Bohannon, No. 21 Iowa hold off Indiana 76-70

Sports

February 23rd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — With his teammates struggling to get anything going, Iowa’s Jordan Bohannon stepped up and pulled off perhaps the best 15-minutes stretch of his career. Bohannon hit three 3s in overtime, including one with 20.2 seconds left, and 21st-ranked Iowa rallied to beat Indiana 76-70 in overtime on Friday night for its fifth win in six games. Tyler Cook had 18 points and Bohannon added 17 for the Hawkeyes (21-6, 10-6 Big Ten) — all of them in the final 15:45 of the second half and overtime.

Bohannon, whose 3 pointers with 28 seconds left in regulation forced overtime, buried another one to put Iowa ahead 68-65 with 2:47 to go. De’Ron Davis answered with a 3-point play, but Bohannon hit a 3 off a loose ball with 2 minutes left to give the Hawkeyes a 71-68 lead. Cook’s free throw with 1:10 left made it a two-possession game, but Morgan responded with a putback. Indiana’s defense forced Bohannon to jack up a 3 at the shot clock buzzer. But the junior calmly knocked it through, and after the game McCaffery was left to reminisce about how he thought Bohannon reminded him of Steph Curry during the recruiting process. Morgan had 15 and Langford scored 14 points for Indiana (13-14, 4-12), who’ve dropped 12 of 13. The Hoosiers might have cruised to the win if they hadn’t shot 12 of 22 from the line.

Even with the win, Iowa could find itself on the outside looking in when Monday’s poll comes out. Iowa plays at Ohio State on Tuesday.

Evansville finished with only 13 points in the second half.

Brenni Rose added 13 points and Sammie Bachrodt 11, with both making three 3-pointers for the Bulldogs, who won their sixth straight game and reached 20 victories for the fifth straight season. Hawkeye broadcaster Dolphin suspended through the rest of the basketball season

Sports

February 22nd, 2019 by Jim Field

Feb. 22, 2019 — Hawkeye Sports Properties, the multimedia rights manager for University of Iowa Athletics, today announced it has suspended play-by-play announcer Gary Dolphin indefinitely through the remaining basketball season. The decision follows an inappropriate comment made by Dolphin during Tuesday’s broadcast of the Iowa men’s basketball game against Maryland.

Gary Dolphin issued the following statement: “During the broadcast, I used a comparison when trying to describe a talented Maryland basketball player. In no way did I intend to offend or disparage the player. I take full responsibility for my inappropriate word choice and offer a sincere apology to him and anyone else who was offended. I wish the Iowa Hawkeye players, coaches and fans all the very best as they head into the final stretch of the season. I will use this as an opportunity to grow as a person and learn more about unconscious bias.”

For the remainder of the basketball season, Jim Albracht and Bobby Hansen will serve as the radio announcers for Iowa’s men’s basketball games.

UNI wrestlers edge out Iowa State

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa. – The No. 11 Iowa State wrestling team (10-3, 6-2 Big 12) fell to in-state foe No. 17 Northern Iowa (7-5, 7-1 Big 12) Thursday night, 22-13. The Cyclones won four out of the 10 bouts, but ultimately fell to the Panthers inside a sold out West Gymnasium.

No. 7 Austin Gomez got things going for the Cyclones at 133, picking up six takedowns in a dominant victory over Jack Skudlarczyk. The redshirt freshman turned the Panther twice for a pair of four-point near falls. Gomez tech falled Skudlarczyk 21-4 in 4:02.

Chase Straw came up big for Iowa State with a decision over Paden Moore at 157 pounds to pull the Cyclones to within one point of the Panthers at intermission. Straw got off to a hot start with two takedowns in the first period and cruised to a 9-4 win with 1:12 of riding time.

At 184 pounds, No. 15 Sam Colbray got two takedowns in the last minute of the match to upset No. 8 Drew Foster. The win for Colbray avenged a 14-0 loss to Foster at the Cyclone Open earlier this year.

No. 5 Willie Miklus was the aggressor in a heated match at 197 pounds. The Altoona, Iowa native downed Tyrell Gordon 5-0 to pull the Cyclones within 19-13 of Northern Iowa.

Sports betting bills ready for committee action in Iowa House and Senate

Sports

February 22nd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa House and Senate are considering two similar plans to legalize sports betting after hearing from several competing interests that want a stake in the potential new industry. Both would allow casinos to host in-person and mobile sports betting. However, the House version does not require a trip to the casino to sign up for placing bets with a smart phone app. Republican Representative Bobby Kaufmann of Wilton is leading the House effort to craft a plan to legalize sports betting.  “If you’re going to bring this out of the shadows, you want to bring this out of the shadows quicker,” Kaufmann says.

Kaufmann’s bill also sets a state tax rate on the casinos’ sports betting revenue. It would be six-and-three-quarters percent under the House version. Senators working on the issue say they’ll decide on the tax rate later. Senator Tony Bisignano of Des Moines, a Democrat, says that’s the main component of any plan. “What does the state make out of this? I mean that’s the incentive for the state,” he says. “The state has no other reason to care about sports betting other than revenue.”

The sports betting bills in the legislature also make it legal for Iowans to claim huge fantasy sports prizes from sites like DraftKings and FanDuel. Iowans can participate in on-line fantasy sports now, but they can’t claim more than 200-dollars in prizes in a 24-hour period.

February 22nd, 2019 by Ric Hanson

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — With the game on the line, Indiana’s Bendu Yeaney made huge plays on both ends of the court to lift the Hoosiers to the upset of Iowa. The sophomore guard scored with 3.8 seconds left and blocked a potential game-winning shot in Indiana’ 75-73 upset of No. 10 Iowa on Thursday night. With the game tied at 73, she drove for go-ahead basket. Tania Davis tried a 3 at the buzzer that Yeaney blocked to snap a four-game skid for the Hoosiers (18-10, 7-9 Big Ten). Iowa (21-6, 12-4) fell a game behind conference leader Maryland with two games left in the regular season. The victory was Indiana coach Teri Moren’s 100th at Indiana and 299th overall.

Megan Gufaston, the nation’s leading scorer, finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Iowa. Kathleen Doyle added 17 points and nine assists. The Hawkeyes appeared to be in the Big Ten driver’s seat when they had a 16-point lead and Maryland trailed Minnesota by double figures. However, the Terrapins came back for a big 71-69 win and Iowa now trails by a game in the Big Ten standings with two games remaining. The Hawkeyes are on the road again when they visit Nebraska on Monday for their final Big Ten road game of the season.
