PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt’s power streak helped lift the St. Louis Cardinals into a share of the NL Central lead for the first time since early May. St. Louis won the eighth time in nine games and at 55-47 tied the idle Chicago Cubs for first. St. Louis last held the lead before play on May 7.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Jose Ramirez hit a go-ahead homer in the 14th inning and the Cleveland Indians held on to beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 in a game that lasted just shy of five hours and finished after midnight. Jake Bauers singled home Jason Kipnis later in the 14th to add an insurance run _ and Cleveland needed it. Francisco Lindor homered on the first pitch of the night for the Indians, who remained two games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Allyson Felix advanced out of the first-round of the 400 meters at US championships in her first race in 13 months and as a mom. It wasn’t easy. The six-time Olympic gold medalist breathed a sigh of relief when her time held up.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Hurdler Rai Benjamin used to compete for Antigua. He switched to the US and will take the track at nationals in the 400-meter hurdles. He’s hoping to be wearing the red, white and blue at worlds this fall.

CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. men’s soccer team will play Uruguay in an exhibition at St. Louis’ Busch Stadium on Sept. 10, four days after the Americans face Mexico at East Rutherford, New Jersey. Both games are on FIFA dates, allowing the U.S. to call in Europe-based players for the match. PITTSBURGH (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt homered in his career-high fourth straight game, powering the St. Louis Cardinals over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 on Thursday for a four-game sweep.

Goldschmidt drove a changeup from Joe Musgrove (7-9) for his 22nd home run, a solo shot that put St. Louis ahead 3-1 in the fourth. He has one homer in each of his past five games against Pittsburgh.

Kolten Wong homered later in the fourth and Dexter Fowler hit a two-run drive for a 6-1 margin in the fifth as the Cardinals won for the 11th time in 14 games since the All-Star break, including their last five. The Pirates have lost 11 of 13.

Miles Mikolas (7-10) gave up three runs and five hits in six innings.

Musgrove matched his season high by giving up six runs — five earned — and seven hits in five innings.

José Martinez hit an RBI single in the first and scored on Paul DeJong’s sacrifice fly. Bryan Reynolds’s sacrifice fly cut the Cardinals’ lead to 2-1 in the third.

Iowa man survives second heart attack on the same golf course

News, Sports

July 25th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – A northwest Iowa man is alive today, thanks to fast action from his golfing partners. Sixty-eight-year-old Dick Beaulieu, of Hinton, was golfing in Hinton on July 2nd and had just hit a shot onto the green when he collapsed on the course. Dean Burger explains what happened next. “Threw my clubs down and ran up the hill. The other gentleman did the same thing and there was no hesitation,” Burger said. “It sounds funny, but we just went on automatic…and we got ‘er done.”

Beaulieu had a slight pulse when the two golfers got to him, but then he stopped breathing. “At that point, we put him on his back and started doing CPR. I started first,” Burger said. “The other gentlemen started second. We just alternated.”  It took about 10 minutes for E-M-Ts to arrive. Beaulieu’s memory of what happened “is pretty vague.”

“I hit a shot on number 3 — probably the best shot I’d hit all year. The next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital,” Beaulieu says. “They said I coded. As we got to the end of the lane, they stopped and shocked me, got me going again. This is all what I’ve been told.”  Beaulieu, who is the former mayor of Hinton, had suffered a minor heart attack 19 years ago — AT THE SAME GOLF COURSE.

“Cardiologist said I was a good candidate for a pacemaker, a defibrilator and like most people I put it off and put it off — and if your cardiologist tells you need one, you really ought to get one from I’ve found out the hard way,” Beaulieu says. “…Poor old heart decided it was time to quit. Thank goodness a couple of guys were there who knew what to do.” Beaulieu got a pacemaker on Friday, July 5th and was released from the hospital the next day.
