ST. LOUIS (AP) — Charlie Blackmon and Carlos Gonzalez each went deep, Jon Gray pitched into the eighth inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 6-3. Gray struck out five over 7 1/3 innings, helping Colorado finish the month 17-6. Gray allowed three runs, two earned, with four hits and two walks. Wade Davis got his 31st save in 35 opportunities with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan O’Hearn hit a two-run homer in his major league debut, leading Danny Duffy and the Kansas City Royals to a 4-2 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Brett Phillips also hit a two-run shot for last-place Kansas City, which had dropped four of five. Duffy pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings, rebounding nicely from a rocky start against Detroit.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tommy Pham was traded by the St. Louis Cardinals to the Tampa Bay Rays, a year after establishing himself as one of the NL’s top outfielders. St. Louis sent the 30-year-old and $500,000 in international signing bonus allocation to the Rays for a trio of minor leaguers: outfielder Justin Williams, left-hander Genesis Cabrera and right-hander Roel Ramirez. The Cardinals are likely to miss the postseason for a third straight year for the first time since 1997-99.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have placed outfielder Brian Goodwin on the 10-day disabled list with a strained left groin. Goodwin got hurt running the bases in the seventh inning of Saturday night’s 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees in the second game of a doubleheader. Goodwin is 8 for 17 with a homer and four RBIs in five games with Kansas City after he was acquired in a trade with Washington.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa safety Brandon Snyder is leaving the program as a graduate transfer and lineman Tristan Wirfs will be suspended for the season opener after getting charged with intoxicated driving. Snyder spent most of the past two years working his way back onto the field after twice tearing the ACL in his left knee. Snyder returned last season to return an interception 89 yards for a score against Illinois, but he re-injured his knee in the same game.

Snyder was then suspended for last season’s Pinstripe Bowl after being charged with drunken driving. Wirfs, a sophomore who’s expected to start at right tackle, was arrested over the weekend and charged with driving a scooter while intoxicated.

The St. Louis Cardinals have traded outfielder Tommy Pham to the Tampa Bay Rays for three minor league players, outfielder Justin Williams, left-handed pitcher Genesis Cabrera and right-handed pitcher Roel Ramirez. The Rays also received international cap space in the four-player trade announced Tuesday, baseball’s deadline for trades without waivers. There had already been a flurry of moves this week, including closers Roberto Osuna (to Houston) and Ken Giles (to Toronto) switching teams, Seattle picking up Adam Warren and Zach Duke, Lance Lynn joining the New York Yankees, Adam Duvall moving to Atlanta and Ian Kinsler added to the Boston Red Sox.

The 30-year-old Pham has been a member of the Cardinals organization since being drafted in 2006. He was batting .248 this season with 14 home runs and 41 RBIs as St. Louis opened the day seven games out of the NL Central lead during a season in which the team has already fired manager Mike Matheny. Williams, 22, is a left-handed hitting outfielder who was batting .258 for the Durham Bulls (AAA). Cabrera, 21, is 7-6 mark with a 4.12 ERA in 21 games for Montgomery of the Southern League (AA) and Ramirez, 23, was 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 26 games as a reliever for the Montgomery Biscuits.

ST. LOUIS, MO – July 31, 2018 – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this morning a four-player trade with the Tampa Bay Rays, acquiring outfielder Justin Williams, left-handed pitcher Genesis Cabrera and right-handed pitcher Roel Ramirez in exchange for outfielder Tommy Pham and International Cap Space.

Williams, 22, is a left-handed hitting outfielder who was batting .258 with 8 home runs and 46 RBI for the Durham Bulls (AAA), where earlier this season he was named an International League All-Star.  The 6-2, 215 pound Williams hails from Houma, Louisiana.  Williams, a former 2nd round draft pick by Arizona (52nd overall) in 2013, made his Major League debut earlier this month.

