Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Marcell Ozuna drove in four runs and Dexter Fowler had three RBIs, leading the St. Louis Cardinals to a 17-4 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Paul Goldschmidt reached base four times and had three hits and two RBIs for the Cardinals, who managed just one run in their previous 21 innings but bounced back with 16 hits and recorded a season high in runs. The 17-run output is the most for the Cardinals since an 18-5 win over the Chicago Cubs on July 20, 2018. Gregory Polanco homered for Pittsburgh.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The XFL’s first games on Feb. 8, 2020, will come more than two years after Vince McMahon announced in January 2018 that he was bringing the league back. Besides time, McMahon has given the league plenty of resources. McMahon has invested nearly $400 million into the XFL with three sales of his shares in World Wrestling Entertainment the past 16 months. He made his biggest investment on March 27, selling 3.2 million shares that were worth approximately $272 million.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Big East Conference has reached a multi-year agreement with CBS Sports to televise its men’s college basketball games through the 2024-25 season. Games will be shown on CBS and on the CBS Sports Network. Members of the conference are Villanova, Providence, St. John’s, Georgetown, Seton Hall, Creighton, Marquette, DePaul, Butler and Xavier.

Atlantic girls track buying in to team to find success

Sports

May 9th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic girls track team has found some excitement and success this season by buying into the team concept. Head Coach Matt Mullenix is in his first season at the helm of the team and he said the girls have really come together as the season has moved along. The girls have settled into their roles and understand that individuals can have just as much success if the team is put first.

Haley Rasmussen and Taylor McCreedy have been two of the major leaders for the Trojans and Coach Mullenix said they have grown into their leadership roles.

Coach Mullenix said he is happy to see the girls build on the strong tradition that Atlantic girls track has, and he says they’ve done it with their actions and not just words.

Atlantic will compete in the State Qualifying Meet at Carroll on Friday night. The top 2 finishers in each event qualify for the State Meet along with the next 8 fastest times statewide. A full list of qualifiers is expected to be compiled by Saturday afternoon. The State Meet is May 16th-18th at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Atlantic boys track on a roll heading into State Qualifying Meet

The Atlantic boys track team is hitting on all cylinders heading into the State Qualifying Meet that will now be contested on Friday night in Carroll. The Trojans have picked up the pace in recent weeks with wins at their home meet and their second straight Hawkeye Ten Conference Championship. Atlantic Head Coach Jordan Mullen said he knew his team was on the right track after bouncing back from a lackluster meet in Council Bluffs a couple weeks ago.

The Trojans are in the midst of a very successful run as a program and Coach Mullen said that’s due to the trust and commitment to the team they have developed.

The Trojans contended for a State Championship right up to the last event of the State Meet last year and Coach Mullen knows they can be right there again if they focus on themselves.

The State Qualifying Meet in Carroll on Friday night is set to get underway at 4:00pm. The top two finishers in each event qualify for the State Meet along with the next 8 fastest times recorded across the state. A full list of qualifiers is anticipated to be compiled by Saturday afternoon.
