Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

DENVER (AP) — Reigning MVP Patrick Mahomes injured his right knee in the Kansas City Chiefs’ 30-6 victory over the Denver Broncos. Mahomes was hurt on a quarterback sneak early in the second quarter. Backup Matt Moore threw a 57-yard touchdown pass to Tyreek Hill and the Chiefs rallied around their fallen superstar to snap a two-game losing streak.

UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State, Wisconsin and Penn State give the Big Ten three top-10 teams at the halfway point of the season. All three have their sights set on ending the conference’s two-year drought in the College Football Playoff. The biggest games in the conference are still to be played. Top AP midseason awards go to Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Chase Long and Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor.

UNDATED (AP) — Fifth-ranked Oklahoma and number 18 Baylor are the only remaining unbeaten teams in the Big 12 at the midpoint of the season. Coach Matt Rhule has Baylor on an eight-game winning streak, which is the longest in the league. Oklahoma’s Jalen Hurts, Oklahoma State’s Chuba Hubbard and Texas Tech’s Jordyn Brooks are among players having standout seasons.

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Kansas has been picked as the favorite to win the Big 12 men’s basketball title. The Jayhawk’s NCAA record run of winning the conference 14 years in a row ended last season. They were picked by the league’s coaches to finish ahead of Baylor and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders made it to the NCAA championship game last season before losing to Virginia in overtime. Texas Tech and Kansas State shared the regular season title. Iowa State won the Big 12 postseason tournament with a win over Kansas.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Thatcher Demko stopped 34 shots in regulation and overtime and Josh Leivo scored the lone shootout goal as the Vancouver Canucks beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 on Thursday. Bo Horvat, J.T. Miller and Micheal Ferland scored for the Canucks, who won for the first time on the road in three tries this season. Vladimir Tarasenko, Alex Pietrangelo and Robby Fabbri scored for the defending Stanley Cup champions, who have dropped three straight.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Clint Bowyer has reached an agreement with Stewart-Haas Racing to return to the No. 14 Ford next season. Bowyer has been with SHR for three of his 15 seasons in the Cup Series. Bowyer is 11th in the 12-driver playoff field going into Sunday’s race at Kansas Speedway. The bottom four drivers in the standings will be eliminated after Kansas.

AHSTW hosts Southwest Valley in match-up of improving teams on KJAN

Sports

October 17th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

The AHSTW Vikings (4-3) football team plays host to the Southwest Valley Timberwolves (3-4) on Friday night and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. It’s a match-up of teams that have improved throughout the season with a lot of youth on the field. Southwest Valley head Coach Anthony Donahoo said his team is treating this week like the start of a new season. The Timberwolves have nearly everyone coming back for next season so they are looking to build some momentum that can carry over to next year. Coach Donahoo said this meeting with the Vikings should be a good one.

The Timberwolves have been able to run the ball pretty effectively throughout the season with quarterback Brendan Knapp leading the option attack. Coach Donahoo said the big issue has been finishing drives.

AHSTW Head Coach GG Harris feels like his team has continued to improve throughout the season. There was a lot of turnover for the Vikings from last year’s State Runner-Up team and Coach Harris thinks everyone is settling well into their roles as they gain experience. He expects the Timberwolves to be a solid test.

Quarterback Blake Holst has thrown for 901 yards and 6 touchdowns this year for the Vikings, and Denver Pauley has led the ground attack with 602 yards and 6 scores. Jackson Woltmann has been another strong ball carrier for AHSTW with 508 yards and 4 touchdowns. Coach Harris likes the balance they have created on that side of the ball but he thinks the defense may be key this week. He is excited about the recent improvement on defense from his squad and knows they will need to play sound this week to stop that rushing attack.

The Vikings and Timberwolves will kickoff at 7:00pm in Avoca on Friday night. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on KJAN with the Dvorak Tire and Service pregame starting at 6:30pm. You can catch our pick ’em show “Who’s Gonna Win?” at 6:00pm and stay tuned after the game for the “Iowa High School Scoreboard Show” from 10:00pm-11:30pm with all the scores from around the state. Catch the game on-air, online, or on the web app. You can also watch the game on KJANTV.
