Racetrack sports betting kiosk glitch idles some machines

News, Sports

September 24th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

ALTOONA, Iowa (AP) — Sports betting kiosks at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino in Altoona have been shut down while a vendor figures out why they came on in the middle of the night when they were supposed to have been turned off.

Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission Administrator Brian Ohorilko says surveillance video shows no one at the machines when they powered up overnight recently but William Hill, the company providing sports betting at the casino, has chosen to keep them off until the glitch can be resolved.

Sports bets can still be placed through casino personnel at betting windows and on a mobile app, but the self-service kiosks at the casino sports book area are off for now. The casino’s sports betting area closes at midnight except on Friday and Saturday when it closes at 1 a.m.

Ohorilko says sports betting in Iowa, which began Aug. 15, has gone smoothly otherwise. Prairie Meadows reports total amount wagered in August was $3.4 million, the highest of the 13 casinos now taking bets. Sports wagers for all the casinos last month totaled $8.5 million.

District stops volunteer chaplain from praying with team

WEST DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The West Des Moines Community School District has stopped a high school football team’s volunteer chaplain from praying with players before and after games.

West Des Moines Superintendent Lisa Remy said Monday the district received written concerns from parents that the prayers were a violation of the First Amendment.

The district then asked the self-described chaplain, Chris Barr, to stop working with the Valley High School team while the concerns are reviewed by the district’s legal counsel.

The Des Moines Register reports that Barr did not pray with players Friday night when Valley played Waukee.

Barr doesn’t work for the district. He works with West Des Moines Community Schools Fellowship of Christian Athletes, an independent organization that works with Christian students enrolled in West Des Moines schools.

Goldschmidt hits HR in Arizona return, Cards top D-backs 9-7

Sports

September 24th, 2019 by admin

PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks made it obvious they appreciated Paul Goldschmidt in his return to the desert, honoring him with a tribute video before the game and multiple ovations throughout the evening.

Clearly, everyone thought this night was a pretty big deal.

Except for the man being honored. The stoic first baseman still had work to do.

Goldschmidt smacked a two-run homer in his Chase Field reunion, Yadier Molina also had a two-run shot, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Diamondbacks 9-7 Monday night for their sixth straight win.

“It’s all what you make of it, and for me this was just another game,” Goldschmidt said. “I’m appreciative of all the fans coming out, cheering me on, the standing ovation. But I just didn’t want to make too big a deal of it.”

For Goldschmidt, the real importance of the game was that his team won again.

The Cardinals have a 3 1/2-game lead over the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central. St. Louis has five games remaining in the regular season while Milwaukee has six.

The Diamondbacks — who have hung around the fringes of the NL wild-card race for months — were officially eliminated from postseason contention.

“We left some money on the table throughout the course of the season and those are the things that we are going to have to address and tighten up a little bit,” Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said.

UP NEXT

Cardinals: St. Louis will start RHP Jack Flaherty (10-8, 2.96 ERA). He gave up just one run over eight innings in a win over the Cubs on Friday. He threw a season-high 118 pitches.

Diamondbacks: Arizona will start RHP Mike Leake (12-11, 4.38). He’s 3-1 with a 2.48 ERA over his last five starts.

Goldschmidt hits 2-run homer in return to Chase Field

PHOENIX (AP) — Paul Goldschmidt has hit a two-run homer in his return to Chase Field as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.

The 32-year-old Goldschmidt spent the first eight seasons of his career with the Arizona Diamondbacks and was a fan favorite during his tenure. He hit .297 with 209 homers and 710 RBIs during his eight years in the desert, helping the franchise make the playoffs in 2011 and 2017.

The Diamondbacks honored Goldschmidt with a tribute video before the game that highlighted some of his best moments. He also got a big ovation before his first at-bat in the first inning, when he drew a walk.

In the third, he drove a changeup from Alex Young over the right-center field fence for his 32nd homer of the year. It was also his 100th career homer at Chase Field, which is a stadium record.

Goldschmidt’s homer gave the Cardinals a 4-1 lead.

He was traded during the offseason for catcher Carson Kelly, pitcher Luke Weaver, infielder Andy Young and a draft pick.
