ST. LOUIS (AP) — Spot starter John Gant pitched one-hit ball over a career-high seven innings, Marcell Ozuna hit a two-run double and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cleveland Indians 4-0. It was the third consecutive win for the Cardinals and the 10,000th regular season victory for the franchise. Cleveland had won seven straight. Mike Clevinger allowed two runs over five innings, and the Indians had just four hits.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brad Keller pitched seven innings of two-hit ball, Lucas Duda and Rosell Herrera drove in the only runs and the Kansas City Royals beat the Los Angeles Angels 2-0. Wily Peralta earned his first career save in 136 career big league games. It was a makeup of a game that was frozen out in April.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Falcons have signed a one-year deal with safety Ron Parker, who spent the last five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The 30-year-old Parker had 318 tackles, nine interceptions and seven sacks in 80 games with the Chiefs.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyler Skaggs has returned to the mound for the Los Angeles Angels, the first of what manager Mike Scioscia hopes is a wave of healthy players. The Angels expect an update on Shohei Ohtani later this week. Players such as Garrett Richards and Zack Cozart also are making progress as they return from injuries.

HOUSTON (AP) — Yuli Gurriel hit a grand slam in Houston’s eight-run second inning, helping Gerrit Cole and the Astros beat the Kansas City Royals 11-3. Gurriel finished with three hits as the AL West-leading Astros won for the 15th time in 17 games. Jose Altuve drove in two runs and scored twice, and Evan Gattis connected for a pinch-hit homer.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Luke Weaver settled in after a shaky first inning to win for the first time in eight starts and Jose Martinez hit a three-run homer to pace the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Weaver (4-6) allowed two runs, both in the first, on five hits in 5 2/3 innings.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Devon Allen won the 110-meter hurdles Sunday to highlight the final session of the USATF Outdoor championships. The former Oregon receiver crossed in 13.452 seconds _ with Grant Holloway in second at 13.454 _ after a weather delay that lasted just under three hours.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Oregon State has won 109 of 127 baseball games over two seasons with mostly the same cast of players. They see winning a national championship as the only way to validate their body of work. Standing between Oregon State and the title is Arkansas in the best-of-three College World Series finals starting Monday night. Blaine Knight will be Razorbacks’ starting pitcher in Game 1. Beavers coach Pat Casey hasn’t named a starter.

Weaver, Martinez pace Cards past Brewers

Sports

June 24th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Luke Weaver settled in after a shaky first inning to win for the first time in eight starts and Jose Martinez hit a three-run homer to pace the St. Louis Cardinals to an 8-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Weaver (4-6) allowed two runs, both in the first, on five hits in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out a season-high nine and walked two for his first victory since May 11. Martinez’s 11th homer capped a five-run fourth when St. Louis erased a 2-1 deficit.

Cards: OF Tommy Pham was not in the lineup after feeling ill before the game. “He is just under the weather,” manager Mike Matheny said. “It has been going through our clubhouse. Different guys are passing it around. Unfortunately when you spend this much time together, is this kind of space, on flights, it is going to run its course.”

UP NEXT
Cards: RHP John Gant (1-2, 4.39) opens the three-game series at Cleveland on Monday. Gant, filling in for injured Michael Wacha, was sent down to Triple-A Memphis on May 31 and recalled on Thursday.

Bricks from University of Iowa’s stadium popular with fans

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Bricks from the University of Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium have proven to be a popular souvenir for Hawkeye fans when there is construction on the facility. The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports Bravo Sports Marketing is selling bricks from the stadium with a commemorative plaque for $99 apiece.

The company acquired about 8,000 bricks from the stadium after a 2004 renovation and sold them all quickly. So Bravo Sports’ Dave Gallagher says it was natural for the company to bid on 1,200 bricks that were available last summer.

The bricks were all washed with a special detergent, dried and given a special plaque. They all come with a certificate of authenticity from the university. Only about 400 remain available.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) — Carlos Correa hit a game-ending RBI single in the 12th inning, lifting the Houston Astros to a 4-3 win over the Kansas City Royals. George Springer led off the 12th with a walk, and Alex Bregman followed with a bloop single into shallow right field that fell between three players. An error by Ryan Goins allowed Springer to advance to third. After reigning AL MVP Jose Altuve was walked intentionally, Correa singled into right-center gap against Justin Grimm.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Kevin Abel and Jake Mulholland combined on a four-hitter, Tyler Malone hit his third home run of the College World Series, and Oregon State survived some ninth-inning drama to beat Mississippi State 5-2 to reach the best-of-three finals against Arkansas. As they did in 2006, when they won the first of two straight national titles, the Beavers came back from losing their CWS opener to win four straight and make the finals.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Yadier Molina homered twice to back a strong start by Miles Mikolas and lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers. Molina’s two-run homer in the sixth inning off reliever Jeremy Jeffress gave St. Louis the lead and the Cardinals held on behind the pitching of Mikolas and four relievers.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Shelby Houlihan stormed past Jenny Simpson to win the women’s 1,500 meters at the USATF national outdoor championships in Des Moines. Houlihan, who grew up in nearby Sioux City, passed Simpson _ also a native Iowan _ with 50 meters left to knock off the seven-time national champion in the event.

MADISON, Ill. (AP) — Justin Haley won the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Gateway Motorsports Park for his first career victory, pulling away on a wild last restart. The 19-year-old Haley took the lead when Kyle Busch Motorsports teammates Noah Gragson and Todd Gilliland made contact racing for the lead on a restart with seven laps to go. Haley then held off GMS Racing teammate Johnny Sauter on the final restart with two laps left
