Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) — Jordan Yamamoto pitched seven innings to win his major league debut, and Garrett Cooper hit a grand slam as the Miami Marlins broke a six-game losing streak by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 9-0. Yamamoto, acquired last year in the Christian Yelich trade, allowed three hits and two walks and threw 95 pitches. The rookie also earned an RBI with a squeeze bunt.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Brandon Dixon broke an eighth-inning tie with a sacrifice fly that sent the Detroit Tigers past the Kansas City Royals 3-2. Miguel Cabrera also had a sacrifice fly for the Tigers, and Ronny Rodriguez hit an RBI double. The teams now head to Omaha, Nebraska, to play the first Major League Baseball game in that state Thursday night as a prelude to the College World Series, which begins Saturday in the same ballpark.

BOSTON (AP) — Ryan O’Reilly of the St. Louis Blues has been named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the most valuable player of the playoffs. The gritty forward lifted the trophy on the ice moments after the Blues beat Boston 4-1 in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

Exira-EHK Board rejects WIC invite

Sports

June 12th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Members of the Exira-EHK School District’s Board of Education, Tuesday evening, rejected an offer to join the Western Iowa Conference for athletics and academics. School officials say low student enrollment and participation numbers were behind the decision to decline the invitation, with a majority of the Varsity coaches against making the change.

Superintendent Trevor Miller expressed at the meeting that there would be some academic benefit to the affiliation with instructional coaches and teacher collaboration. This is a little more difficult in the Rolling Valley Conference since some districts have part-time sharing agreements with other districts.

Ultimately the difference in school size was the driving factor in the unanimous decision to stay in the Rolling Valley. Current BEDS numbers show that Exira-EHK would by a decent amount be the smallest school in the WIC if they were to make a change, and they would be nearly 2.5x smaller than the largest district Underwood.

The Western Iowa Conference has gauged interest from a couple of other schools in the Rolling Valley as well. Both conferences expect some potential changes down the road. Ar-We-Va has a current partial sharing agreement with Carroll and Paton-Churdan students spend time at Greene County. Charter Oak-Ute recently exited the conference after joining up with Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto. The Western Iowa Conference is currently at 9 teams after losing Griswold to the Corner Conference last year. Treynor has expressed interest for a long time in joining the Hawkeye Ten. More adjustments are surely to come with time.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

MIAMI (AP) — Rookie Dakota Hudson allowed one run in a career-high seven innings, and the St. Louis Cardinals handed the Miami Marlins their sixth consecutive defeat, 7-1. Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina returned after missing 11 games because of a strained right thumb and went 2 for 5 with a single and double. Marcell Ozuna punctuated the victory with a ninth-inning homer, his 18th.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jorge Soler had the tying RBI double in the eighth inning and Cheslor Cuthbert followed with the go-ahead run-scoring single to lead the Kansas City Royals to a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Adalberto Mondesi started the rally with his third hit of the game, a double with one out off Daniel Stumpf, and scored on Soler’s ensuing hit off Victor Alcantara. Terrance Gore ran for Soler and stole third before scoring on Cuthbert’s single between three fielders in right field.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Defensive tackle Chris Jones chose to skip the beginning of the Kansas City Chiefs’ mandatory three-day minicamp, the latest step in the growing discord over his looming contract situation. Jones is hoping to parlay the finest season of his career into a massive payday as he enters the final year of his rookie contract. But with negotiations seemingly going nowhere, the affable 24-year-old defensive tackle opted against participating in the Chiefs’ voluntary workouts.

MIAMI (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina has been activated from the 10-day injured list, and the team optioned rookie catcher Andrew Knizner to Triple-A Memphis. The moves were made before the Cardinals’ game at Miami. Molina missed 11 games after being sidelined May 29 with a strained right thumb tendon.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Former Michigan wide receiver Oliver Martin has transferred to Iowa, his hometown school. The Hawkeyes have announced that Martin, a former four-star recruit from Iowa City West High who originally spurned them for the Wolverines, has joined the program as a redshirt sophomore. The 6-foot-1 Martin caught 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown last season for Michigan before entering the transfer portal.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The St. Louis Blues were mired in last place six months ago, but a bond was forged during a midseason stretch of 70 days without consecutive home games. Season-defining moments soon began piling up and the team advanced all the way to the Stanley Cup Final against Boston. Players point to a pivotal moment in the playoffs, too: Coach Craig Berube told them to forget about a missed call that went against them during a loss to San Jose. It helped steel their resolve to face the Bruins.
BOSTON (AP) — From January to March, the St. Louis Blues didn’t play more than one consecutive home game at a time. It was a lot like a 70-day road trip. It forced a team with a half-dozen new faces to come together. All of that has helped St. Louis to a 9-3 record on the road in the playoffs. They feel comfortable playing in Boston in Game 7 on Wednesday night, with the winner getting the Stanley Cup.
BOSTON (AP) — If the Boston Bruins seemed like something of an afterthought at times this season, maybe it was understandable. They played in the Atlantic Division shadow of the Tampa Bay Lightning, which won the President’s Trophy. But only three teams won more games this season than Boston. The Bruins advanced all the way to Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final against St. Louis.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Former Michigan wide receiver Oliver Martin has transferred to Iowa, his hometown school. The Hawkeyes announced on Tuesday that Martin, a former four-star recruit from Iowa City West High who originally spurned them for the Wolverines, has joined the program as a redshirt sophomore.

The 6-foot-1 Martin caught 11 passes for 125 yards and a touchdown last season for Michigan before entering the transfer portal. Martin will sit out next season unless he applies to the NCAA for a waiver that would grant him immediate eligibility.

Water level to drop at Meadow Lake

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

June 11th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

GREENFIELD, Iowa – Officials with the Iowa DNR report the water level of Meadow Lake near Greenfield in Adair County will be lowered 3 feet starting June 14, to help improve the size of bluegills in the lake. The water will be released slowly over the next two weeks to avoid any downstream impacts.

A water level draw-down is a common fisheries management technique used to improve the size of panfish.  Meadow Lake has an abundance of 6-inch bluegills that lack the quality anglers are looking for.

“Crowding the fish into a smaller area makes them more susceptible to predation by largemouth bass and reduces the number of small bluegills,” said Bryan Hayes, fisheries management biologist. The reduced number will improve growth in the coming year. “A draw-down in 2016 had this effect and we had good bluegill fishing in 2017 and 2018,” Hayes noted.

The draw-down is expected to have minimal effect on public access to Meadow Lake.  The boat ramp will be usable and the lake will remain open during the draw-down.  Meadow Lake will be allowed to refill starting in September.

Meadow Lake is a 34 acre lake in the middle of the 317 acre Meadow Lake Fish and Wildlife Area located in the north central part of Adair County.  It has a maximum depth of 20 feet and an average depth of 7.3 feet.
