Chiefs keep gambling by doling out another big-money deal

Sports

August 14th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs are gambling that big contracts paid out to quarterback Patrick Mahomes, tight end Travis Kelce and defensive tackle Chris Jones this offseason will work out. The first consideration is whether the salary cap will continue to grow over the next few years, allowing them to absorb their increasing salaries. The second is that players such as Kelce, who turns 31 in October, will continue to produce at a Pro Bowl level as they reach their mid-30s.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz on the possibility of spring football

Sports

August 14th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – With the fall season cancelled Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz turns his attention to a possible spring season. The Big Ten said it was a possibility this week when the fall season was cancelled.

Ferentz says one problem will be playing two seasons in a calendar year.

There is also the possibility many players with an eye on the NFL will skip a spring season.

Upper Iowa Football Season Cancelled

Sports

August 14th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Board of Directors has announced the cancellation of Fall Championships and have suspended all sports competition through December 31st. Upper Iowa is a member of the Conference. The NSIC had announced in late July it was pushing back the start of the football season to late September, and last week, the NCAA announced it was cancelling all Division II Fall Championships, including the football playoffs.

In a statement Thursday, Rick Hartzell, Vice President for Athletics, Upper Iowa University said:

“Today, we are sad, but hopeful. It pains us that our fall sport student-athletes won’t compete for a Northern Sun Conference Championship or earn a place on an All-Conference team this year. But we are hopeful that our fall sport coaches and student-athletes will use this year to sharpen both their academic and athletic skills. We understand that there are more questions than answers at this time, and it is not fair to those young women and men that have put in the hard work to be ready. All 24 of our sports have been affected by this pandemic over the last five months. It is imperative that our Peacocks come together and lift each other up to find the silver lining in a seemingly continuous storm cloud. We will work together with our University, our community, and our conference to get the answers and move toward a brighter tomorrow for Upper Iowa and Peacock athletics.”

The NSIC is a 16-team, 18-sport, NCAA Division II conference with institutions located in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs are 13-3 for the first time since 1907 following a 4-2 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. Yu Darvish struck out 11 and no-hit the Brewers until Justin Smoak led off the seventh inning with a home run. Kyle Schwarber hit a solo homer to help Chicago improve to 8-1 at home.

CHICAHO (AP) — The Cardinals’ series opener against the White Sox has been postponed to Saturday, giving the Redbirds an extra day to recover from a coronavirus outbreak. The Cards, who haven’t played since July 29 and were set to resume their season Friday night in Chicago.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts has joined Johnny Mize and Sammy Sosa as the only players to homer three times in six different games. Betts did it while going 4-for-4 with five RBIs in the Dodgers’ 11-2 pounding of the Padres. Corey Seager, AJ Pollock and Austin Barnes also went deep for Los Angeles.

KANSAS CITY (AP) – The Chiefs and star tight end Travis Kelce have agreed to a four-year, $57.25 million contract extension that will keep him with the Super Bowl champions through 2025. That’s according to a person familiar with the contract. The move to secure the two-time All-Pro tight end is the latest in a string of big-money deals negotiated by general manager Brett Veach to keep the core of the Chiefs intact this offseason.

UNDATED (AP) — Major college football will be the only championship decided by the NCAA, and the prospect of holding that still hangs in the balance. The NCAA has called off all fall championship events except for major college football because of the limited number of schools competing in sports such as men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball during the first semester. NCAA President Mark Emmert made the announcement in a video posted on Twitter, although it has been clear this was coming as conferences canceled fall sports seasons because of the coronavirus pandemic. Emmert said the NCAA would prioritize staging championships in winter and spring sports because those — including the NCAA basketball tournaments— were canceled when COVID-19 first spiked across the United States in March.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — It will be the Portland Trail Blazers against the Memphis Grizzlies in the NBA’s Western Conference play-in series. Damian Lillard dropped in 42 more points and had a crucial steal as the Blazers earned a do-or-die victory, 134-133 over the Nets. Jonas Valanciunas and Ja Morant each had triple-doubles to help the Grizzlies knock off Milwaukee, 119-106.

Atlantic Athletic facilities update

Sports

August 13th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The Atlantic School Board, Wednesday evening, received an update on the Athletic facilities improvement projects. Superintendent Steve Barber says “Our Trojan Bowl is finally looking like a football stadium.”

Concrete crews will pour the north curb separating the track and field. Once that’s done, they’ll move to the baseball/softball fields and begin working on the dugout footings. Once the concrete is poured, Barber said the mason contractor will begin erecting the dugouts.

Once the Press Box is finished at the factory, it will be hoisted to the top of the home bleachers. Barber said also, the field is about to final grade. Crews began laying rock for the foundations of the asphalt track, with the first layer set to be installed next week. He said also, the scoreboard and time clock poles have been installed. They’re still waiting on word on when the scoreboard will arrive.

Work has also been mostly completed on the concession stand. Earth moving material is scheduled to be moved up to the high school, beginning next week.
