Cyclones will wear Jack Trice patches in 2020

Sports

September 1st, 2020 by admin

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State football program supports equality and stands against all forms of racism and discrimination in our society.

In an effort to continue to use our platform and empower change, the Cyclones will be wearing a symbolic Jack Trice patch on their jerseys in 2020.

The Jack Trice story is an important piece of the history of Iowa State Athletics.

The first black student-athlete in Iowa State history, Trice died tragically from injuries suffered in the second game of his career at Minnesota in 1923.

Iowa State University has paid tribute to Trice with a statue and by naming its football stadium in his honor in 1997, the only FBS school in the nation to have a stadium name dedicated to an African-American.

The patch resembles the uniform design Trice wore in 1923.

“Jack Trice’s legacy is powerful and it’s certainly one we embrace in our football program,” Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell said. “Competing in Jack Trice Stadium is an honor and we never want to lose sight on the sacrifices he made. His legacy continues to inspire all of those in our program as we strive to promote equality in our community and the world around us.”

All-Big 12 defensive back Greg Eisworth, a native of Grand Prairie, Texas, soon learned during the recruitment process the importance of his name.

“It’s an amazing honor to know that every time I enter the stadium, not only am I representing Iowa State and everything we stand for, but I’m representing someone who was courageous enough to fight for change — someone who has helped shape college athletics into what it is today, and given minorities the opportunity to do what they love,” Eisworth said.

Iowa State opens the season on Sept. 12 against Louisiana in Jack Trice Stadium. Kickoff is at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN.

Trump calls on Big Ten Conference to play fall football

Sports

September 1st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

The Big Ten Conference, already in court and under pressure from players and parents over its decision to cancel fall football, is now hearing from President Donald Trump. Trump tweeted he has spoken with Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren about reinstating the fall season. The Big Ten had no immediate comment. The league announced Aug. 11 it would move its football season to the spring semester because of health risks associated with the pandemic. Trump has framed the debate over player and fan safety as a political one.

AMES, Iowa – The Big 12 Conference announced today football kickoff times and television selections for opening week along with other select dates and times.

The Iowa State-Louisiana game on Sept. 12 in Jack Trice Stadium will kickoff at 11 a.m. CT on ESPN. The Cyclones, who are ranked No. 23 in the preseason AP poll, will face a Ragin’ Cajun team predicted to finish first in the Sun Belt West Conference.

The Big 12 also announced a date change for Iowa State’s matchup at Texas in November. The game will now be played on Friday, Nov. 27 on either ABC or ESPN networks. Kickoff time will be announced at a later date.

Former Hawkeye A.J. Epenesa on training camp with the Bills

Sports

September 1st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – It has not been the NFL training camp A.J. Epenesa was expecting. The former Iowa star defensive end was taken in the second round of the draft by the Buffalo Bills and they are getting ready for the season while navigating through the pandemic.

With no preseason there is no chance for rookies like Epenesa to get their feet wet.

The Bills open the regular season on September 13 against the New York Jets.

Iowa State counts on experienced defense

Sports

September 1st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – In a Big-12 Conference known for offense Iowa State has become a contender on the strength of its defense. The Cyclones ranked third in scoring defense a year ago and with most of the starters returning that unit could be even better this season. Senior free safety Lawrence White.

White says some new starters will be counted on the step up, including a couple along the defensive line where standout nose guard Ray Lima graduated.

ISU coach Matt Campbell admits there are lofty expectations for the defense.

Campbell says how quickly the new starters emerge will be a key.

The Cyclones open at home against Louisiana on September 12.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Maikel Franco and Bubba Starling had RBI singles in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 in the first game of a three-game series. It was the Royals’ first win this season when trailing after seven innings. Scott Barlow picked up the win in relief for Kansas City.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Paul DeJong hit his first career grand slam, helping Dakota Hudson to his first win of the season as the St. Louis Cardinals held off the Cincinnati Reds 7-5. Hudson finished with a season-high seven strikeouts and no walks. The Cardinals won their second straight after dropping four in a row. The Reds have lost three of four after winning three straight.

UNDATED (AP) — The Broncos, Raiders and Chargers all got faster in the offseason to try to rein in the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. But the Chiefs didn’t stand still. They added plenty of speed on defense to go with all that blazing bustle on offense. The Chiefs begin defense of their Super Bowl title with a season opener against the Houston Texans. Kansas City has ruled its division with four consecutive AFC West titles. The Chiefs have gone 9-1 against each of their division foes over the last five years.

UNDATED (AP) — A new court filing shows that Big Ten presidents voted 11-3 to postpone the football season until spring. The court filing is the Big Ten’s response to a lawsuit brought by a group of Nebraska football players who want the fall season reinstated. The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 it would move its football season from fall to spring because of health risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic. The filing did not identify how each school specifically voted, but a person familiar with the outcome told The Associated Press Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State voted against postponing the fall football season.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — The NCAA has granted immediate eligibility to Iowa State guard Tyler Harris, who transferred from Memphis after last season. Harris averaged 9.9 points per game and made 138 3-pointers in two seasons with the Tigers. He has started 15 of 67 career games. Harris has scored 10 or more points 35 times, posting a career-high 25 in a win against Charleston as a freshman. He is a career 33% shooter on 3-pointers and 84% on free throws. Iowa State also added transfers Jalen Coleman-Lands from DePaul and Blake Hinson from Mississippi.

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Jimmy Butler scored a playoff career-high 40 points, Goran Dragic added 27 and the Miami Heat clamped down defensively in the final three quarters to beat the Milwaukee Bucks 115-104 in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series. Bam Adebayo had 12 points, 17 rebounds and six assists for the fifth-seeded Heat, who are 3-1 overall against the top-seeded Bucks this season. Khris Middleton scored 28 points for Milwaukee, which also dropped Game 1 of its first-round series against Orlando.
