AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State wide receiver Hakeem Butler leads the team in receptions, yardage and touchdowns. His average of 24 yards a catch leads the nation. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says Butler is one of the most athletic gifted receivers he has ever coached and believes he’ll only get better. Iowa State hosts Baylor on Saturday.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Martin Krampelj and Mitch Ballock scored 13 points apiece and Creighton turned back Western Illinois 78-67 in the season opener for both teams. There were six ties and eight lead changes in the first half before Ballock hit a 35-foot buzzer beating 3-poiner to put the Bluejays on top 43-41 at the break.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Amir Coffey opened the season for Minnesota with 18 points in 24 minutes and Daniel Oturu had 14 points and eight rebounds in his college debut, guiding the Gophers to a 104-76 victory over Omaha. Dupree McBrayer scored 17 points on 5-for-6 shooting from 3-point range and Jordan Murphy pitched in 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for the Gophers, who shot 63 percent from the floor and built a 54-26 advantage in points in the paint. Zach Jackson led the Mavericks with 21 points.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Nebraska transfer Michael Jacobson led four players in double digits with 17 points, fellow transfer Marial Shayok had 14 and Iowa State rolled past Alabama State 79-53 on Tuesday night.

Lindell Wigginton chipped in with 13 for the Cyclones (1-0), who’ll get their first major test on Friday when Missouri, their old Big 12 rivals, visit Hilton Coliseum.

Iowa State sophomore forward Cam Lard was on the bench but not in uniform after spending much of the summer at a wellness center following some legal issues. Lard averaged 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds a game in 2017-18.

As for the game itself, Shayok scored eight points in the opening 2:10 to help the Cyclones take an early double-digit lead it never came close to relinquishing.

Iowa State struggled at times from there as it worked freshmen Talen Horton-Tucker, Tyrese Haliburton, George Conditt IV and Zion Griffin into the rotation for the first time. But a lineup featuring Haliburton, Lewis and Griffin sparked a late 19-5 run, with Haliburton canning a 3 to make it 65-41 with just over six minutes left.

Haliburton scored 12 points in 29 minutes.

Reginald Gee had 15 points to lead Alabama State (0-1).

THE BIG PICTURE

Iowa State: Horton-Tucker started, but he got off to a very sluggish start in his debut. He missed six of his first seven shots — including four 3s — and finished 3-of-12 shooting for six points. Shayok, on the other hand, looked like the perimeter threat the Cyclones had been searching for.

Alabama State: The Cyclones will likely prove to be the toughest team the Hornets, coming off back-to-back 8-23 seasons, will play all year. At least they got it out of the way as soon as possible.

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State sophomore guard Lindell Wigginton has been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 50 list as announced this morning on ESPN’s Sports Center.

Wigginton, who has been named Preseason All-Big 12 and to the Naismith Trophy Watch List, returns for his second season at ISU as the Big 12’s top returning scorer. The Dartmouth, Nova Scotia native averaged a Cyclone freshman record 16.7 points per game last season. He joined Kevin Durant (Texas) as the only freshmen in Big 12 history to average 16.5 points while making 65 three-pointers at a 40 percent clip.

The Wooden Award watch lists are published throughout the season. Players not on the current list are eligible for inclusion in later lists.

Wigginton and the Cyclones open the 2018-19 season tonight against Alabama State. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. with Cyclones.tv broadcasting.

The attorney representing over 400 youth basketball players sexually exploited by their coach says the Iowa Barnstormers Basketball organization and the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) failed to protect the young athletes. Last month, former Iowa Barnstormers basketball coach Greg Stephen pleaded guilty to secretly filming or soliciting nude images from about 400 boys over 12 years. Attorney Guy Cook says he wants this to be a wake-up call for youth sports organizations. “The point of this lawsuit is that there are very specific protocols that can be taken to minimize, if not eliminate this risk, which were not done,” Cook said at a news conference Monday.

According to Cook, the class action lawsuit filed in Johnson County District Court could result in damages exceeding $10 million. Cook said there are steps youth sports groups can take to prevent abuse, but these organizations didn’t enforce any of those guidelines. For example, the A-A-U handbook states coaches shall not share a hotel room with athletes. “And had this code provision been followed, enforced, and subject to the provisions within the Barnstormer Basketball of Iowa operation, none of this would’ve happened,” Cook said. “Utter failure by Barnstormer Basketball of Iowa and the AAU.”

Cook is calling on other victims to join the lawsuit to help prevent future abuse in youth sports. Greg Stephen, Barnstormers Basketball of Iowa, and the AAU are named in the lawsuit, but more defendants may be added.

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have returned from a long weekend off to face the daunting challenge of playing the Chiefs in Kansas City on Sunday. The Chiefs opened as 15-point favorites and the line grew to 16 ½ points on Monday. The Cardinals made several roster moves during their bye week, including releasing former starting QB Sam Bradford.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s Devine Ozigbo needs 204 yards over the final three games to become the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher since Ameer Abdullah in 2014. Ozigbo began the season No. 3 on the depth chart and wasn’t a starter until the fourth game. Ozigbo originally made a verbal commitment to Iowa State in 2014. He changed his mind when Nebraska started showing interest because he had seen what Rex Burkhead accomplished in Lincoln. Ozigbo and Burkhead grew up in the same area of Texas.
