Griswold Activities Director Troy Niklaus released a statement on Tuesday morning that Griswold will be cancelling their football game at East Mills this Friday night. Griswold had to cancel their game last week due to low numbers with some players out with illness. The district has since experienced a couple of COVID-19 infections that impacted a number of students and staff with contact tracing. The Griswold School Board on Monday night voted 6-1 to implement a mask mandate within the district that will go into effect on Wednesday and continue through the end of the semester.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and Matt Wells from Texas Tech on the Big 12 teleconference

Sports

October 6th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa)  – It’s still early but Iowa State has the look of a serious contender in the Big-12 race. After opening the league race with a win at TCU the Cyclones beat Oklahoma and take a number 24 national ranking into Saturday’s game at home against Texas Tech.

That’s ISU coach Matt Campbell who is not concerned about a letdown after a big win over the Sooners.

The Cyclones aren’t sure who they see at quarterback. Alan Bowman was injured in the first quarter of Texas Tech’s loss at Kansas State and was replaced by Utah State transfer Henry Colombi.

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells says quarterback Brock Purdy leads a well rounded Cyclone team.

Wells says the Cyclones are solid in all areas.

Wells says Purdy is playing like a veteran.

The Red Raiders are 1-2 overall.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman had short touchdown catches, the Kansas City defense shut down a Patriots offense missing quarterback Cam Newton, and the Chiefs beat New England 26-10 in a game postponed by positive COVID-19 tests on each team. The matchup between the Patriots and the Super Bowl champs was supposed to be Sunday, but it was put on pause when New England confirmed a player later revealed to be Newton tested positive for COVID-19. Chiefs practice squad QB Jordan Ta’amu also had tested positive, forcing the NFL to postpone the game. The Chiefs led just 6-3 at halftime before pulling away over the final two quarters.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The New England Patriots weren’t about to make any excuses for their loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday night, even though there were plenty of them. Their star quarterback, Cam Newton, tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, leaving the game in the hands of journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer and untested youngster Jarrett Stidham. Running back Sony Michel went on injured reserve earlier in the day with a quad injury. Yet they managed to hang with the Chiefs into the second half of their 26-10 loss.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers connected with tight end Robert Tonyan on three of his four touchdown passes to lead the unbeaten Green Bay Packers to a 30-16 victory over the winless Atlanta Falcons. Rodgers racked up 327 yards passing against the Falcons and has thrown 13 touchdown passes without an interception this season. The 4-0 Packers have opened a season by scoring at least 30 points in four straight games for the first time in franchise history.

UNDATED (AP) — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is warning the league’s 32 teams of penalties including potential forfeits of games for violations of COVID-19 protocols that force changes in the schedule. In a memo sent to the teams and obtained by The Associated Press, Goodell reiterated the need to adhere fully to all of the league’s health and safety guidelines. The NFL was forced to adjust its Week 4 schedule when Tennessee had the league’s first coronavirus outbreak and New England and Kansas City each had a player test positive. The league is now requiring a longer onboarding process for free agent tryouts, banning gatherings outside of the club facility, limiting the number of tryouts permitted per week and implementing a league-wide video monitoring system to ensure compliance.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The New York Yankees took Game 1 of their AL Division Series by banging out four home runs in a 9-3 pounding of the Tampa Bay Rays. The Rays led 3-2 until Kyle Higashioka and Aaron Judge belted solo shots in the fifth inning off Tampa Bay starter and loser Blake Snell. The Yanks put it out of reach with a five-run ninth capped by Giancarlo Stanton’s grand slam.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Carlos Correa homered twice and had four RBIs in the Houston Astros’ 10-5 rout of the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of the AL Division Series. The A’s led 5-3 in the sixth until George Springer laced an RBI double and scored on Jose Altuve’s two-run single. Houston plated four in the sixth following an error by shortstop Marcus Semien with two out and nobody on.

Emerald Coast Classic cancelled for 2020

Sports

October 5th, 2020 by admin

NICEVILLE, FLA.  —  Citing numerous factors, tournament director Maury Hanks has announced the Emerald Coast Classic basketball tournament has been canceled this year.

The Emerald Coast Classic was scheduled for Nov. 27 and 29 with Florida facing Illinois and Iowa State playing Oregon in opening night match ups.

“The landscape in college basketball has changed dramatically this season when you factor in the coronavirus pandemic coupled with the new scheduling policies implemented by the NCAA,” said Hanks. “Teams were also concerned about traveling long distances with the threat of COVID-19.”

“We are disappointed because we had an incredible lineup but we understand the concerns the teams have. All of the teams have expressed a desire to participate in the tournament in the near future.”

“Our program was looking forward to playing in the Emerald Coast Classic as part of a real tough field,” said Iowa State head coach Steve Prohm, whose team captured the 2015 Emerald Coast Classic championship. “Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond anyone’s control that won’t be able to happen this season. We look forward to returning to the event in the future.”

Other participating coaches echoed Prohm’s comments.

“We are disappointed that we are unable to compete in the 2020 Emerald Coast Classic,” said Oregon head coach Dana Altman. “We have always been impressed by events hosted by Global Sports and were looking forward to a competitive field once again.”

“We were looking forward to playing in the Emerald Coast Classic,” added Illinois head coach Brad Underwood. “It’s a great tournament. We hope to return in the near future.”

The Emerald Coast Classic will resume play Nov. 26-27, 2021 with CBS Sports Network televising exclusive coverage of the tournament.

Breece Hall

IRVING, Texas- Iowa State sophomore running back Breece Hall was named the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, announced today by the Big 12 Conference.

A native of Wichita, Kan., Hall was instrumental in guiding the Cyclones to a 37-30 victory over No. 18 Oklahoma on Saturday.

Hall rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, posting 100 yards after intermission in the come-from-behind win. Hall had a two-yard touchdown rush in the first half and his eight-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter was the winning score.

His long run of 36 yards set up the final score.

Hall is the Big 12 leader in rushing yards per game (132.0) and rushing touchdowns (6), ranking third nationally in both categories. He is the only “power 5” back with three 100-yard rushing efforts and is the first Cyclone to go over the 100-yard rushing plateau in the first three games of the season since Ennis Haywood in 2000.
