Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) — Lucas Duda came through with Kansas City’s first pinch-hit homer of the season to break a tie in the eighth inning, and the Royals held on for a 5-4 victory over the first-place Atlanta Braves. Alex Gordon also homered for the Royals and drove in two runs. Starters Dallas Keuchel of Atlanta and Danny Duffy of the Royals both went six strong innings with double-digit strikeouts but didn’t factor in the decision.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered for the second straight night, José Martínez added his 10th home run of the season and Dakota Hudson rebounded from a shaky start to lead the St. Louis Cardinals past the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3. Goldschmidt delivered a two-run blast to the left-field seats in the third inning off Chris Archer (3-7). Martínez put St. Louis in front with a solo shot leading off the fifth and Hudson and two relievers shut the Pirates down after spotting Pittsburgh an early 3-0 lead.

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs expect wide receiver Tyreek Hill to report to training camp with the rest of the veterans this week, though whether star defensive tackle Chris Jones joins him remains to be seen. Chiefs coach Andy Reid says the organization has been in touch with Jones’ representatives, but he’s unsure where things stand in their contract discussions. Jones is entering the final year of his rookie deal and is seeking a lucrative, long-term extension.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — New Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg is preparing his team for a nine-day trip to Italy starting Aug. 3. The Cornhuskers will play four games against club and professional teams. Hoiberg is following the plan he used to turn around Iowa State earlier this decade. He’s brought in five transfers from four-year schools and two from junior colleges in addition to four scholarship freshmen.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Reigning world 100-meter champion Justin Gatlin is 37 and still feels like he can keep up with the new kids in the starting blocks. He does feel his age from time to time when he thinks about all the familiar faces that are no longer competing. His biggest rival Usain Bolt is no longer there to challenge him. Arriving on the scene is a slew of 20-somethings who present another challenge for Gatlin.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas defensive lineman Malcolm Lee has been arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The Kansas City Star reports that logs from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department show that Lee was released on bond shortly after his Saturday morning arrest near the football stadium.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — The Atlanta Falcons and former Kansas City Chiefs defensive end Allen Bailey have agreed to a two-year, $10.5 million contract. The 30-year-old Bailey had a career-high six sacks for the Chiefs in 2018. Bailey, from McIntosh County (Georgia) High School, was not with the team for Tuesday’s practice. Bailey played college football at Miami and spent eight years with Kansas City.

UNDATED (AP) _ The Chicago Cubs’ lead in the NL Central is down to two games over St. Louis, with Milwaukee still 2 ½ games back. Joe Panik hit a go-ahead double with two outs in a three-run eighth inning that gave the San Francisco Giants a 5-4 comeback win over the Cubs. Paul Goldschmidt’s grand slam in the 10th inning pushed the Cardinals past Pittsburgh, 6-5, and Eugenio Suarez launched his second two-run homer of the night with two out in the ninth to give Cincinnati a 6-5 win over the Brewers.

UNDATED (AP) _ The Minnesota Twins were able to maintain their three-game lead over Cleveland in the American League Central by taking the opener of their series with the New York Yankees. The Twins pulled off a triple play in the first inning before Mitch Garver hit two of Minnesota’s five home runs in an 8-6 downing of the Yankees. The Indians won for the eighth time in nine games as Mike Clevenger gave up three runs and five hits over seven innings of a 7-3 win at Toronto.

ST. PETERBURG, Fla. (AP) _ J.D. Martinez, Andrew Benitendi and Sam Travis homered while the Red Sox exploded for seven runs in the third inning of a 9-4 rout of the Rays. The game was scoreless until Rafael Devers lined a two-run double and scored on a three-run blast by Martinez. Eduardo Rodriguez was outstanding over seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits as Boston pulled within one game of Tampa Bay for second place in the AL East.

HOUSTON (AP) _ Aledmys Diaz, Yordan Alvarez and Yuli Gurriel homered as the Astros jumped on Homer Bailey for early runs in an 11-1 thrashing of the Athletics. Cole is 11-5 after winning his seventh consecutive decision, yielding two hits and one run while striking out 11 in Houston’s sixth straight win. The AL West-leading Astros improved to 8-1 versus Oakland this season and moved 7 ½ games ahead of the second-place A’s.

MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Milwaukee Brewers manager Craig Counsell says pitcher Brandon Woodruff could be out up to six weeks with a left oblique strain suffered during Sunday’s win at Arizona. He underwent an MRI and was placed on the 10-day injured list Monday. Woodruff allowed four runs Sunday before leaving two pitches into the bottom of the fourth. The All-Star right-hander has been the most effective starter for the Brewers, going 11-3 with a 3.75 ERA.
