AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women’s basketball program and head coach Bill Fennelly announced today an addition to the 2018 signing class, as Inès Nezerwa signed on to play for the Cyclones. With the signing of Nezerwa, Iowa State now has five new additions this season, joining Maddie Frederick, Ashley Joens, Morgan Kane and Jade Thurmon who are all signed on to compete for the Cyclones next season and enrolled in classes.

“We are excited to add Inès to our Cyclone family,” Fennelly said. “Adding a player with her length and size is a major bonus for this year’s team. Inès is a hard worker in all she does and will be fun for our fans to get to know on and off the court.”

Nezerwa is a 6-3 forward who hails from Nyakabiga, Burundi, but has spent the 2017-18 season at Jacksonville College in Jacksonville, Texas. Last season, she netted 18.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game, while shooting 51.7 percent from the floor. Sports

July 19th, 2018 by admin

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Kyle Kempt is one of 26 quarterbacks named to the 2018 Davey O’Brien Award watch list, announced today by the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee.

The Davey O’Brien Award is given annually to the nation’s best quarterback and is named after the 1938 Heisman Trophy QB from TCU.

Kempt, a former walk-on, emerged as ISU’s starter in the fifth game of the 2017 season and directed the Cyclones to a victory in the Liberty Bowl.

Kempt was 5-3 as a starter, including two wins over top-five opponents (Oklahoma, TCU).

In just eight games played, the Massillon, Ohio native broke ISU’s single-season completion mark (66.3) and tossed 15 TDs to just three interceptions, tying for fifth on ISU’s season TD pass chart.

Kempt threw a TD pass in all eight games and posted a pair of 300-yard outings, including 343-yard effort in the OU win to earn Davey O’Brien National QB of the Week honors.

Kempt enters his senior season as ISU’s career leader in completion percentage (66.5) and with a streak of 130 consecutive passes without an interception, the sixth-best string in school history.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State All-American running back David Montgomery was named to the Doak Walker Award watch list for the second-straight season, announced today by PwC SMU Athletic Forum.

The Doak Walker Award is given annually to the nation’s best running back and is named for the 1948 Heisman Trophy winner.

Montgomery became the 14th player in school history to crack the 1,000-yard barrier in 2017 when he rushed for 1,146 yards. He ranked third in the Big 12 in yards per game at 88.2.

The Cincinnati, Ohio native was one of the toughest backs to bring down, forcing 109 missed tackles to earn First-Team All-American honors by Pro Football Focus and First-Team All-Big 12 accolades.

Montgomery tallied six 100-yard rushing games and 11 TDs a year ago.

He also proved to be a threat as a pass-catcher, ranking fifth on the team in receptions with 36, the second-best season total by a Cyclone back in school history.

Montgomery, who has been named to numerous preseason All-America lists, will enter his junior year with 1,709 rushing yards, eight 100-yard rushing games, 49 receptions and 425 receiving yards in his career.

Montgomery made the Big 12 Preseason Team and was honored as a Maxwell Award watch list member on Monday, a yearly award for the nation’s best college football player.
