AP source: Chiefs’ Breeland to miss 4 games to suspension

Sports

August 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs will be without starting cornerback Bashaud Breeland for the first four games of the season because of off-the-field issues earlier this year, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The person confirmed the league intends to suspend Breeland on the condition of anonymity because the announcement had not been made.

The news, which was first reported by ESPN.com, has long been assumed after Breeland was arrested in April on multiple charges that included resisting arrest, marijuana possession and driving without a license.

Iowa State Matt Campbell on the importance of depth

Sports

August 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa State coach Matt Campbell has been working to build depth and that may be needed this season. Injuries are always part of football but this season could see players out of action after a positive COVID-19 test.

Campbell says it will be up to the coaches to get the entire roster ready to play.

Campbell believes the depth has improved the past few years.

State is now offering Zoom course to learn to hunt, field dress & cook waterfowl

(Radio Iowa) – Schools at all levels have shifted courses online, so it shouldn’t be a big surprise that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources is now offering a virtual workshop to teach how to hunt, field dress and cook waterfowl. The Jamie Cook, a program coordinator for the D-N-R, says the course will target Iowans who have little to no waterfowl hunting experience — and they’ll make it work during the pandemic.

“We will take every measure to make camera angles really, really good and high index,” Cook says. “I field dressed a dove last night on my computer screen and had it to where it looked really good and did everything to accommodate as much as we could.” While these types of skills usually require hands-on training, Cook says they’re making the switch to using Zoom webinars with a panel of expert instructors for the two-part workshop series next month.

“Immediately following, probably within a week of the courses, we’re going to send them an email that’s going to have detailed information, it’s going to have recipes, it’s going to have a link to a PDF of the hunting regulations,” Cook says. “We’ll also send some video clips along to them that we’ve used over the years for these courses.” Ideally, Cook says they’ll invite the participants on a hunt during the upcoming season with experienced hunters from Delta Waterfowl.

People who take part in the free workshops will learn basic strategies for hunting waterfowl, things like proper equipment, where to hunt, safe shooting practices, decoys and calling, and how to field dress, clean and cook waterfowl. Cook says participants will have plenty of chances to ask questions. “Last night, with our Learn to Hunt Dove course, we had about 30 questions that came in. We were able to answer those both live and privately through the question-and-answer feature,” Cook says. “We have a lot of positive feedback from the participants.”

Course One will be held September 3rd and will cover waterfowl habitat and identification, hunting regulations and calling techniques. Course Two will be held September 10th and will cover hunting equipment, decoy spreads, cleaning and cooking. Participants can sign up for either or both courses.

Press Box install at the Trojan Bowl

Sports

August 19th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Atlantic) – A little less than three-years after the Atlantic School Board first pondered floating a $23-million dollar bond issue before the voters for long overdue athletic facility improvements, crews began to lower the Press Box onto home bleachers this (Wednesday) morning.

On April 2nd, 2019, voters approved a scaled-down, $9.5-million dollar bond issue for improvements to the Trojan Bowl, Baseball/Softball fields, and more. Later that same year the planning committee and School Board elected to install high grade synthetic turf at the Trojan Bowl instead of natural grass, which increased the engineer’s estimate at that time to $10.1-million. The Facilities Committee said they would solicit donors and find other ways to reach at least half the $600,000 increase, with the intent to raise the entire difference.

At last report, they had raised a good chunk of that amount through a matching grant, business and individual donations.

CHICAGO (AP) — Yu Darvish pitched six effective innings in his fourth straight win, leading the banged-up Chicago Cubs to a 6-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Darvish allowed one run and eight hits while improving to 4-0 with a 1.04 ERA since he struggled in his first start of the season July 25 against Milwaukee. St. Louis pushed across two runs in the eighth and had runners on the corners when pinch hitter Andrew Knizner looked at a called third strike from Rowan Wick, ending the inning. Wick then worked the ninth for his fourth save.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Reds and Royals were supposed to begin a two-game series in Kansas City on Tuesday night, but Major League Baseball decided to postpone the game to give Cincinnati more time for testing. Now, the clubs will play a doubleheader Wednesday with the first seven-inning game taking place at 4:05 p.m. CDT and the second about 30 minutes after the first game ends. Matt Harvey will start Game 2 for the Royals in his return to the mound after more than a year. He once pitched for the Mets against Kansas City in the 2015 World Series, but has struggled to regain his former All-Star form.

