Iowa State adds James Kane as an assistant coach

June 18th, 2018 by admin

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State coach Steve Prohm has added James Kane to his staff as an assistant.

Prohm announced the hiring of Kane, a former assistant of his at Murray State, on Monday.

Prohm, with Kane on his staff, led the Racers to a 104-29 record from 2011-15. Murray State reached the postseason three times, including the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2012.

Kane moved to Dayton after Prohm accepted the head coaching job with the Cyclones three years ago.

Iowa State finished 13-18 in 2017-18, missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time in seven seasons.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Jack Flaherty and four relievers combined on a four-hitter, Matt Carpenter homered and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 5-0. Flaherty allowed just two hits while striking out seven in five innings, but he walked three and hit two batters and was pulled after throwing 97 pitches. John Brebbia gave up two hits in a scoreless sixth to earn his first major league win. Austin Gomber, Jordan Hicks and Bud Norris each pitched a hitless inning to end the Cardinals’ four-game losing streak.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chicago Cubs shortstop Javier Baez left in the top of the third inning against the Cardinals after being hit in the left elbow by a pitch from St. Louis starter Jack Flaherty. Baez, who leads the Cubs with 14 home runs, was replaced by Addison Russell.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Correa and the Houston Astros won their 11th straight game, finishing off a dominant 10-0 road trip by rallying past the Kansas City Royals 7-4. The World Series champion Astros swept their swing through Texas, Oakland and Kansas City, outscoring opponents 74-35. Last season, Houston had an 11-game winning streak end in Kansas City. This time, the Astros trailed 4-3 in the eighth inning before Correa led off with a tying homer.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Adalberto Mondesi is back with the Kansas City Royals as part of a roster shuffle. The Royals made six moves before playing Houston. Mondesi, the first player to make his major league debut in a World Series game, was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Gabe Holt hit a tiebreaking single in the fifth inning and drove in an insurance run in the ninth, leading Texas Tech to a stunning 6-3 win over defending national champion Florida in the College World Series. The Red Raiders won their CWS opener for the first time in their three appearances. They did it against the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament and a first-round draft pick in starting pitcher Brady Singer.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Luke Bonfield hit the go-ahead home run in the fifth inning and Arkansas broke open the game with an eight-run sixth on its way to an 11-5 win over Texas in the College World Series. The Razorbacks scored double-digit runs for the fourth time in six NCAA Tournament wins and had their highest total in 28 CWS games. The Longhorns lost their third straight Omaha opener since 2011.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Justin Allgaier won all three stages and the NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Iowa Speedway for his second victory of the season. Allgaier led 182 of 250 laps and survived an unlucky late caution by winning the restart.

Allgaier wins Xfinity race at Iowa, leads 182 of 250 laps

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Justin Allgaier won all three stages and the NASCAR Xfinity Series race Sunday at Iowa Speedway for his second victory of the season. Racing for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in JR Motorsports’ No. 7 Chevrolet Camaro, Allgaier led 182 of 250 laps and survived an unlucky late caution by winning the restart.

Allgaier also won last month at Dover. He has seven career victories — but few of those runs were as dominant as the one Allgaier pulled off in the searing heat on Iowa’s short track. Despite Allgaier’s dominance, Christopher Bell made him work to keep the lead throughout the final stage — at times closing to within a tenth of a second of taking the lead — before finishing second.

Daniel Hemric was third, followed by Cole Custer and Brandon Jones, and Riley Herbst was sixth in his series debut. Points leader Elliott Sadler lost a tire at the end of stage one. He finished 28th and saw his lead dwindle to just four points.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Addison Russell and Jason Heyward homered and Ian Happ’s double broke a 3-all tie as the Chicago Cubs rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3. Cubs starter Kyle Hendricks gave up three runs and seven hits in six innings, snapping a career-high three game losing streak. Brandon Morrow got the last three outs for his 16th save in 17 chances. Chicago trailed 2-0 and then 3-2 before Kyle Schwarber’s RBI single in the fifth tied the score and Happ’s double in the seventh put the Cubs ahead.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Houston Astros won their 10th straight game, with Dallas Keuchel getting three-run homers from Max Stassi and Alex Bregman to rout the Kansas City Royals 10-2. Jose Altuve hit a two-run double in the first inning to send the World Series champions on their way. The Astros had an 11-game win streak last season that ended in Kansas City. The Royals have lost five in a row and are just 2-12 since the calendar flipped to June.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals outfielder Jorge Soler will miss at least six weeks after breaking a bone in his left foot while leaving the batter’s box in Kansas City’s series opener against Houston. Soler had provided some much-needed punch to a struggling Kansas City offense. He’s third on the team with a .265 average, nine homers and 28 RBIs.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — North Carolina knocked Oregon State ace Luke Heimlich out of the game during a five-run third inning and went on to beat the Beavers 8-6 in the opening game of the College World Series. The Tar Heels used six pitchers in a four-and-a-half-hour slog in 95-degree heat. They turned back threats from one of the nation’s most potent offenses in the sixth and seventh innings.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Luke Alexander’s drive to right field got past Christian Jones in the bottom of the ninth inning, allowing Hunter Stovall to score from second base and give Mississippi State a 1-0 win over Washington in the College World Series. It was the Bulldogs’ third walk-off win, and fourth on their last at-bat, in their last eight NCAA Tournament games.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Brett Moffitt won the NASCAR Truck Series race Saturday night at Iowa Speedway, his hometown track. The 25-year-old Moffitt is from nearby Grimes.
