Abortion opponents may soon be able to buy specialty license plates in Iowa.
"Choose Life" new IA license plate design
The state Department of Transportation has approved a plate that will read “Choose Life” below a drawing of two smiling kids’ faces. DOT spokeswoman Dena Gray-Fisher says the group Iowa Right to Life is sponsoring the effort. “Their application for that plate has been approved,” Gray-Fisher says.
“Now they have to gather 500 paid applications before the DOT will take any further action and actually issue the plate.” The group has a deadline of one year to get those 500 applications. While the agency would not allow license plates that support a political candidate, for example, she says the DOT does not judge viewpoints on issues like this. “It is an organization,” Gray-Fisher says. “They can submit an application. As long as the emblem itself is not in some way a sexual connotation, vulgar, profanity, then the DOT will issue them if they can qualify and gather the 500 applicants.” It’s part of a national effort by an anti-abortion group, Choose Life America. Iowa is reportedly the 29th state to approve a “Choose Life” plate.

A new report claims sexual violence, in just one year, cost the state of Iowa $5.8 billion, or $1,875 per resident. The research was financed by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the University of Iowa Injury Prevention Research Center. Binnie LeHew, with the IDPH, talked about the report Thursday at a press conference in Des Moines. “The conclusion we have is that sexual violence is a costly and serious public health problem in Iowa and it has profound short and long term impacts on its victims,” LeHew said. “Because of this, we feel strongly that we have to invest in prevention.”
The report shows, in 2009, more than 55,000 people experienced sexual violence in Iowa. LeHew said around 55-percent of the government’s expenditures associated with sexual violence were tied to the criminal justice system, while just one-percent was directed at prevention efforts. “Not that we don’t need to have resources in the criminal justice system, but we cannot continue to put all of our eggs in that basket,” LeHew said. “We have to invest in prevention and recognize, because so little of sexual violence is ever reported, we have to reach out to people in many other ways – which is what a comprehensive prevention program would do.”
The report noted this year 1 in 35 women in Iowa between the ages of 18 and 44 will experience sexual violence.

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – The Army Corps of Engineers plans to cut the flow of water coming out of Gavins Point Dam in southeast South Dakota next week to check for damage from last year’s flooding. The corps said Friday it will conduct the test on Tuesday to look for damage caused by last summer’s sustained high water releases. People who live downstream from the dam in Nebraska and Iowa could see the Missouri River drop more than a foot on Tuesday because of the test. The corps’ John Remus says preliminary inspections indicated the dam sustained minor damage to its spillway, so officials want to get a better look. If the test is successful, officials will plan to reduce the flow for a longer period in May to complete damage assessments.
Iowa Governor Terry Branstad is expected to sign into law this (Friday) morning, a bill which provides volunteer fire fighters and emergency medical services personnel with an individual income tax credit and includes an effective date and applicability provisions. Senate File 2322 says a volunteer fire fighter and volunteer emergency medical services personnel credit equal to fifty dollars will go into effect January 1st 2013, and is designed to compensate the taxpayer for the voluntary services if the volunteer served for the entire tax year.
The firefighter or EMS taxpayer is required to have a written statement from their fire chief or other appropriate supervisor verifying that they were a volunteer fire fighter or volunteer emergency medical services provider during the tax credit period.
A Red Oak woman was arrested Thursday on theft and drug charges. According to Red Oak Police, 46-year-old Amy Jo Ross was taken into custody on 3rd degree theft, Possession of a controlled substance/marijuana, and Possession of drug paraphernalia charges. Ross was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $2,000 bond.

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Angry parents, students and University of Northern Iowa faculty members have disrupted an Iowa Board of Regents news conference in Cedar Falls. The protesters are angry at funding cuts that will result in the closing of the university’s Malcolm Price Laboratory School and several academic programs. More than 100 protesters started with a rally outside the building in which the Regents met yesterday.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley is welcoming the U.S. Labor Department’s decision to withdraw a much-criticized proposed rule about children working on farms. Grassley released a statement last night expressing relief at the Labor Department’s decision to abandon what he called “ridiculous regulations” that could have hurt farm families.
INDIANOLA, Iowa (AP) — A judge has approved a settlement in a legal battle between the family of a slain Milo farmer and a neighbor who confessed to shooting him. The Des Moines Register reports a settlement was approved yesterday in Warren County District Court. It ends nine years of legal feuding between the family of slain Milo farmer Tom Lyon and his assailant Rodney Heemstra.
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) — The Detroit Lions have selected Iowa offensive tackle Riley Reiff with the 23rd overall pick in the NFL draft. With the top defensive backs off the board, the Lions elected to add a starter along their aging offensive line. The 6 foot 6 315 pound tackle is a native of Parkston, South Dakota.

CHARLES CITY (AP) — A company based in the Czech Republic has opened its first North American tire factory in Charles City. Mitas opened the plant today in a ceremony attended by Governor Terry Branstad and Petr Gandalovic, the Czech ambassador to the United States.
SIOUX CITY (AP) — A Sioux City-based maker of vinyl and aluminum windows and doors says it is expanding its South Sioux City, Nebraska manufacturing operations. The Sioux City Journal in Iowa says Gerkin Windows and Doors is breaking ground on land near its current 165,000-square-foot factory built in 2004.
SIOUX CITY (AP) — Morningside College Athletic Director Jerry Schmutte will resign next month to take a position in Hastings College in Hastings, Nebraska. Officials at Sioux City-based Morningside say Robbie Rohlena, dean of enrollment, will act as interim athletic director starting June 1st. The search for Schmutte’s replacement is under way.
WATERLOO (AP) — Mitchell County supervisors are sending out requests for architects to submit proposals for a new courthouse. The decision came after a consultant said creating an efficient work space in the existing courthouse built in 1858 would be difficult. Supervisor Joel Voaklander says he’s sending letters to about a half-dozen architectural firms. He’s also looking into temporary space for courthouse offices.
The Audubon County Sherriff’s Office says an Audubon woman was cited after a single vehicle accident Thursday morning. At about 8:00 AM Thursday, a 2006 Chevy Equinox driven by 42-year-old Angela Marie Nielsen of Audubon was traveling east on Highway 44 about 3 miles east of Kimballton. Nielsen drove onto the shoulder and overcorrected. Her vehicle then slid sideways into the north ditch and rolled.
Nielsen was transported by Elk Horn Fire and Rescue to the Audubon County Memorial Hospital. An update on any possible injuries is not currently available.
Nielsen has been charged with failure to maintain control. Damage from the accident amounted to about $8,000.
