Atlantic Volleyball excited to play; determined to win the close ones

Sports

August 26th, 2020 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic volleyball team is gearing up for the 2020 season with some higher expectations than the past. The Trojans are coming off a 6-36 campaign last year that included some steps forward and some close losses. Atlantic Head Coach Michelle Blake said they are just excited to get out on the court.

This team brings back a large senior class that will be counted on to lead the way. Haley Rasmussen is back and coming off a season with 580 assists and 31 blocks. Alyssa Derby returns after leading the team with 179 kills. Caroline Pellett also returns and was second on the squad last year with 122 kills. A number of other key contributors are back, along with a strong sophomore class that is expected to contribute. Coach Blake said the experience on the team is deep.

The Trojans were able to get off the schneid and get a conference match win last year against Creston but they came up just short in a number of other matches throughout the year. Coach Blake said the team has been vocal about changing that narrative this season.

The Trojans open up the season at the AHSTW tournament on Saturday. Listen to the full interview with Coach Blake on our Saturday Morning Coaches Show at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday.

Chiefs’ defense gets tough practice test: their own offense

Sports

August 26th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — During this most atypical of training camps, when a slow ramp-up replaced any preseason games, the Chiefs have found themselves going first-team offense against first-team defense quite a bit. The result? Defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo’s bunch are forced to get ready for the opener Sept. 10 against Houston while facing one of the most dynamic offenses in the NFL, which in turn is trying to shred the Chiefs defense as Patrick Mahomes and the rest of them are fine-tuning themselves.

Our partnerships include CAM with the CAM Cougar Channel, Exira-EHK with Spartan Media, and Griswold with GrizTigerVision. Student run broadcasts will be produced on these channels under the KJAN Video Network and we are excited to give the public an option to watch games online. We will be promoting the games available to you to watch on a weekly basis and you can visit each channel to see upcoming broadcasts and watch the archives.

Iowa seeking $75 million loan for athletics

Sports

August 24th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(A-P) Iowa’s athletic department is working to secure a $75 million loan to cushion the blow of losing a projected $100 million in revenue because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Athletic director Gary Barta said the Hawkeyes had built a strong financial foundation before the coronavirus forced cancellation of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament and led to the Big Ten’s postponement of football until after Jan. 1. Now the athletic department faces a $60-$75 million deficit.

Iowa announced initial budget reductions in July, and after the Big Ten pulled the plug on fall football earlier this month the Hawkeyes announced Friday they would drop men’s gymnastics, men’s tennis, and men’s and women’s swimming and diving.

Barta said there are no plans to eliminate other sports and figures it will take about 15 years for the athletic department to pay off the loan. He said he had a “guestimate” for how much money Iowa could bring in from post-Jan. 1 football, but he declined to disclose the figure.
