The win marks head coach Fran McCaffery’s 271st career win, tying Dr. Tom Davis for the most wins in school history. The Hawkeyes move to 10-6 on the season and 2-3 in Big Ten play.

Freshman Owen Freeman led the Hawkeyes in the scoring column for the third time this season. Freeman was nearly perfect from the field in the second half, knocking down 7-of-8 field goal attempts and scoring 14 points in the second 20 minutes of action. Senior Tony Perkins set a new career-high with 15 assists and just two turnovers. 15 assists is one shy of the Iowa single game assists record (Cal Wulfsberg, 16 assists vs Ohio State).  Perkins becomes the third Hawkeye in program history to have 15+ assists in a single game. Perkins added 11 points to secure his first double-double of the season. Junior Payton Sandfort shot 4-of-7 from beyond the arc to go along with 10 rebounds. CORALVILLE, Iowa – The 23rd-ranked University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team defeated No. 21 Washington, 196.400-196.250, in its season opener on Friday evening in Xtream Arena. 196.400 is the second-highest score in a season opener in program history (196.450 at No. 11 Minnesota in 2021).

The GymHawks had an event sweep over the Huskies with senior Adeline Kenlin winning on beam, floor and ultimately the all-around. Kenlin scored a career-best, 39.575, in the all-around. The Iowa City native finished in the top-two in every event in the meet. Sophomore Karina Muñoz was Iowa’s meet MVP after bringing home the event titles on vault and bars.

Freshmen Eva Volpe and Alyse Karenbauer made their collegiate debuts. Volpe competed in all four apparatuses for the GymHawks and finished with an all-around score of 39.100. Junior Ilka Juk made her Iowa debut competing on bars and beam.

HEAR FROM HEAD COACH LARISSA LIBBY

“This was one those moments when you would have been okay to lose. I say that because our teams were very comparable and both teams did everything they possibly could.  This is an excellent Washington team and we are excited that we will represent this conference together beginning next season.

Our team literally did everything right tonight.  I don’t mean from the gymnastics aspect but from all of the other things we ask them to do. From a team culture standpoint, they couldn’t have been better. The contributions came from every single member of this team. Everyone played a role tonight and owned those roles. Our upperclassmen did the most incredible job keeping our freshmen pumped and on the right track. Everything about this night was amazing and gives a very young team a fantastic start to the season.”

LINCOLN, Neb. – The third-ranked University of Iowa men’s wrestling team picked up their 15th-straight win over sixth-ranked Nebraska on Friday evening in the Devaney Center. The Hawkeyes defeated the Huskers, 22-10. Iowa finished with one bonus point win and six ranked victories.

“These guys are taking anything that’s thrown at them” said head coach Tom Brands. “They know it is an important time of the year, getting closer and closer to the postseason, and they keep getting better. They get tougher when it is a tough situation, that is what we love about them and that is what they love about the sport.”

No. 5 Drake Ayala opened the dual at 125 with a win over No. 7 Caleb Smith, via 7-3 decision. Ayala, who moved up nine spots in the latest rankings, recorded two takedowns in the first period and an escape in the third, while only allowing Smith three points via escape.

No.7 Brody Teske fell via decision, 10-4, to No. 30 Jacob Van Dee at 133 after a tough fight through the six minutes.

With the dual tied at 3-3 going into 141, No. 1 Real Woods put the team back in the lead with an 8-2 decision over No. 7 Brock Hardy. Woods secured two takedowns and an escape, as well as being awarded a point for riding time to cap off the match.

The dual score was tied at 6-6 entering the last match before intermission. With a takedown and two escapes, No. 2 Jared Franek downed No. 3 Peyton Robb at 157, via a close decision, 5-4.

Rolling into 174, Patrick Kennedy defeated No. 30 Bubba Wilson, despite Wilson taking the first points of the match. Kennedy recorded a 9-5 win via decision, after securing a late escape and takedown in the third period.

“Coming in we knew it was going to be a big match, for both me and the team, he’s a common opponent I’ve seen before, and getting a win like that in the middle of the year and starting the Big Ten duals feels good” said Patrick Kennedy. “There has been a lot of areas in my game that I feel I didn’t capitalize on out there, so a lot of improvements to make.”

Nebraska earned its third win of the night at 184, with Aiden Riggins falling to No. 3 Lenny Pinto due to an 18-5 major decision.

At 197, No. 16 Zach Glazier upset reigning Big Ten Champion No. 11 Sillas Allred. Glazier racked up 11 points via three takedowns, an escape, and the addition of riding time. Glazier’s victory gave Iowa the, 19-10, lead going into the final bout of the night.

“Going out there it’s just calm, cool, and collected” says Zach Glazier after being asked about his mentality going in to the deciding match. “Moving my hands, moving my feet, wrestle hard, and just being thankful to be out there lets me let it fly. The biggest thing I can do for myself is just relax and let it fly.”

“I give him full credit” says head coach Tom Brand when asked about Glazier. “He is undefeated, he takes care of business, he loves life and the sport, and he is a hard worker.”

Ending the night at 285, Bradley Hill created a victory out of his matchup against Nash Hutchmaker. Hill record a 4-1 decision victory, notching a takedown and an escape.

Drake Women’s Basketball with Efficient Attack Pushes Bulldogs Past Valpo, 83-54

VALPARAISO, Ind. – The Drake University women’s basketball team started a two-game road stretch with an 83-54 rout of Valparaiso. The Bulldogs (11-4, 4-0) used an explosive second half to sprint past Valpo (1-12, 0-4) in a sparsely populated Athletics-Recreation Center.

