth on Iowa State’s season record list in just nine games played.

He notched his second 300-yard passing game of the year (314 yards) in the 21-20 win over No. 19 Memphis in the Liberty Bowl.

Kempt began his career at Oregon State in 2013, redshirting his first season and directing the scout team in 2014. After a coaching change, Kempt transferred to Hutchinson Community College in 2015.

Kempt joined the Cyclones as a walk-on in 2016, seeing action in two games. He got his chance in 2017 where he remained a walk-on.

Campbell also announced that Kempt has received a scholarship for the remainder of his Cyclone career.

Chiefs cut cornerback Revis to save salary cap space

Sports

February 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have cut veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis, a move that was long expected with his pricey tag next season and the franchise’s tight salary cap situation this off-season. The team announced the move in a statement Thursday. Revis signed an incentive-laden, two-year contract in November, providing the Chiefs with some help down the stretch and in the playoffs. He started twice and made 10 tackles in five regular-season games.

The Chiefs needed to free up salary cap space, and the release of Revis combined with the pending trade of quarterback Alex Smith to Washington will free up about $21.5 million. The 32-year-old Revis spent the previous 10 seasons with the Jets, Patriots and Buccaneers.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs have cut veteran cornerback Darrelle Revis, a move that was long expected with his pricy tag next season and the franchise’s tight salary cap situation this offseason. The team announced the move in a statement Thursday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Mike Matheny is well aware that he has yet to earn a World Series championship ring during his six seasons as the manager of the St. Louis Cardinals. It’s not like St. Louis, an 11-time World Series champion, would let him forget.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — NASCAR says David Hyatt will replace Jimmy Small as the president of the Iowa Speedway. NASCAR, which owns the track in Newton, Iowa, says Small has accepted a new position as a senior director of international business development. Small will work out of the organization’s Los Angeles office. The Iowa track will host two NASCAR Xfinity races, a Camping World truck event and an IndyCar race this summer.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Zach Jackson scored 25 points, including the go-ahead bucket, and KJ Robinson added 18 points as Omaha came back to take down Western Illinois 71-68. Jackson’s floater gave the Mavericks (8-17, 3-6 Summit League) a 69-68 lead with 28.9 seconds left.