Cabrera, 21, has fashioned a 7-6 mark with a 4.12 ERA in 21 games (20 starts) for Montgomery of the Southern League (AA), striking out 124 batters in 113.2 innings pitched while limiting the opposition to .218 batting mark.  The 6-1, 170-pound native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic was named to the Southern League All-Star team last month.

Ramirez, 23, was 3-1 with a 3.32 ERA in 26 games as a reliever for the Montgomery Biscuits, fanning 46 batters in 40.2 innings.  The 6-1, 210-pound Ramirez is from Laredo, Texas.

Pham, 30, a member of the Cardinals organization since being drafted in 2006, was batting .248 this season with 14 home runs and 41 RBI.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Marcell Ozuna hit his first career game-ending homer in the 10th inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals snapped Colorado’s four-game win streak with a 5-4 victory over the Rockies. Ozuna connected against Jake McGee, sending a one-out drive deep to center for his 13th homer. The slugger also extended his homer streak to three straight games. Dakota Hudson got three outs for his first career win.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Cardinals RHP Carlos Martinez left his start against Colorado in the fifth inning with a right shoulder strain. Martinez was activated from the disabled list prior to the game after missing one start with a strained right oblique.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — Eric Berry has twice overcome season-ending injuries, and the way the Kansas City Chiefs safety came back from a cancer diagnosis to play the following season was nothing short of inspirational. Now, Berry is back in the middle of a Chiefs defense that has been retooled after letting them down last season.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Scott Frost’s championship rings and other items reported stolen from his home have been found. Police say the new Nebraska coach located them in his garage. Frost had reported Sunday night that burglars entered an unlocked garage door over the weekend and stole memorabilia originally estimated at more than $100,000. Some of the memorabilia is still missing.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs was arrested over the weekend and charged with driving while intoxicated. Iowa City police records show that Wirfs, a tackle entering his sophomore season, was taken into custody just before 2 a.m. Sunday. The Hawkeyes have yet to announce any punishment for Wirfs, a native of Mount Vernon, Iowa. Athletic director Gray Barta says Wirfs will be subject to the school’s student-athlete code of conduct.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — North Dakota State has been unanimously picked to win the Missouri Valley Football Conference title. The Bison, who’ve won or shared the league crown in each of the last seven seasons, received all 39 first-place votes in a poll conducted by league coaches, media and sports information directors.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Speedway and the IndyCar series say next year’s race at the track in Newton will be held at night. The series says overwhelming fan feedback prompted the move. The track will host an IndyCar race for the 13th year in a row on Saturday, July 20, 2019.

NEWTON, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Speedway and the IndyCar series announced today (Monday), that next year’s race in Newton will be at night. The series says that the race will move back to a nighttime start “in response to overwhelming fan feedback.” The track will host an IndyCar race for the 13th year in a row on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Iowa will pair the IndyCar race with an ARCA stock car event the night before. The speedway will also host NASCAR Xfinity races on June 16 and July 27.

The NASCAR Truck Series will be Iowa’s season opener on June 15 of next year. The track concluded its 2018 season on Saturday, when Christopher Bell beat Justin Allgaier for his third straight Xfinity series win.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa offensive lineman Tristan Wirfs was arrested over the weekend and charged with driving while intoxicated. Iowa City police records show that Wirfs, a tackle entering his sophomore season, was taken into custody just before 2 a.m. Sunday. He was driving a scooter and police say he failed a field sobriety test with a 0.129 blood-alcohol level. In Iowa, the legal limit is 0.08 but for those under 21 the limit is 0.02. Wirfs is 19.

The Hawkeyes have yet to announce any punishment for Wirfs, a native of Mount Vernon, Iowa. Athletic director Gray Barta said he is disappointed in Wirfs’ decision making and that Wirfs will be subject to the school’s student-athlete code of conduct. Last week, defensive lineman Brady Reiff was arrested after Iowa City police say mistook a police car for an Uber. Police say he registered a blood-alcohol content of 0.204.

The Hawkeyes, who finished 8-5 a year ago, open the season on Sept. 1 against Northern Illinois.
