Audubon gets the wheels turning early in win over Exira-EHK

Ethan Klocke

Ethan Klocke scored on the first play from scrimmage and the Audubon Wheelers never looked back in a 55-0 win over Exira-EHK on Friday night. The Wheelers hit paydirt on their first seven possessions of the game and pulled away 49-0 by halftime. The second half melted away fast with a running clock in place.

Ethan Klocke busted off a 65-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game. He would later add a 49-yard touchdown reception from Gavin Smith and another 17-yard touchdown run toward the end of the first half. Ethan finished with 131 total yards, 82 of those on the ground. Joel Klocke had a big night as well with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Gavin Smith played well at quarterback for the Wheelers and scored on two touchdown runs and racked up 138 yards on the ground to go along with 65 passing yards.

The line of scrimmage was a big story of the game as well. The Wheelers had to replace three seniors that played both ways up front and the new wave of lineman played very well against the Spartans. Joey Schramm and Garrett Christensen got in the backfield a number of times on the night and reeked havoc on the Spartan offense.

Exira-EHK was led by 96 yards passing and 24 rushing from senior quarterback Tyler Petersen. The Spartans had a tough time getting anything consistent going on offense and only got deep into Wheeler territory once.

Audubon will move on to host Ar-We-Va next week. Exira-EHK travels to Woodbine next week.

Lute Olson, Hall of Fame coach, Arizona icon, dies at 85

Sports

By JOHN MARSHALL AP Basketball Writer
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Lute Olson, the Hall of Fame coach who turned Arizona into a college basketball powerhouse, has died. He was 85. Olson’s family said he died Thursday evening. The cause of death wasn’t given. Olson spent 24 seasons at Arizona, revitalizing a fan base in the desert while transforming a program that had been to the NCAA Tournament just three times in 79 years before he was hired in 1983. Olson first took the Wildcats to the NCAA Tournament during his second season in Tucson to start a string of 25 straight appearances. The Wildcats won a national championship under Olson in 1997 with a team led by Mike Bibby, Jason Terry and Miles Simon. Olson was Head Coach at Iowa for nine seasons and lead the Hawkeyes to the Final Four in 1980.

Audubon set to host Exira-EHK to kick of 2020 football season

Sports

August 27th, 2020 by admin

The defending State Runner-Up Audubon Wheelers will open up the 2020 season hosting nearby foe Exira-EHK on Friday night at Chis Jones Field. The Wheelers come in ranked #3 in the opening Radio Iowa poll in 8-Man. Audubon brings back a strong core from last year’s team, but some great players graduated as well. Wheelers Head Coach Sean Birks said one of the biggest question marks is who steps up at the line of scrimmage.

The skill positions are much less of a question mark on the other hand. Top passer Gavin Smith returns after tossing 14 touchdown and 846 yards. Ethan Klocke, Joel Klocke, and Braden Wessel form a strong trio of rushers and receivers that accounted for 21 scores last season. Exira-EHK Head Coach Tom Petersen said they will be a tough group to slow down.

Exira-EHK will have a team with a similar makeup as their last, a mix of experience and youth. Coach Petersen said it’s going to be a learn as you go type of start to the season.

The Spartans return Quarterback Tyler Petersen who threw for 1,075 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Another coaches son Trey Petersen will be expected to pick up a chunk of the load in the backfield. Creighton Nelson was relied on heavily in the ground game last year but he is gone to graduation. Coach Birks expects they’ll get the typical strong test from the Spartans.

We’ll have coverage of the game on KJAN. Tune in for our pick ’em show Who’s Gonna Win? at 6:00 p.m. to start the night, followed by The Dvorak Tire and Service Pregame Show at 6:30 p.m., and then kickoff at 7:00 p.m. Chris Parks and Mike Smith will have the call on AM 1220, FM 101.1, online at kjan.com, and you can watch the video broadcast as well on KJANTV.

Atlantic football brings a strong team mindset to the 2020 season

Sports

August 27th, 2020 by admin

Trojan LogoThe Atlantic football team is gearing up for what they feel will be a strong season. The reason they are confident is the wealth of experience that returns to the squad and they are emphasizing a strong team first mentality. Atlantic Head Coach Mike McDermott says this team has strong contributors all across the lineup.

Garrett McLaren returns under center after passing for 612 yards and 6 touchdowns as a sophomore. Caden Andersen is expected to get some action at quarterback as well. Leading receiver Colin Mullenix is back after hauling in 5 touchdowns last year. Grant Sturm and Garrett Reynolds are two other strong returning targets. Coach McDermott knows they have a number of guys that can help fill the void left by graduated star running back Tyler Moen.

With so much experience returning the Trojans are confident they can make some noise this season but Coach McDermott said he thinks they are just anxious to get out and compete at this point.

The Trojans open up the season on the road at Class 1A #9 Underwood on Friday night. You can hear Coach McDermott’s thoughts on that game and the full interview on Friday afternoon at 4:45 p.m. on Trojan Preview on KJAN.

LC’s Fidone picks Nebraska

Sports

One of the country’s top tight end recruits made his college decision last night. Lewis Central’s Thomas Fidone announced that he will attend the University of Nebraska to further his career. Fidone made his announcement on a preseason football television special on KETV. Fidone chose Nebraska over Iowa, Michigan, and LSU.

Fidone led the Titans last year in receiving with 39 catches for 576 yards and seven touchdowns. He will begin his final high school season this Friday night as Lewis Central squares off against St. Albert.

Atlantic cross country with lofty goals again

Sports

August 26th, 2020 by admin

The Atlantic Cross Country teams are prepping to hear the starting gun on Saturday in Glenwood to start the year and both teams have lofty goals again. Head Coach Dan Vargason said the team has had a great work ethic so far.

The boys team is coming off a State appearance last year and return 20th place State finisher Craig Alan Becker. A number of other experienced runners are back with Drew Engler, Zane Berg, Ethan Williams and others working to improve. Coach Vargason said there is some healthy competition to get into the varsity rotation.

The girls team came up just shy of qualifying for the State meet last year and are eager to get back to work. Taylor McCreedy made an individual appearance at State last year and will be leading the way again this year. Ava Rush ran strong much of the season last year but a late season illness held her back a bit at Districts so she’ll be eager to get to work. Coach Vargason said they got a bit of a late start for the girls team to all practice but they have been improving fast. He was impressed by the time cut by both teams at time trials on Tuesday.

The Trojans open up the 2020 season at the Glenwood Co-Ed Meet this Saturday at the Glenwood Lake Park Course. Coach Vargason said it will be a great early measuring stick and he just wants the team to get their feet wet and compete. You can hear the full interview with Coach Vargason on our Saturday Morning Coaches Show at 8:30 a.m. this Saturday.
