IRVING, Texas – Iowa State women’s basketball center Kristin Scott was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, while incoming sophomore Ashley Joens was named honorable mention preseason All-Big 12, the league announced Wednesday.

Scott appeared in all 35 games for the Cyclones and was ISU’s second-leading scorer, averaging 12.8 points, 7.1 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game. Her contributions in 2018-19 earned the Kasson, Minn. native second-team All-Big 12 honors.

Scott also positioned herself as Iowa State’s best shooter, leading the team in field-goal percentage, knocking down 56.1 percent from the floor. She also led the Cyclones in 3-point percentage, going 38.1 percent from downtown and connecting on 45 triples.

Last season against Oklahoma State, she went a school-record 11-of-11 for a career-high 31 points and 12 rebounds in ISU’s win at Oklahoma State. She became just the third player and first power five player to score 31 points, while remaining perfect from the floor and earned Big 12 Player of the Week honors for her efforts.

Joens on the other hand, started in all 35 games last season for the Cyclones, averaging 11.7 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. She was named to the Big 12’s All-Freshman Team for her efforts.

The Iowa City, Iowa native is also a two-time gold medalist with USA Basketball. She helped USA Basketball capture gold this summer at the FIBA U19 Women’s World Cup.

The Cyclones will officially kick off the 2019-20 season on Thursday, Nov. 7 against Southern at 6:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.

Dodger 7-3 Wed. night to secure the NLCS.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs could get star wide receiver Tyreek Hill back for Sunday’s game against Houston, though that may be just about the end of the positive news on the injury front. The Chiefs placed defensive tackle Xavier Williams on injured reserve after he sustained a high ankle sprain in last weekend’s 19-13 loss to the Colts. He was among a handful of crucial players that went down during the game, many of whom could still be out this week.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Kansas coach Bill Self bristled at the suggestion Wednesday that he was sending a message to the NCAA following its investigation into his basketball program with his actions in a recent promotional video. Self wore an Adidas jersey and a golden chain in the video. The Jayhawks are facing allegations of wrongdoing from the NCAA and have been tied to an FBI investigation into Adidas, the school’s longtime sponsor.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — In an era when many college athletes want to speed up their careers in hopes of going pro, Iowa’s Jack Nunge took an unusual step back last season. Nunge redshirted as a sophomore with the Hawkeyes, and they hope that will help him blossom into an impact player this winter. The 6-foot-11 Nunge, who started 14 games as a freshman in 2017-18, stepped aside last season in part because Iowa looked to balance out its frontcourt depth.

ATLANTA (AP) — With a stunning outburst their first time up, the St. Louis Cardinals scored 10 runs for the biggest opening inning in postseason history and dealt the Atlanta Braves another playoff heartbreak with a 13-1 rout in decisive Game 5 of the NL Division Series on Wednesday.

Before many fans had reached their seats, the Cardinals were already booking their plans for the NL Championship Series, where they will face either the Los Angeles Dodgers or the Washington Nationals in a best-of-seven set beginning Friday. Those teams were meeting in their own Game 5 at Dodger Stadium. It will be St. Louis’ first NLCS trip since 2014.

For the Braves, it might take a while to get over this debacle. After pitching seven scoreless innings in a Game 2 win, Mike Foltynewicz retired only one hitter before getting yanked. First baseman Freddie Freeman made a crucial error that might have limited the damage. The Cardinals scored their final run of the inning on a strikeout — a wild pitch in the dirt that skipped away from catcher Brian McCann.

It was Atlanta’s 10th straight postseason round loss since its last victory 18 long years ago, tying the ignominious mark set by the Chicago Cubs between 1908 and 2003. No team had ever scored 10-plus runs in the very first inning of a postseason game. It is the first time the Braves franchise has allowed that many first-inning runs in any game since the Boston Braves did it July 2, 1925 against the Brooklyn Robins.
CHOP CHOPPED
The Braves did not distribute their traditional red foam tomahawks to fans following criticism by St. Louis pitcher Ryan Helsley. The foam cutouts are used when Braves fans perform their Tomahawk Chop chant in games. The Braves said in a statement the change is “out of respect for the concerns” expressed by Helsley, a member of the Cherokee Nation who said he finds the chant insulting.

