Atlantic girls grab win over Kuemper Catholic

Sports

December 17th, 2019 by admin

The Atlantic girls basketball team grabbed a victory over the Kuemper Catholic Knights 56-55 in a hard fought game on Tuesday night. The Trojans led for much of the game but Kuemper Catholic kept doing enough to make the Trojans work hard for the win. Atlantic led 15-7 at the end of the first and 26-21 at halftime. It was just a two point lead for the Trojans at 38-36 heading into the 4th quarter, but the Trojans grabbed control with an 11-0 run to start that final session. Kuemper clawed their way back within 4 late, and a last second three by Mallory Badding set the final 1 point margin.

Atlantic was led by 18 points from Haley Rasmussen and 15 from McKenzie Waters. Lauren Nicholas finished with 8 points on the night and she said the Trojans have played with more confidence in their last few victories.

Taylor McCreedy dropped in 7 points for Atlantic, despite sitting the second quarter with two early fouls. She said the game was a good learning experience for herself and the team.

Trojan Head Coach Dan Vargason said the offense is improving for Atlantic and the role players have made the difference.

Atlantic improves to 4-3 on the season and will play a make-up game against Denison-Schleswig on Thursday night.

Kuemper Catholic was led by 21 points from Mallory Badding. The Knights fall to 1-6 and are now off for the holiday break.

Sports

December 17th, 2019 by Ric Hanson

Fans at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego will be asked to do the “Iowa Wave” at the end of the first quarter of the game between No. 19 Iowa and No. 22 USC on Dec. 27. The wave will be directed at patients in a children’s hospital in Iowa City as well as representatives from two children’s hospitals in Southern California who will be at the game.

The wave will replicate what has become a game-day salute at Iowa home games to patients and family members at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Kansas faces the challenge of holding onto its new No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 men’s college basketball poll when it visits No. 18 Villanova this week. The Jayhawks are the fifth different team to reach No. 1 this season. Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke and Louisville were the others. None of them won more than two games before stumbling after claiming the top spot. This week’s AP Top 25 national schedule also includes a marquee matchup between No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Kentucky in Las Vegas on Saturday.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs claimed veteran pass rusher Terrell Suggs off waivers on Monday, filling a massive hole at defensive end after losing Alex Okafor to a torn pectoral muscle a day earlier against the Denver Broncos. The 37-year-old Suggs spent the first 16 years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens before spending most of this past season with the Arizona Cardinals. He had 5 1/2 sacks for the Cardinals before he was waived last week, driving the seven-time Pro Bowl pick’s total to 138 sacks for his career.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Travis Kelce has never cared much about individual statistics, even though the Kansas City Chiefs tight end has been putting up some eye-popping numbers ever since he arrived in the NFL seven years ago. All he cares about is wins. And with another big performance against Denver on Sunday, the Chiefs hit the 10-win mark with two games left in the regular season. Now the trick for Kelce is to keep producing with the No. 2 seed in the AFC playoffs still in play, and with Super Bowl hopes once the postseason finally begins.

Bohannon to have hip surgery, miss remainder of season

Sports

December 16th, 2019 by admin

IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa senior guard Jordan Bohannon will undergo season-ending hip surgery (left) Thursday at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics. Recovery from this procedure is typically 6-9 months.

“I could not have more respect for Jordan and the way in which he has fought to get back on the court for this team,” said head basketball coach Fran McCaffery. “Ultimately, I want what is best for Jordan, knowing that he will work even harder following Thursday’s procedure.”

“It has been an incredibly difficult last six-to-nine months dealing with what I’ve had to go through,” said Bohannon. “The unwavering support from Hawkeye nation, team, coaches, friends and family has meant the world to me. I’m looking forward to finally being 100 percent and will be doing everything I can to help this team out from the sidelines the rest of the season.”

Bohannon had the same procedure successfully performed on his right hip this past May and played in 10 games this season. During the course of the last couple months, pain developed in his left hip that ultimately resulted in the decision for additional surgery. Bohannon (6-foot-1, 185 pounds) played in 10 games, averaging 8.8 points and 3.3 assists per game.

Sports

December 16th, 2019 by admin

The CAM boys basketball team got things going in the 2nd Half and pulled away from Southwest Valley for a 54-36 win on Monday night in Anita. It was slow going for both teams early and the game was tied at just 18 apiece at halftime. The Cougars started to find some more consistent offense in the 2nd half and grabbed at 40-26 lead by the end of the third.

The Cougars were led by 11 points from Ben Tibken and 10 from Jacob Holste. All of Holste’s points came in the 2nd half. Nate Hensley was just outside of double figures with 9 points. The Cougars stay unbeaten on the young season and improved to 5-0. They finish the pre-holiday schedule at home against Glidden-Ralston on Tuesday.

CAM girls fend off late rally from Southwest Valley to improve to 5-1

Sports

December 16th, 2019 by admin

The CAM girls basketball team used some hot outside shooting to build a lead and held off a late rally from Southwest Valley for a 69-64 win on Monday night. The Cougars jumped out to an early 18-3 lead but saw the Timberwolves close the gap to 6 by halftime. CAM pushed the lead out again in the third quarter, leading 55-40 at the end of the period. Southwest Valley slowly chipped away and Rylee Jacobs got hot late to get the Timberwolves as close as 1 in the waning moments. Jacobs hit a long 2, followed by two straight 3’s in a three possession stretch. Zoey Baylor got fouled with CAM up 65-64. She calmly stepped up and knocked down both free throws to push the lead back to 3. Molly Venteicher came up with a big rebound on the Timberwolves next possession and she nailed two free throws to seal the win.

Sammi Jahde led the way with a brilliant shooting night, sinking 6 threes in the game and finishing with 29 points. After the game Jahde said it was just one of those nights where teammates were finding her open.

Zoey Baylor finished the game with 21 points for CAM. Head Coach Joe Wollum said it was great to see his team come through in a tight late-game situation.

The Cougars improve to 5-1 on the season and will close out the pre-holiday break portion of their schedule at home Tuesday night against Glidden-Ralston. Coach Wollum said they are in great shape heading into the break.

Southwest Valley was led by 17 points from Jentry Schaffer and 16 from Maggie Haer. The Timberwolves fall to 2-4 and will host Lenox on Tuesday night.
