HEAR FROM HEAD COACH LARISSA LIBBY

“From my perspective, I felt like this meet felt more like our first meet of the season in comparison to last week. I am not sure with this being our first travel trip made them a little jittery.  After a lot of atypical mistakes early on, I felt like the team did a great job mounting a comeback on beam. Being able to close out as well as they did bodes well for the future.”

Kenlin provided a strong performance in the anchor position. She scored a career best, 9.900 for the sixth time. Sophomore Gianna Masella posted a career-high 9.850 to take second place on the event. Junior Ilka Juk tied for fifth with a 9.825, a new season best.  Junior Marissa Rojas matched her score from last meet of a 9.700. Muñoz and Volpe rounded out the rotation posting a 9.750 and 9.150, respectively.

Sophomore Avery Chambers matched Castillo by also scoring a 9.800. Freshman Alyse Karenbouer and Eva Volpe stuck season-bests of 9.650 and 9.775, respectively.

Attorney alleges an improper investigation led to charges against ISU/UI student athletes

January 23rd, 2024 by Ric Hanson

DES MOINES, Iowa (KCCI) –  An Iowa DCI agent is being accused of improperly investigating sports wagering by student-athletes. The investigation involves athletes and others associated with athletic programs from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. KCCI reports an attorney for Eyioma Uwazurike and Isaiah Lee made the accusation in a new filing Monday. The two former Cyclones football players are charged with identity theft and tampering with records related to illegal sports wagering.

In the new filing, Van M. Plumb says Special Agent Brian Sanger conducted a “warrantless search” by placing a GeoFence around certain dorms to investigate underage gambling. Plumb says this was done without any tips to DCI.

The filing also shows the software Sanger used gave him access to see online betting apps that were being used. However, he could not see if bets were actually being made, according to court documents.

Atlantic Basketball holds onto win thanks to Rasmussen’s Big Night

Sports

January 22nd, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Colton’s Rasmussen’s focused free throws in the final 23 seconds sent Atlantic to a nail-biting win over Creston 75-73 on Monday night in Creston. The Panthers led by as many as 10 points in the fourth quarter, but the Trojans fought their way back in the second half thanks to a 50-point performance from senior Colton Rasmussen.

The Panthers led 38-34 at halftime and the Panthers grew their lead to 10 at 55-45 at the start of the fourth.  The fourth quarter was back and forth until Rasmussen had the ball in the final 70 seconds and pulled up to the elbow for a smooth jump shoot. The Trojans had the lead at 71-70 and didn’t let go throughout the remainder of the fourth. The final two throws in the fourth quarter had one make and one miss by Brock Henderson to make it 75-73. Cael Turner received the pass off the second missed free throw and heaved it up at half court with seconds left. The shot missed and the Trojan’s bench celebrated. After the game Head Coach Dalton Franken talked about that feeling of pride, he had with the way the Trojans battled all night.

Coach Franken complimented the effort from not only Rasmussen, but the Atlantic squad as well.

Colton Rasmussen led the Trojans with 50 points. Nolan Waters added 14 points and Brock Henderson had 6 to help Atlantic move to 4-10 on the season. They travel back home Thursday to play Harlan.

Creston was led by 23 points from Jake Hoyt and 17 from Tony Davidson. The Panthers fall to 3-8 and will stay at home to face a competitive Glenwood team on Tuesday.

Atlantic Girl’s Basketball played sharp in win over Creston

Sports

January 22nd, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic Trojans Girl’s basketball team had no problems controlling the game against Creston on Monday night winning 64-42.

Paytn Harter led the team with a strong night scoring 28 points, Zoey Kirchoff added 9, Lila Wiederstein and Maddie Richter had 8 each.

The fast tempo for the Trojans was set when they come out of the gate starting the game on a 14-0 run, continually feeding the ball to Paytn Harter in the paint. Atlantic led 21-6 at the end of the first quarter and 32-14 at the half.

Creston tried to claw their way back in the second half going on multiple 5-0 runs, but each was answered immediately by Atlantic.  The Trojans continued to pull away in the second half with six players contributed to outscoring the Panthers 19-12 in the third quarter. The closest Creston got to cutting the Atlantic lead was when they were only down by 14 in the fourth. That was thanks in large part to the efforts of Ella Turner with 15 points and Kadley Bailey with 12.

Overall Head Coach Dan Vargason was pleased with the intensity Atlantic started the game with.

A win like this continues to show the potential Atlantic has at being a competitive team with the entire Hawkeye Ten conference.

Atlantic improves to 6-10 with the victory and head back home to face Harlan on Thursday. Creston sits at 4-10 and host Glenwood on Tuesday evening.

Northern Iowa men host Evansville Tuesday night

Sports

January 22nd, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Northern Iowa men take a four-game winning streak into Tuesday night’s game at home against Evansville. The Panthers are 5-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference after Saturday’s win over Southern Illinois.

That’s UNI coach Ben Jacobson. Evansville beat the Panthers in overtime in their first meeting back in early December, but the Aces have struggled without injured forward Ben Humrichhous.

Defense has been a trouble spot for much of this season, but Jacobson says the play of Nate Heise (HI-zee) and Trey Campbell has helped on that end of the court.

Evansville is 2-6 in the Valley and 11-8 overall.

Iowa’s Fran McCaffery on court storming

Sports

January 22nd, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery says it will be difficult to prevent court storming in college arenas. Hawkeye women’s star Caitlin Clark collided with a fan following Sunday’s at Ohio State prompting another round of calls to ban the celebrations. Also, Iowa is considering a plan to move the students closer to the floor at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

McCaffery does not see court storming going away.

The Hawkeye men return to action on Wednesday night by hosting Maryland.

Drake’s Darian DeVries on improved shooting

Sports

January 22nd, 2024 by Asa Lucas

Drake coach Darian DeVries says improved perimeter shooting is a big part of the Bulldog’s current four game win streak. During the last two weeks the Bulldogs have connected on better than 40 percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs have a share of the Missouri Valley Conference lead with a 7-1 record.

DeVries says several new players are gaining confidence.

Drake returns to action on Wednesday night at Missouri State.
