Iowa visits Northwestern today

Sports

October 26th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa/Learfield Sports) — Iowa looks to snap a three game losing skid today (Saturday), in the series with a visit to Northwestern. The Wildcats are 1-5 but still have a solid defense.

That’s Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz. The Hawks run game showed some signs of life a week ago in a win over Purdue.

Northwestern has dominated the Hawkeyes physically the last few years.

Pre-game coverage begins at 9-a.m. on KJAN, with the kick-off at 11.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

AMES, Iowa (AP) — For most teams, losing nearly 70 percent of their scoring and over 60 percent of their rebounding would mean that a rebuilding season was imminent. At Iowa State, it’s just the latest chance to give a new batch of players a crack at the Big 12 title. The Cyclones (23-12 in 2018-18) saw four key contributors that averaged a combined 53.1 points, 18.8 rebounds and 10.4 assists per game move on after last season

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have ruled quarterback Patrick Mahomes out for Sunday night’s showdown with the Green Bay Packers because of his dislocated right kneecap. Mahomes, who hurt the knee last Thursday night in Denver, was limited participant in practice all week. The Chiefs decided to give the reigning league MVP at least one game off as he recovers from an injury that can sometimes sideline a player for several months.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The prime-time showdown between the Packers and Chiefs was supposed to be a marquee matchup between quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. But when the Kansas City quarterback dislocated his kneecap against Denver, those prospects went out the window. Now, it’s merely an intriguing test of division leaders.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Kentucky coach Mark Stoops should expect a hard-fought game against Missouri based on the teams’ recent history. The Wildcats have won the last four meetings against the Tigers, with the past two decided by six points or less. The Wildcats look to extend their streak, but Stoops expects Mizzou to make every yard and point hard to come by.

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — There has been more attention on Kansas basketball over the past six months in court rooms than on basketball courts. Coach Bill Self and the rest of the No. 3 Jayhawks are ready for that to change. The season is on the horizon. The focus can get back on the game, and a season in which expectations are soaring for the Jayhawks. The season opener is Nov. 5 against fourth-ranked Duke in New York City.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Bruce Weber walked into the Kansas State practice gym a year ago knowing precisely what to expect, thanks in part to five returning starters and a bevy of experience sitting on his bench. But after three key seniors departed from a team that tied for the Big 12 title last season, Weber is still uncertain what to expect when the season opens Nov. 5 against North Dakota State.

Atlantic senior running back Tyler Moen

The Atlantic Trojans rolled past the Red Oak Tigers 54-0 on Friday night to wrap up the 2019 season. The Trojans worked a successful ground game early with Tyler Moen and built a 41-0 lead by halftime. The running clock rule was in place for the second half and the game melted away quickly.

Tyler Moen finished another stellar night with 320 yards on 25 carries with 5 rushing touchdowns. The first 4 scores of the game came from Moen. He finishes the season with 1,909 yards on the ground with 20 rushing touchdowns. Moen was already the single season rushing leader in Atlantic history before the game started, passing Derek Lane’s 1992 season mark of 1,293 yards.

The other three scores on the night came from a Garrett McLaren 18 yard touchdown pass to Collin Mullenix, a 5-yard run by Corey Parrott, and a 1 yard plunge from Ayden Brown.

The Trojan defense had a very solid outing as well, holding the Tigers to just 84 total yards of offense and 3 turnovers.

Atlantic finishes the season with a 4-5 record overall and a 3-2 mark in Class 2A District 9. Red Oak finishes the year 0-9.

Pheasant numbers look good for opening day

Ag/Outdoor, News, Sports

October 25th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) — The man who tracks pheasant numbers in the state is expecting a good season when hunters take to the fields for opening day Saturday. D-N-R wildlife biologist Todd Bogenschutz says the roadside survey in August usually gives him a good idea of what to expect. He says the counts were down a little bit statewide but for the most part most were about the same. Bogenschutz says last year saw the best harvest in a decade and that sets things up for a good fall hunt. Not all areas of the state are equal. “South-central and south-east Iowa, the counts were down by 50 percent — so I think hunters in that part of the state are going to see lower bird numbers,” according to Bogenschutz. “But the rest of the state, the counts came in more or less unchanged, or down just slightly.”

There will be a lot of standing corn and beans this weekend and Bogenschutz says that could make it tougher to find birds. He says the crops provide a big hiding place for the pheasants and the more crops the more the birds concentrate. Bogenschutz says the people who get out are going to get some birds. He says the conditions will change as the harvest progresses. “Birds will figure out where the refuges are — but as soon as those fields are harvested — they are going to be available again,” He says.

Bogenschutz suggests you make a second trip into areas where the crops were not out of the fields this weekend. “I’d encourage hunters to go this weekend, it’s the opener, and you’ll shoot a bunch of birds. don’t overlook maybe three or four weeks into the season — because you may find birds that haven’t been been hunted yet once the crops start truly coming out,” Bogenschutz says. Bogenschutz expects hunters to take around 200-thousand pheasants. The August survey is nearly identical to 2008 when Iowa hunters harvested 400-thousand roosters, but Bogenschutz says hunter numbers are lower.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The prospects of Kansas City slowing down the Green Bay Packers, fresh off their blowout win over Oakland, probably feel a whole lot better after the way the Chiefs played last week. Their defense, so maligned for years under coordinator Bob Sutton and not a whole lot better under replacement Steve Spagnuolo, finally clicked in what turned into a 30-6 rout of the Broncos. Now the task is to slow down Aaron Rodgers and the Packers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Sunday night showdown between the Packers and Chiefs was supposed to be a marquee matchup between quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes. But when the Kansas City quarterback dislocated his kneecap against Denver, those prospects dimmed. Still, regardless of whether Mahomes makes a miraculous recovery in time to play, the game shapes up as an intriguing test of division leaders.

UNDATED (AP) — No. 15 Texas and TCU could both use a win at the midpoint of their conference schedules. The Longhorns want to get back to another Big 12 title game. The 3-3 Horned Frogs want to avoid falling under .500. Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard is averaging 181 yards rushing per game. The Cowboys play Iowa State, which hasn’t allowed only 111 yards rushing per game. There has not been a 100-yard rusher against Iowa State.

UNDATED (AP) — The game between No. 13 Wisconsin and No. 3 Ohio State lost some of its luster when the Badgers were upset by Illinois last week. The Badgers still stack up as the best opponent Ohio State has faced. Five of the last six meetings have been decided by seven points or less. Michigan’s front seven will face a challenge against Notre Dame’s offensive line. Illinois heads to Purdue looking for back-to-back wins over Big Ten opponents for the first time since 2014.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) — There is no five-star basketball prospect for Missouri to hang its hopes on this season. Instead, coach Cuonzo Martin might have his most complete team since arriving in Columbia, one that figures to improve significantly on its 5-13 record in the SEC last season. Missouri opens the season Nov. 6 against Incarnate Word.
