Griswold Girls basketball showing “Hunger” in 2024 campaign

Sports

January 10th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The (4-8) Griswold Girls basketball team had a bumpy start to the season only winning 3 out of their first 9 games. When asked about the losses it seemed that a part of Griswold’s woes was the overthinking on the court and a lack of confidence. Now through the growing pains and losses, a new sort of identity is beginning to emerge for Tiger basketball and Head Coach Ryan Lockwood likes to use one word, “Hunger”.

That shift in mental gears represented itself last Friday when Griswold won a tightly contested battler against Essex 36-32. Part of that win in Coach Lockwood’s opinion is from the girl’s ability to play a full four quarters of locked in team basketball.

In that hard fought game against the Trojans, senior Karly Millikan stood out from her team almost having a double-double with 9 points and 14 rebounds. Millikan leads the team in rebounds and Coach Lockwood freely admits her success with grabbing boards is part of competitive nature and precise basketball mind.

Through Griswold’s 12 games, another player has stuck out on the stat sheet. Freshman Amanda Houser who currently leads the Tigers in scoring with 81 points, she has a few teammates close behind like Addison Adams with 80 and Abby Gohlinghorst with 79.

The next challenge for Coach Lockwood and his competitive Griswold squad is a road trip to Shenandoah on Thursday night. There they face a (6-6) Fillies team with a powerful scorer in junior Lynnae Green who is averaging over 18 points a game. The Tigers know they will have to bring their A-game in this contest.

Tipoff is set for 6:00pm Thursday night in Shenandoah.

West Virginia is 2-1 in the Big 12.

Freshman forward Owen Freeman has been a bright spot in what could be a down year for the Iowa basketball team. The six-10 native of Moline is averaging better than 10 points and nearly six rebounds and also leads the team with 30 blocked shots. He has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week five times this season.

That’s Iowa coach Fran McCaffery who says Freeman’s success begins with his work ethic.

The Hawkeyes are 9-6 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten. The host Nebraska Friday night.

Final deer hunting season opens tomorrow (Thursday)

January 10th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The last opportunity for hunters to take a deer this season will focus on unclaimed deer tags in individual counties. Iowa D-N-R state deer biologist Jace Elliott says this final season helps with population control. “Starting January 11th through January 21st, we have January antlerless seasons being held in select counties based on the availability of those county antlerless tags on the 11th,” he says. The D-N-R held its first excess tag season last year. “Those tags can be purchased for use during that January anterless season. It has to be purchased in person at a vendor just because if you purchased it online, the tag may not come to you in time to utilize for the season,” Elliot says. “They must be purchased in person at a vendor, a list of which can be found on our D-N-R website.”

Elliott says the rules change a little bit on the type of gun you can use to encourage hunters to participate. “The Excess Tag January Season allows the use of centerfire rifles between 22 and 50 caliber, that can be used to harvest deer that normally many of those calibers couldn’t normally be used during our firearm season,” he says. “So there’s a little bit of incentive there for hunters to go out and take advantage of these extra seasons.” Elliott says hunters have had success in recent weeks.

“In terms of our overall harvest this season, we’re trending along pretty closely with our five year average. We’re within five percent of the harvest at this time last year, which was a very good year for our deer harvest in Iowa,” Elliott says. “I would expect finishing up at about the same spot, which is between 105 and 110-thousand deer.”

He says the anterless season is a little quieter and longer, and offers a great opportunity to get a deer for your freezer late into the winter.

Atlantic Trojan Baseball has a New Head Coach in Nathan Block

Sports

January 9th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

There is a new Head Coach in town for the Atlantic Trojans baseball team and his name is Nathan Block. When asked about what his initial feeling was with becoming the next Head Coach, Block explained how thrilled he was.

An Iowa native Coach Block is a graduate of Panorama High School. He attended Loras College and from there he learned he had a passion for teaching and coaching. Block served as an assistant baseball coach at Pocahontas Area and Nodaway Valley. Block’s time at Nodaway Valley made him familiar with the Atlantic program as the two programs competed last summer.

While discussing this new role of coaching for Atlantic, Coach Block discussed how being a successful coach is about connecting with the students and helping them learn about the importance of the communities they’re in.

On the topic of coaching, Coach Block was quick to remember a coach that impacted him in his high school days. That said coach is Head Baseball Coach at Panorama Brian Bahrenfuss.

Coach Block has simple and concise goals for his Trojan Squad. He wants to move a team that was 10-17 a year ago, to above .500 and he plans on his team competing for a Hawkeye Ten conference title.

Baseball season for Atlantic starts Monday May 20th.
