Haliburton – former ISU basketball great – to play in the NBA All-Star game

Sports

January 27th, 2024 by Ric Hanson

INDIANAPOLIS (KCCI) — A former Iowa State basketball great is heading to the NBA All-Star game next month, and he’ll take the floor as a starter. Tyrese Haliburton, who stars for the Indiana Pacers now after spending two years at Iowa State, was named one of the starting guards for the Eastern Conference ahead of the Feb. 18 All-Star game, which his Pacers will host in Indianapolis.

Haliburton will be joined in the starting backcourt by Milwaukee Bucks guard Damian Lillard, along with frontcourt players Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics), reigning MVP Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers) and two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo (Bucks). Haliburton was the leading vote-getter among Eastern Conference guards in all three categories — the fan vote, the player rank and the media rank.

This is Haliburton’s second All-Star appearance in four years as a pro. He came off the bench in last year’s All-Star game to post 18 points on 7-for-9 shooting for Team LeBron. Haliburton joined Iowa State in the class of 2018, entering the starting lineup in his second game as a Cyclone and never relinquishing his starting spot. He helped Iowa State win the Big 12 Tournament in 2019 as a freshman before becoming an All-Big 12 player as a sophomore despite a season-ending injury in February of that year.

He set a program record with 17 assists in one game in win over Southern on Dec. 9, 2018. Haliburton was the No. 12 pick in the 2020 NBA Draft after leaving ISU following his sophomore season.

AHSTW Basketball learning to grow through choppy season

Sports

January 27th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The (3-11) AHSTW Basketball team has had a bumpy ride on the season so far. Currently riding a nine-game losing streak and coming off a 62-59 loss to Logan Magnolia Friday night. In a season full of opposition and contested losses, Head Coach Grant Harris is taking a constructive look on the year and finding mini victories.

One of those mini victories for the Vikings on the year has been the play from junior Luke Sternberg who leads the team in scoring with 17 points a game and assists at 29. The humility that Sternberg has shown throughout the season has impressed coach Harris.

Another Viking player who is showing drastic improvement with their high amount effort is young sophomore Collin Harder. Harder is second on the team with scoring at 12 points per game and Coach Harris has enjoyed seeing his progression.

Harder is not the only sophomore that has caught Coach Harris’s attention this season. Kaden Jorgensen is the leading rebounder on the team with and Drew Lee. Both have shown a strong work ethic on the year and a desire to get more minutes. They give a glimpse of the bright future AHSTW has.

Coming up for the Vikings is their toughest test of the year. They will be at home facing an undefeated (16-0) Underwood squad. To get a win and end their nine-game losing streak, Coach Harris wants his team to play physical.

Tip-off is set for 4:30pm at the AHSTW Community School Gym.

Atlantic Basketball looked refreshed in win over St. Albert

Sports

January 26th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic basketball team picked up their second straight win over a Hawkeye Ten conference opponent on Friday night. The Trojans were tied at 29-29 midway through the second quarter and used a 9-2 run towards the end of the second quarter to take a 7-point led into the half. Atlantic clamped St. Albert down defensively and closed the game winning both quarters by at least 14.

It was a solid team effort for Atlantic with three players finishing in double figures. Nolan Waters sparked the Trojans in the first half with 4 three pointers. Colton Rasmussen had another solid night contributing 30 points to always give Atlantic an offensive outlet. Gavin McLaren then had 18 of his 20 points in the second half to help secure the win. While Rasmussen’s 30 kept the Trojans calm, Waters offensive performance on the night impressed Head Coach Dalton Franken.

The Trojans improved to 5-10 on the season. Next up is a trip to Red Oak on Tuesday and it’s a game Coach Franken is prepared for.

St. Albert was led by 26 points from Nick Ballenger. The Saintes drop to 4-11 and will next take on AHSTW Tuesday.

Atlantic Girls Basketball show good fight at St. Albert

Sports

January 26th, 2024 by Asa Lucas

The Atlantic girls’ basketball team got within six points of St. Albert for a long stretch of second quarter but couldn’t get the key basket needed to get closer. The Saintes came away with a 58-38 win and improved to 14-1 on the season.

It was a close game midway through the first quarter, until Atlantic started to struggle mightily against zone defenses which allowed 10-0 run to end the fourth. St. Albert continued to hit triples throughout the second to lead 29-20 at the break. The third and fourth quarter followed suit with Atlantic never finding their groove and the Saintes kept hitting enough threes to keep the Trojans out of harm’s way.

Even with a 20-point loss, Head Coach Dan Vargason noticed the higher amount of energy and intensity from his team.

Lily Krohn led St. Albert with 16 points, Avah Underwood had 11, and Missy Evezik added 10. The Saintes will travel to AHSTW on Saturday.

Atlantic got 22 points from Paytn Harter and 4 from Zoey Kirchhoff. With how close the game was in the first half, Coach Vargason noted the competitive nature his team carries within themselves.

The Trojans fall to 6-12 on the season and will travel to face Red Oak on Tuesday.