CHICAGO (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Dexter Fowler tried to do something nice for rookie teammate Max Schrock, and it turned into quite an adventure. Fowler went to get Schrock’s first home run ball Monday at Wrigley Field and then had to sprint back to the dugout when he nearly had to go into the game. Fowler and the Cardinals are ramping up again after their season was derailed by a coronavirus outbreak, leading to 18 confirmed cases in the organization. The team is in the midst of playing 53 games over 44 days, including 10 doubleheaders.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The No. 1 seeds were losers in their opening games of the NBA playoffs. Nikola Vucevic scored a playoff career-high 35 points and had 14 rebounds as the eighth-seed Orlando Magic downed the Milwaukee Bucks, 122-110. Damian Lillard continued his torrid scoring output by delivering a team-high 34 points in the Portland Trail Blazers’ 100-93 win over the Los Angeles Lakers.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Heat and Houston Rockets were winners in the opener of their respective NBA first-round series. Jimmy Butler scored 28 points and Goran Dragic (DRAH’-gihch) had 24 to lead the Miami Heat to a 113-101 victory over the Indiana Pacers. James Harden’s 37 points and 11 rebounds led the Rockets to a 123-108 win over the Thunder.

FRISCO, Texas (AP) — The Dallas Cowboys have released defensive tackle Gerald McCoy, a day after the newcomer sustained a season-ending leg injury. McCoy tore his right quadriceps muscle Monday while engaging defensive tackle Antwaun Woods during an individual drill. The injury waiver means the Cowboys pay only the $3 million signing bonus on the $18 million, three-year contract McCoy signed as a free agent during the offseason.

Iowa projects a loss of 100 million dollars

Sports

August 18th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – The loss of the football season will prove costly to the Iowa athletic department. Hawkeye Athletic Director Gary Barta says the loss of the football season will cost the department about $100-million in lost revenue, and leave the department with a budget deficit of between 60-and 75-million dollars. The Big 10 announced last week it was canceling the football season along with other fall sports, but left open the possibility of football in the Spring.

The department is offering a refund to football season ticket holders.

CHICAGO (AP) — David Bote hit a three-run homer in Chicago’s four-run sixth inning, and the Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 for a doubleheader split. With two outs and runners on the corners, Bote put Chicago ahead to stay with a massive drive to center field off Tyler Webb for his second career pinch-hit homer. Bote belted a game-ending grand slam for his first pinch-hit shot in a 4-3 win against Washington on Aug. 12, 2018.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Nelson Cruz continued his climb up the all-time leaderboard with two home runs and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-1. Devin Smeltzer (2-0) picked up the win in relief of opener Matt Wisler for Minnesota. Cruz tied Mark Teixeira for 55th on the all-time home run list. Rookie Kris Bubic (0-3) surrendered two runs on four hits and four walks in 4 1/3 innings for the Royals. Hunter Dozier homered in the ninth inning to end Minnesota’s shutout bid.

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Cincinnati Reds scheduled a flight to Kansas City early Tuesday for a two-game series against the Royals that was put in doubt after a Reds player tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend. Players, coaches and other organization members were retested over the weekend. The final two games of a series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Great American Ball Park were postponed. Monday was a scheduled day off. The Reds made travel plans for Kansas City and expected to start Luis Castillo in the series opener Tuesday night, assuming it’s played.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Taco Charlton has been a bust on two different teams. Tanoh Kpassagnon was considered the same for a while as he moved between linebacker and defensive end. Breeland Speaks is still trying to live up to expectations as a second-round pick after injuries scrapped his second season in the league. Yet those three could provide the depth that turns the Kansas City Chiefs defensive line into one of the best in the NFL this season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The National Association of Basketball Coaches is creating a coalition of players to provide feedback on a variety of issues in the latest example of student-athletes gaining a greater voice both on and off the court. NABC executive director Craig Robinson says the coalition will meet quarterly and address the organization’s board of directors and NCAA committees. The coalition also will provide coaches and other NABC members with their own experiences in professional and personal development opportunities.

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Ryan O’Reilly had two goals and an assist as the St. Louis Blues beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-1 to even in their first-round playoff series. Alex Pietrangelo also scored for the Blues and added an assist. Jake Allen made 22 saves. J.T. Miller scored for the Canucks, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 34 shots. Game 5 is Wednesday. Pietrangelo fired shot that hit Edler’s stick and went in with 4:13 to go in the middle period.
