Wigginton-less Cyclones pound Missouri 76-59

Sports

By LUKE MEREDITH, AP Sports Writer

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State fans showed up to Hilton Coliseum on Friday night to the sight of star Lindell Wigginton in a cardinal-colored cast instead of a cardinal and gold jersey.

It was of somewhat small solace that the Cyclones played so well without their most talented player — whose timetable for a return to the court was described by coach Steve Prohm as a “week-to-week thing.”

Marial Shayok scored 20 points, Nick Weiler-Babb had 16 with six assists and Iowa State throttled Missouri 76-59 in a matchup of old Big 12 rivals.

Michael Jacobson scored 15 points for the Cyclones (2-0), who avenged a blowout loss in Columbia from last season with a surprisingly complete performance orchestrated by Weiler-Babb.

“He’s a high-level point guard. He’s the most cerebral player on our team,” Prohm said. “He’s a senior point guard and he played like it.”

Iowa State closed the first half on a 9-0 run and pushed its lead to 47-30 early in the second half. Missouri cut it to 10, but the undermanned Cyclones reeled off eight straight points to jump back on top 61-43. Weiler-Babb’s scoop with 4:52 to go made it 70-49, a bucket that put the Tigers out of their misery.

Mark Smith scored 15 points to lead Missouri (1-1), which committed 25 turnovers. Kevin Puryear had 10 points, but he only took five shots.

“At one point, it seemed like it was one after another. We need to have better focus at protecting the ball,” Puryear said.

Wigginton, a preseason All-Big 12 selection, showed up to Friday’s game against Missouri with a cast on his left foot that was put on Thursday.

Prohm called the injury a strain, adding that Wigginton will spend a week in a cast, a week in a boot and then, hopefully, go through and aggressive rehabilitation to try and get back onto the floor as soon as possible.

Wigginton averaged 16.7 points a game last season and nearly declared for the NBA Draft before returning to school. Wigginton had 13 points in Iowa State’s 79-53 win over Alabama State on Tuesday.

“I don’t have a timeframe,” Prohm said. “To get him back the quickest, we needed to immobilize his foot right away.”

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Megan Gustafson had 23 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and four blocks as No. 13 Iowa never trailed Friday night in its 90-77 win over Oral Roberts.

Stewart scored six points during a 15-3 run over the first four minutes and Oral Roberts (1-1) trailed by double figures the rest of the way. A 9-2 spurt midway through the second quarter gave the Hawkeyes a 28-point lead and they went into the fourth leading 68-47.

ORU hit seven of its 16 3-pointers in the fourth, trimming its deficit to 86-75 with 37 seconds left but Stewart answered with a 3-point play.

Lakota Beatty had a career-high 26 points and Maya Mayberry scored 16 for the Golden Eagles.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Zach Jackson scored 23 points, KJ Robinson added 15 and Omaha used a big second half to beat Buena Vista 94-58 on Friday. It was tied at 44 at halftime before Omaha went on a 25-0 run over a nine-minute stetch for a 30-point lead. Buena Vista was held to 14 points in the second half.

Matt Pile scored 13 points, Wanjang Tut 12 and Mitchell Hahn 11 for Omaha (1-1). Hahn scored nine of Omaha’s 12 points over the final 4:15 of the first half.

Jackson entered the season needing just eight points to reach 1,000 career points and he scored 21 in the opener. He and Hahn are serving as the team captains for the second straight season.
Robert Hawkins and Dominic Sesma each scored 12 points for Buena Vista. First-year coach Todd Lorensen was an assistant at Omaha from 2008-10.

Vikings to the ‘Ship, AHSTW beats Edgewood-Colesburg in Class A Semis

Sports

November 9th, 2018 by admin

The AHSTW Vikings are heading to the Class A State Football Championship next Thursday after beating Edgewood-Colesburg 39-12 on Friday afternoon at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls. AHSTW will take an unblemished 12-0 record into the title game against the also undefeated and 12-0 Hudson Pirates next Thursday at 1:30pm at the UNI-Dome.

AHSTW had to work hard to get to the next round. Edgewood-Colesburg controlled the first quarter of the game and scored first on a long 13-play touchdown drive on their second possession. Quarterback Ethan Streicher capped off that drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to make it 6-0 after a failed two point conversion.

AHSTW changed the tide in the second quarter, starting with a 68-yard bomb from Blake Osbahr to Drake Partridge to get them on the board and lead 7-6 with 7:20 left in the half. Gabe Pauley would then add two touchdown runs on the next two AHSTW possessions to push the lead to 22-6. The AHSTW coaching staff then wisely used a couple timeouts to make Edgewood-Colesburg punt the ball at the end of the half. A bad snap on the punt allowed AHSTW to take the punter Streicher down at the 11-yard line with :17 left in the half. On the next play Osbahr found Partridge in the end zone for another score to make it 29-6 at half.

AHSTW scored on the opening possession of the second half on another Pauley run and later added a 34-yard field goal to cap their scoring. Edgewood-Colesburg got one second half touchdown on a pass from Streicher to Spencer Staner.

The Vikings will now try to win their first title as AHSTW. The last title for the program was Avo-Ha in 1974.

We’ll have coverage of that Class A Championship game between AHSTW and Hudson next Thursday with pregame at 12:30pm and kickoff set for 1:30pm.

Listen to postgame interviews with Head Coach Davis Pattee, Gabe Pauley, Blake Osbahr, and Drake Partridge below.

Hawkeye women open against Oral Roberts

Sports

November 9th, 2018 by Ric Hanson

The Iowa Hawkeye women open a season of lofty expectations tonight (Friday night) when they host Oral Roberts. The Hawks will be without junior guard Kathleen Doyle who suffered a broken hand in practice last week.

With Doyle out they may need more minutes senior Tania Davis, who is working her way back after an ACL injury cut last season short.