Members of the Atlantic Athletic Facilities’ Steering Committee were recognized Wednesday evening, during a meeting of the Atlantic School Board. Atlantic School District Superintendent Steve Barber said “About a year ago we started a Steering Committee. We had a lot of conversations about a pre-existing plan that was put together a couple of years beforehand, and they’ve been on-board since that time.” Committee members Kip Harris, Nicholas Hunt, Bob Sweeney and Jennifer Saathoff, were presented with plaques by School Board President Josh McLaren.

A bond issue for Athletic Facilities Improvement was passed by the voters on April 2nd. Barber said “A lot of work and effort took place from these four folks during that time period, in regards to not only making some decisions about what the current plans were, but getting a lot of stakeholders together and getting their opinion and feedback throughout that process…communicating with the [School] Board, meeting of their expectations and resolutions,” and he says they “Worked hard in communicating not only with a public hearing, but also with District Staff and getting the word out to the voters.”

Barber said “They went above and beyond. Spent many hours getting it to the finish line.” Currently, Little League is removing the Aglime from the baseball and softball fields, along with the batting cages. In fact, on Monday, Oct. 14th, the Rochon Corporation will be starting on the Baseball/Softball fields.

Next Summer, Atlantic’s home Softball games will be played at the Little League Complex (across from KJAN). Athletic Director Andy Mitchell is working with area schools to determine where our home Baseball games will be played. Griswold has offered to work the schedule out, CAM and Avoca are looking into it as well, according to Steve Barber. As for the Trojan Bowl, Brad Devore will be taking down the white fence, prior to the start of the project. A pre-construction meeting is set for Oct. 17th, where details will be further discussed and decisions made moving forward. Barber said that will be the official “Kick-off” to the construction season.

Work on the Trojan Bowl will begin once the last game is played on the football field.

Kuemper Catholic was among the teams competing at the South Central Calhoun Cross Country Meet on Tuesday night.

In the boys race the Knights finished in 2nd place. Tyler Putney led the way with a 2nd place finish. Jack Hagen and Michael Pottebaum were fifth and seventh, respectively, for the Knights. Kuemper Catholic scored 73 points to finish second behind Ogden’s 38 points.

The Knights were 11th in the girls team race, with Manson Northwest Webster winning it. Keziah Janssen was the top runner for the Knights in 33rd place.

The Leon Fox Cross Country Invitational was held on Tuesday night in Perry. Creston and Denison had teams competing in the meet.

The St. Louis Cardinals hope to continue that trend when they face the Braves in decisive Game 5 of the NL Division Series. The pitching matchup will be a rematch of Game 2, when Atlanta’s Mike Foltynewicz outdueled Jack Flaherty of the Cardinals for a 3-0 victory.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State has been searching all season for a primary ball carrier. The Cyclones might have found their guy in quarterback Brock Purdy. He gave Iowa State the boost it was looking for in its ground game in a blowout win over TCU. Purdy ran for 102 yards and two touchdowns in leading Iowa State past the Horned Frogs 49-24. Next up is a trip to play West Virginia on Saturday.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The PGA Tour Champions has announced a new tournament for St. Louis, the first for the 50-and-older circuit in the area since 2001. The Ascension Charity Classic will be played in 2020 the first weekend of October at Norwood Hills Country Club.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s offense surrendered eight sacks in last week’s 10-3 loss at Michigan. Penn State is next for the No. 17 Hawkeyes on Saturday night. The Nittany Lions lead the nation in sacks. The Hawkeyes know the blueprint is there for Penn State and everyone else. They are focused on addressing the problems in practice so they don’t have a repeat against Penn State.

UNDATED (AP) — The XFL has released season-ticket prices and the draft process for its eight teams. League President Jeffrey Pollack says one of the primary goals is providing fans with an experience that is affordable. Nearly three-quarters of season ticket prices for the eight teams are $50 or less per game. Next week’s draft will be in five phases and will take place over two days.

UNDATED (AP) — It’s been a tough month for major league relief pitchers, with bullpens often getting tagged in the playoffs. Carlos Martinez, Mark Melancon, Sean Doolittle and Ryan Pressly are among the pitchers who’ve been hit hard. Overall, relievers have a 5.85 ERA so far in the AL Division Series and NLDS.
