Iowa receiver plans to kneel during the anthem

Sports

October 21st, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa) – Iowa sophomore receiver Tyrone Tracy says he will kneel during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner prior to the Hawkeyes’ season opener at Purdue. It has been a topic since charges of racial disparities in the program came to light during the summer.

Tracy says he believes the program is moving in the right direction when it comes to the issue of race.

Tracy says there could be other players who join him in taking a knee.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz says players have the option to stand or kneel during the anthem.

Iowa State’s Matt Campbell and Oklahoma State’s Miuke Gundy on Big-12 Teleconference

Sports

October 20th, 2020 by Ric Hanson

(Radio Iowa)  -Iowa State coach Matt Campbell says no matter what happens at sixth ranked Oklahoma State there will be a lot of season remaining. The 17th ranked Cyclones will be on the road this weekend and with a victory would be in the driver’s seat to claim a spot in the Big-12 title game.

The Cyclones have won three straight to open Big-12 play.

The Cyclones are not sure who they will face at quarterback. Oklahoma State starter Spencer Sanders injured an ankle on the second series in the opener against Tulsa and freshman Shane Illingworth has filled in during a 3-0 start.

Illingworth has completed 73 percent of his passes while Sanders has been out.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy won’t say who gets the start on Saturday.

Gundy says both could play on Saturday.

The Cowboys lead the Big-12 in defense by giving up just over nine points per game. Gundy says the challenge gets much tougher beginning Saturday.

Gundy says the Cyclones will present a challenge.

Here is the latest Mid-America sports news from The Associated Press

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Clyde Edwards-Helaire showed new teammate Le’Veon Bell and the rest of the NFL how dominant the Kansas City Chiefs’ running attack is already. The rookie had 161 yards rushing and Patrick Mahomes threw two touchdown passes to Travis Kelce, leading the Chiefs to a 26-17 win over the Buffalo Bills. Monday night’s game was originally scheduled for last Thursday. Mahomes finished 21 of 26 for 225 yards. His first scoring toss to Kelce was the 90th of his career in his 37th game, breaking the NFL record for fewest games to 90 TD passes. Josh Allen had a quiet night for Buffalo, going 14 of 27 for 122 yards and two touchdowns.

UNDATED (AP) — The attorney representing eight Black former Iowa football players who allege racial discrimination during their time with the Hawkeyes said the university’s rejection of their demands, which included a payment of $20 million, is not the end of the matter. Civil rights attorney Damario Solomon-Simmons of Tulsa, Oklahoma, had stated the players’ demands in a 21-page letter to university officials dated Oct. 5. In addition to $20 million, the players called for the firings of head football coach Kirk Ferentz, offensive line coach Brian Ferentz and athletic director Gary Barta. The university general counsel’s office says it won’t give into the demands and that work had already begun to create a more welcoming environment for Black athletes.

UNDATED (AP) — Adrian Martinez turned back a challenge from Luke McCaffrey to win the starting quarterback’s job for Nebraska’s opener at No. 5 Ohio State. McCaffrey made a serious bid to unseat the Cornhuskers’ two-year starter, who struggled with injuries last year and seemed to regress from his fantastic freshman season in 2018. Coach Scott Frost said he feels as if he’s got two starting quarterbacks because there is so little separation between the two. McCaffrey is the brother of NFL star Christian McCaffrey and son of former pro receiver Ed McCaffrey. Luke played quarterback and receiver as a freshman last season.

UNDATED (AP) — Purdue coach Jeff Brohm is expected to miss Saturday’s season opener against Iowa after a second test confirmed he has COVID-19. Big Ten protocol requires players who test positive to sit out 21 days but staff members are required to isolate 10 days. Brohm will not be on the sideline this weekend. Instead, offensive coordinator Brian Brohm will be calling plays.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) — The Rutgers quarterback competition is down to Nebraska graduate transfer Noah Vedral and redshirt sophomore Art Sitkowski. In releasing his depth chart on Monday, Greg Schiano indicated he probably will not disclose his starter until Saturday when he begins his second coaching stint with the Scarlet Knights with a game at Michigan State. There were five players in the running for the quarterback job when training camp started.
