The Atlantic Boys swept past Glenwood and the Rams returned the favor in girls tennis on Tuesday night.

The Trojan boys tennis team was a 9-0 winner over the Rams with Nile Petersen leading the way in the number one singles and teaming up with Jesse Reid to win top doubles pairing as well.

The Trojan girls fell 9-0 to Glenwood. Brooklyn Taylor won the top singles match over Hana Holtz and teamed up with Brielle Smith to win the top doubles match as well.

The OA-BCIG girls track team won the Spartan Invitational hosted by West Monona on Tuesday night. The Falcons scored 142 points and Logan-Magnolia scored 111 in second.

Logan-Magnolia’s Courtney Sporrer won the 400M and 1500M. Kylie Morrison won the 800M. Taylor Sporrer won the 3000M.

The Harlan boys track team won their home Ken Carstens Inviational on Tuesday night. The Cyclones scored 124 points to edge by Atlantic by 3.

The Cyclones only won the 4x400M but had a number of events with 2-3 finishers to rack up the points to win the meet.

Atlantic had 6 event wins on the night. Tyler Moen won the 200M. Zade Niklasen won the 400M and Chase Mullenix took the 800M title. Craig Alan Becker won the 1600M and Jalen Petersen won the 3200M. The Trojans also won the Sprint Medley.

The Glenwood boys golf team took first and Atlantic came in second at the Shenandoah Tournament on Tuesday. Glenwood shot 315 and Atlantic 319 at American Legion Golf Course. The Trojans top golfer on the day was Matt Gearheart in 3rd place with a 78.

Atlantic Head Coach Ed Den Beste: “Temps were good in Shenandoah today. Wind was a little strong and the greens were fast. We had several that took many holes to get used to greens. Matt had a great front. Shot one over. Then started the back with a triple and went on the boggy run until the last few holes with pars. Cyle was two over on the front and also went on a boggy run on the back. Had 7 holes that he couldn’t get thing going. Braden played pretty consistent today. Good round for him. Drey started rough with a triple and a double two holes later. However, he rallied and had a good score of 83. Tate was playing pretty well. Hole 7 he lost a ball and lost some focus. He parred the next but then took an 8 on 9 and a triple on 10. Still worked to finish in the 90s. Garrett had never see the course so he was learning as he played. Had some good holes and parred his last which was good to see. it is one of the toughest holes on the course.”

NEW YORK — University of Iowa senior Megan Gustafson has been invited to attend the 2019 WNBA Draft on Wednesday, April 10, the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) announced the invitational-only guest list Tuesday.

ESPN2 will cover the first round live at the Nike NYC Headquarters at 6 p.m. (CT), while the second and third rounds will air on ESPNU. The app will also stream live on the ESPN app.

Joining Gustafson are the draft are Kristine Anigwe (Cal), Kalani Brown (Baylor), Napheesa Collier (UConn), Sophie Cunningham (Missouri), Asia Durr (Louisville), Teaira McCowan (Mississippi State), Arike Ogunbowale (Notre Dame), Katie Lou Samuelson (UConn), Alanna Smith (Stanford), Han Xu (China), and Jackie Young (Notre Dame).

Twelve Hawkeyes have been selected in the WNBA Draft in program history. Gustafson looks to become the first Hawkeye to be drafted since Sam Logic was picked by the Atlanta Dream as the 10th overall pick in 2015.

Gustafson, the first consensus national player of the year in Big Ten history, ended her career as the most decorated Hawkeye in program history. The Port Wing, Wisconsin, native owns 16 Iowa records, including career marks for points (2,804) and rebounds (1,460).

In 2018-19, Gustafson became just the fourth Division I female student-athlete and the only post player to eclipse 1,000 points in a single season. She is the only women’s player in Division I history to average 27.8 or more points, 13.3 or more rebounds, and shoot 69.6 percent or better from the field. Her 33 double-doubles during her senior campaign are an NCAA Record. Gustafson’s 88 career double-doubles rank fourth all-time, her 65.7 career field goal percentage ranks fifth nationally, and her 1,459 career rebounds ranks 14th. The field goal percentage and rebounds are also Big Ten Conference records.

Boyer Valley took the win the Rolling Valley Conference girls golf meet on Monday in Carroll. CAM’s Sammi Jahde was medalist with a 45. Jacey Anthofer of Exira-EHK was runner-up with a 46.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Ryan Hunter has tackled the halls of government. As part of the NFL Players’ Association’s Externship program, the pre-law graduate from Bowling Green State University worked for Republican Sen. Josh Hawley, of Missouri. He focused in part on helping improve rural internet access.

The Players’ Association promotes the externship program online as the “premier opportunity for NFL players to gain valuable experience with top organizations across the country.” Participants work in both political and business settings for several weeks in February and March.

Hunter entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Chiefs in 2018. He didn’t appear for the team last season.

(Radio Iowa) — Senate Majority Leader Jack Whitver says based on his own experience, he has no concerns about Iowa college athletes being influenced to change a game’s outcome if sports betting is legalized in Iowa. Whitver, a Republican from Ankeny, was a wide receiver for the Iowa State Cyclones from 1999 through 2003.

“I remember we sat down with compliance (staff in the athletic department) and they would show us videos of what happens to you if you try to shave points or try to throw a game and you get sent to prison,” Whitver says. “They really scared us into saying: ‘This isn’t even something that you should consider.'”

Bills eligible for debate in the Iowa House AND in the Senate where Whitver is a leader would let the 19 state-licensed casinos collect bets on professional and collegiate sporting events through a smart phone app. The casinos “sports betting” operations then would be subject to a state tax of less than seven percent.

“If you go to an Iowa State or an Iowa game on a Saturday, there are bookies literally in the parking lot taking bets on their text or taking bets from the people at a tailgate on these games,” Whitver says. “And so the question is should we just ignore it and pretend that it doesn’t happen or should we legalize it and regulate it, so that if there are concerns and there is corruption happening, we have a better chance to find that and make sure that it doesn’t happen.”

The bills that have emerged at the statehouse would prevent bets on individual performances in college games happening IN IOWA. That means you wouldn’t be able to bet on how many touchdowns a quarterback might throw or how many free throws a basketball player might miss. Whitver says he has no problem banning those kind of wagers — called “prop bets” — if it helps get the 26 votes he needs in the senate to make sports betting legal in Iowa.

“Illegal sports betting is happening every single day in the state of Iowa,” Whitver says. “All you have to do is pop on the radio this afternoon and listen to talk radio and they’re talking about point spreads and betting lines and all that.”

Whitver made his comments during a weekend appearance on Iowa Public Television’s “Iowa Press” program.
