For the second Monday night in a row the Harlan Cyclones boys basketball team picked up a win over the Atlantic Trojans. This time the Trojans played much tougher but the Cyclones pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 57-40.

Harlan was up 29-12 at the half but Atlantic found some offense in the third quarter. Dayton Templeton scored 10 of his 15 points in the period and the Trojans got as close as 38-32. Harlan then finished the quarter on a 6-0 run and got the first hoop of the fourth to take back control.

Connor Bruck had a strong night for the Cyclones with 19 points. He went 9-11 at the free throw line in the second half to help seal the Cyclone win. Michael Heithoff added 13 as Harlan improved to 15-5 on the season. They play host to Carroll on Thursday night to wrap up the regular season.

Atlantic falls to 8-12 on the season and they will finish the regular season schedule at Denison on Thursday.

The Trojans and Cyclones will meet again next Monday night in the Class 3A Substate 8 Semifinals. That game will be played at Glenwood and will be the second game of the night at 8:00 p.m. Glenwood will face Greene County in the first game at 6:30 p.m. that night. We’ll have coverage of the Trojans and Cyclones on KJAN once again.

The Atlantic boys basketball team hosts the Harlan Cyclones in a regular season game tonight and we’ll have coverage on KJAN. The game is a make-up contest from a weather postponement back on January 17th.

The Cyclones won the first meeting of the season a week ago in convincing fashion 71-41. This will mark the second of three straight Monday night match-ups between the two teams. The Trojans and Cyclones will meet again next week in Glenwood for a Class 3A Substate 8 Quarterfinal round game. That game was moved to an 8:00 p.m. start as of today.

The playoffs begin tonight for some Class 1A and 2A boys basketball teams. In Class 1A pigtail games in the bracket are being contested tonight before the District Quarterfinals on Thursday. In Class 2A District Quarterfinals are being played tonight with some teams getting a bye into the District Semifinals on Thursday.

FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State (15-9, 7-6 Big 12) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end at the hands of TCU (18-5, 9-3 Big 12) 82-72 Sunday afternoon at Schollmaier Arena.

Iowa State was led in defeat by Adriana Camber, who finished with a season-best 18 points on 5-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. Kristin Scott chipped in with her seventh-straight game in double figures with 16 points, while Ashley Joens notched her third double-double in four games with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

Despite making 14 3-pointers, their second-highest output of the season, turnovers were once again a struggle for ISU. The Cyclones committed 16 turnovers, which TCU turned into 22 points. The Frogs were also able to establish themselves in the paint, winning points in the paint 42-to-16 over Iowa State.

(Radio Iowa) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has a series of town hall meetings scheduled to discuss possible changes to hunting rules and regulations and other topics. D-N-R spokesman, Mick Klemesrud, says the first meeting is scheduled for Wednesday in Sioux City. “We have 18 meetings set up across the state. And these are public meetings where our local staff will come in and provide a recap of the hunting and trapping seasons,” Klemesrud says. “They’ll give population updates, and they’ll talk about hunter participation, trapper participation and just what to expect and what we’re looking at as potential rule changes.”

He says one rule change involves the waterfowl hunting zones. “We are going to increase the size of the Missouri River Zone to actually go all the way to the Mississippi across southern Iowa to create kind of a new central zone, shift the southern border of the north zone up a little bit. And then modify the season dates accordingly,” according to Klemesrud. “So the southern zone will have later season dates, the central zone will have the old southern zone season dates, and the north zone will probably stay fairly close to what it has been.”

There could be some other rule changes as well. “We are also looking at expanding and increasing the number of otters that trappers can harvest. And there’s some other deer quotas, and things like that,” he says.  Klemesrud says they expect to have a good turnout. “Hunters like to talk about hunting and they like to come to these. They’ve got a like-minded audience — they’re hearing things that they enjoy — and hunter participation is definitely a part of these meetings,” Klemesrud says.

Comments collected from the public meetings will be considered along with other related comments received by the Iowa D-N-R prior to proposing changes to hunting rules and regulations. Proposed rules will be presented to the Natural Resource Commission during a regular public meeting for consideration and additional public comment.

Iowa trailed by eight points with 5:25 remaining but finished the game on an 11-0 run. Oturu scored 15 points and Marcus Carr added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Minnesota.

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas was scratched from his second bullpen session of the spring because of a flexor tendon issue. Manager Mike Shildt said the Cardinals hope to have a more concrete time frame for Mikolas return to the mound in a day or two. Mikolas entered this spring as one of four pitchers expected to be in the Cardinals rotation, joining Jack Flaherty, Dakota Hudson and Adam Wainwright.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Anthony Murphy posted career highs scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds and Drake beat Evansville 85-80. Evansville led 40-34 at halftime before Drake started the second half with a 13-0 run and never trailed again. Sam Cunliffe’s 3-pointer with a minute to go brought the Purple Aces within 72-76 but the Bulldogs made all eight of their foul shots in the last 46 seconds. Cunliffe led Evansville with 25 points.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — Dexter Dennis had a career-high 21 points as Wichita State beat Tulane 82-57. Tyson Etienne added 20 points for the Shockers. Dennis hit 8 of 10 shots, including 4 of 6 on 3-pointers. Etienne shot 7 of 9, including 6 of 8 from the arc. The Shockers made 13 of 24 3-point tries for 54%, better than the 48% they shot overall and nearly matching the 55% they shot at the free-throw line (11 of 20). Christion Thompson led the Green Wave on Sunday with 16 points and seven rebounds.
