CAM starts and finishes strong in District Semifinal win over Nodaway Valley

The CAM Cougars advanced the the Class 1A District 13 Final with an 11-4 win over the Nodaway Valley Wolverines on Tuesday night in Anita. CAM book-ended the ballgame with stellar offensive innnings. The Cougars scored 5 runs in the 1st and the 6th to secure the win.

Kolby Nelson got the offense cooking with a double and Lane Spieker drove him in with a double of his own to get the Cougars on the board. 3 of the next four batters would drive in runs as well, with Ben Tibken reaching on a walk in between. Cade Ticknor brought in 2 on a sac fly that brought in the 4th and 5th runs. After the game Tibken said it was good to jump on the Wolverines early.

The game was quiet in the middle with only one hit from the 2nd-4th. Nodaway Valley then got on the board with 3 runs in the 5th. Evan Forcht brought in two with a single before getting picked off trying for second base to end the inning. CAM answered with one run in the 5th before piling up 5 on 4 hits in the 6th. After an easy win in the first round CAM Head Coach Dan Daugherty said it wasn’t difficult to get his team focused because they knew they would get a test from the Wolverines.

Lane Spieker got the win on the mound going 5 innings, giving up three runs on 5 hits with 5 strikeouts. Cade Ticknor finished the game and had 2 strikeouts of his own. CAM improves to 14-2 on the season and move on to the District Final on Saturday. Coach Daugherty said they have talked about defending home field.

CAM will face Bedford on Saturday in Anita for the District title and we’ll have that game on KJAN with pregame at 6:45 p.m. and first-pitch at 7:00 p.m. Tibken is part of a Senior class that has won over 20 games the past four seasons and a state tournament appearance. He said they just need to keep it up to advance on.

Nodaway Valley played a fairly solid game outside of those two big innings for the Cougars but their season ends with an 8-9 record.

Most JUCO fall sports moved to spring

Sports

July 14th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The nation’s junior colleges are moving nearly all of their fall sports to spring, including the sport of football. The decision was made by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Thom (Tom) McDonald is commissioner of the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference.

Iowa Western, Ellsworth and Iowa Central are the three schools in the state that offer football.

McDonald says the sports of cross country and half marathon will remain in the fall.

The start of the season for sports like basketball and wrestling have been moved to January.

Scott Strohmeier is the football coach at national power Iowa Western and feels the move to the spring is the best option.

Strohmeier says being allowed fall practice and three scrimmages will help players who hope to be recruited by four year schools.

Strohmeier says mid-year transfers mean a lot of his players won’t be available when the season begins March 25th.

Strohmeier says while he would prefer to play in the fall this gives them something to look forward to.

Cardinals quietly ramping up for shortened big league season

Sports

July 14th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The St. Louis Cardinals have enjoyed a relatively quiet ramp-up to next week’s opener of their abbreviated season. Their core players have continued to test negative for COVID-19 during their workouts at Busch Stadium ahead of next week’s opener to their abbreviated season. They haven’t had any injuries pop up that could dramatically alter their plans for the starting rotation or lineup. And the few questions they did have during the spring, such as how they would cast their deep platoon of outfielders and how they would stack their bullpen, have been largely answered.

AP source: Chiefs, Jones agree to 4-year, $85M extension

Sports

July 14th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed with defensive tackle Chris Jones on a four-year, $85 million contract extension that includes $60 million in guarantees, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Tuesday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the signing. The Chiefs and representatives for Jones have been working on a contract extension ever since last year, when they remained far apart on terms and the Pro Bowl selection skipped the entirety of the offseason program. Jones was back in time for training camp and helped the Chiefs win their first Super Bowl in 50 years in February.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Hard-throwing St. Louis Cardinals reliever Jordan Hicks has opted out of playing this season, citing pre-existing health concerns. The 23-year-old Hicks was diagnosed in high school as having Type 1 diabetes. Hicks, who routinely throws over 100 mph, is recovering from Tommy John surgery on June 26, 2019. The right-hander’s availability for this season was uncertain. Hicks had been taking part in workouts at Busch Stadium, leading up to the Cardinals’ opener on July 24 at home against Pittsburgh.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Royals manager Mike Matheny will get to see his old ballclub sooner than he expected now that Kansas City is scheduled to play the St. Louis Cardinals in an exhibition game at Busch Stadium next week. The Royals also will play two games against the Houston Astros at Kauffman Stadium before opening their 60-game season July 24 against the Indians in Cleveland. Matheny is in his first season in charge of the Royals after taking over for the retired Ned Yost. He spent last year as a special assistant with the organization.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Now that the Washington Redskins have dropped their nickname, the spotlight has moved to other sports franchises under pressure to make changes amid a nationwide movement calling for racial justice. The NFL team said it is retiring its nickname, which had been in place since 1933. Several sponsors threatened to end partnerships if the team didn’t change. The Cleveland Indians seem to be the next pro team in line for change. They are in preliminary discussions about a new name. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Braves and the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks said they have no plans to change their names or logos.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Longtime basketball coach Craig Robinson has been hired as executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Robinson, the brother of former first lady Michelle Obama, has spent time in both the college and professional ranks. He will take over for Jim Haney, who has held the influential position for the past 29 years. Robinson has been the vice president of player development for the New York Knicks for the past three years. That job included the title of general manager of the G League’s Westchester Knicks.

CHICAGO (AP) — Alex Bregman and the Houston Astros visit the Los Angeles Dodgers on September 12th in one of the most intriguing dates on the shortened major league schedule. The New York Yankees visit the World Series champion Washington Nationals on opening day, and the St. Louis Cardinals take on the Chicago White Sox next month at the site in eastern Iowa where the movie “Field of Dreams” was filmed. The Astros will be closely watched this season after they were punished by Major League Baseball for their sign-stealing scheme in their run to the 2017 World Series title.