Katie Dinnebier scored the game’s first basket off the tip, burying a three from the wing. Grace Berg matched just a few possessions later with a three of her own.

The Beacons cut into Drake’s early lead when Saniya Jackson, Valpo’s leading scorer in their last time out at Southern Illinois, hit a pair of triples. Leah Earnest added to the Beacons’ short run with another three-pointer. Drake led 10-9 halfway through the first period.

Dinnebier went coast-to-coast for a deuce just before the first quarter horn as Drake weathered a sluggish opening frame to lead 18-17 after one.

Drake’s dynamic point guard started the second quarter with another three-point play, this time of the traditional variety with a layup and subsequent free throw. Later in the period, Valpo’s Olivia Sims mirrored Dinnebier with an and-one of her own to get the Beacons back within two. On the next trip down the floor, Anna Miller continued the run of old-fashioned threes with a hoop and some harm.

The Bulldogs were able to find a little footing as the first half wound to a close including a pair of free throws from Berg. The Bulldogs took a 31-24 lead into the half.

Drake came out of the halftime hiatus with some extra spunk, scoring in the paint on back-to-back possessions to force a Valpo timeout. The Bulldogs eventually built a lead of 13, their largest of the game up to that point. After a Beacon trey, Anna Miller answered with a pick-and-pop three to put her into double figures and re-extend Drake’s lead.

Ava Hawthorne joined in with her first score of the evening, a deep three from the top of the key, to grow the lead to over 20. Drake’s 16-0 run was halted by a Sims triple on the other end. Dinnebier then punctuated the third period with some flare as she banked in a heave from just inside half court to give the Dogs a 62-36 lead with just 10 minutes to play.

Anna Brown notched her name in the scorebook with a pair of perimeter jumpers as Drake rode their wave throughout the entire fourth quarter en route to an 83-54 victory.

“Winning on the road is never easy,” Suzie Glazer Burt Head Coach Allison Pohlman said. “We didn’t have to make too many adjustments, just needed to do what we do well. We came out a little tentative…got a little stifled in the first quarter and looked a little surprised at how well Valpo shot it to start. But I’m really proud of our entire team for how we responded in the second half…it’s never easy to win on the road.”

Katie Dinnebier continued her superb 2023-24 campaign with a game-high 26 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 4-of-5 three-point shooting. She also added six assists to lead all players.

Drake also got double-figure efforts from Grace Berg with 18 and Anna Miller with 16. Berg added eight rebounds while Miller led all players with 10 to complete her sixth double-double of the season.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to complete their road swing on Sunday, Jan. 14 at UIC.

There’s always nerves in the first doubles of the year and to get back on the court was a good experience for us. I was proud of them to pull through and get the doubles point. We’re going to regroup and get ready to play Florida Gulf Coast tomorrow morning.”

Atlantic’s Younger Wrestling Team filled with Depth

Sports

January 12th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Trojan Wrestling team is currently at a 7-7 in dual action but have a few talented wrestlers that have made this year impactful for Atlantic Head Wrestling Coach Tim Duff. Wrestlers like junior Aiden Smith (126) who has seen success at the state level and a 2A (113) runner up a year ago. His record speaks for the success he has achieved at 32-1.

Smith is not the only veteran wrestler with state experience for Atlantic. Sophomore Braxton Hass at (113) is 29-6 and a leader that Coach Duff has seen develop throughout the past few years.

The other Trojan wrestler who competed at state a year ago is junior Evan Sorensen wrestling at 285. Sorensen is 24-2 on the year, with his two losses coming at the competitive Council Bluffs Classic. Where the best regional wrestlers traveled to prove their prowess.

Not all of the athletes that have stood out to Coach Duff have had trips to State. One name that earned their spot after waiting patiently for three years is senior Taye Jordan (106) and another impressive record of 27-6. Who without a doubt earned their spot this year for Atlantic.

Due to weather issues Coach Duff and his squad will have to wait till next Thursday before they get to battle on the mats in Glenwood against the Rams and Clarinda.

The dual starts at 5:30pm at Glenwood High School.

CAM basketball seeking Consistency

Sports

January 12th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The (4-5) CAM Cougars are coming off a 61-55 loss to Ar-We-Va last Friday where the Cougars were down 17-4 by the end of the first quarter. Head Coach Ian Hunt credits the fast start of the Rockets and like the fight he saw in his team in the rest of the game.

The Cougars know how to play competitive and physical basketball. Their scoring leader is sophomore Collin Bower who is nearly averaging a double-double on the year. Bower sists at a 102-point total and 97 rebounds so far.

Bower isn’t the only one who has received recognition from Coach Hunt for the ability to score on the offensive end of the floor. Junior Chase Jahde has a strong understanding of the game and continues to prove his ability of creating mismatches for CAM.

Talent and hard work have kept CAM within ball games, but Coach Hunt knows the starts need to be consistent. His team can’t trail by the end of the first quarter, especially by double digits. These slow type starts which big deficits have made the early part of CAM’s campaign more difficult to capture wins.

Like many other schools in Iowa, CAM hasn’t played a game this past week due to weather conditions. However, that isn’t stopping the Cougars hunger and focus against their upcoming road trip against an (8-2) ACGC team.

The Chargers leading scorer is Noah Kading with over 15 points a game and shooting 50% on the floor. Coach Hunt gives plenty of credit to the success of ACGC’s basketball team this year.

Tip-off is set for 7;30pm on Monday January 15th.
