The Atlantic Trojans softball team took a doubleheader sweep from Denison-Schleswig on their home-opening night on Tuesday. Atlantic took the first game 12-0 in 4 innings of play and 12-2 in 5 innings in the nightcap.

Olivia Engler pitched a gem in the opener with 8 strikeouts and allowed just 1 hit in the short contest. The Trojans also had  a good start at the plate. The Trojans led off the game with base hits from Alyssa Derby and Madison Botos and trotted across three runs in the frame. They would go on to bring home 3 more in the second and 5 in the third. Kennedy Goergen drove in the deciding run with an RBI single in the fourth.

Goergen got the start in the circle for Atlantic in the second game and had three strikeouts, allowing 8 hits. She finished strong to end the game in the 5th with two strikeouts and a forced ground out to end the game. Olivia Engler went 3-4 with 2 doubles and drove in 2 runs. Lauren Nicholas had two triples in the contest, the first driving in two runs in the 2nd.

Atlantic improves to 3-0 on the young season and will host Clarinda and Earlham on Thursday and Friday to end the week.

The Atlantic softball team opens up their home slate today at the Atlantic Little League Complex. The Trojans will welcome in Denison-Schleswig for a varsity doubleheader and we’ll have coverage on KJAN.

The Trojans opened up the season Monday night with a road win over Lewis Central 10-2. The Lady Monarchs are 0-1 after an opening 5-2 loss to Kuemper Catholic.

The first game of the double-dip is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the second game to follow at about 7:30 p.m. Join Chris Park and Jarod McKee for the coverage on AM 1220, FM 101.1, and online at kjan.com. Coverage will start at about 5:15 p.m.

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa has reached a separation agreement with Executive Director of Football and Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Chris Doyle, effective June 15, 2020.

 In addition, the University of Iowa Office of General Counsel has engaged the Kansas City law firm of Husch Blackwell to conduct an independent review of issues and allegations relating to racial disparities within the football program.

As previously announced, Raimond Braithwaite will continue as interim director of the football strength and conditioning program.

Athletics Director Gary Barta was set to meet with the media at a press conference at 1:00 p.m. today. The agreement calls for Doyle to receive fifteen months of base salary (Approximately 1.1 million) in two installments in August 2020 and January 2021. Doyle will also receive health and dental benefits for a 15 month time frame or until he obtains those benefits elsewhere.

Iowa City has been home to our family for 21 years. I am grateful Iowa football provided an opportunity to work with incredible players, coaches, and support staff.  I have worked diligently to make a positive impact on the lives of student-athletes, support them as they speak out, and look forward to continued growth. I am confident that my record and character will be confirmed in the course of the independent review. The University and I have reached an agreement and it is time to move on from Iowa football. My family and I are looking forward to the next chapter.

In cooperation with the independent review, Iowa will refrain from comment on this matter during the review process.

A schedule change has occurred for the CAM baseball and softball teams today. The openers for both teams was supposed to be at Woodbine but those games have been cancelled. The CAM baseball team was able to schedule a non-conference game at Exira-EHK tonight. The softball team will not be playing tonight.

According to the Woodbine School District Facebook page, on June 12, the Woodbine Community School District had been notified that a student athlete had tested positive for COVID-19. The Harrison County Public Health Department is working with the family and the District pursuant to IDPH and CDC guidance.

The CAM at Exira-EHK baseball contest will be varsity first at 5:30 p.m. followed by JV.
