The Iowa State Patrol says a truck driver from Michigan was cited following an investigation into an accident Monday morning on Interstate 80, in Adair County. Officials say 64-year old Franklin LeRoy Voss, of Port Austin, MI., was cited for Failure to Maintain Control, after the 2009 tractor-trailer he was driving left I-80 westbound near the 88-mile marker, at around 8-a.m., Monday.

The semi, registered to Stageline Express, of Coopersville, MI, entered the median and hit a cable guardrail, which stopped the rig and became entangled beneath the tractor and trailer. Voss was not injured during the accident, but a passenger in the cab, 45-year old Gregory Lynn Harris, suffered minor injuries. He refused transportation to the hospital.

Damage from the accident amounted to $8,500.

In a follow-up to our story earlier this week, officials say a truck driver from California was cited for Failure to Maintain Control and Failure to Move over for a Patrol Car, following an investigation into Monday’s crash on Interstate 80 in Adair County, that sent a State Patrol Trooper to the hospital. In information released late Tuesday, the Patrol said 59-year old Michael Patrick O’Hara, of Hesperia, CA, was cited.

O’Hara, who was driving a 2013 Volvo semi registered to Hill Brothers Transportation, of Omaha, was traveling west in the right hand lane of I-80 area around 10:17-a.m. Monday, when he became distracted, looked up and saw traffic in front of him slowing for an earlier accident being covered by Iowa State Patrol Trooper Todd Granner. O’Hara slammed on his brakes, which caused the semi to lose control.

The rig crossed both lanes of traffic and struck the left rear corner of Granner’s 2009 Ford Crown Victoria cruiser, which was parked in the left, westbound lane of traffic with its emergency lights activated. After the cruiser was hit, the semi struck a cable guard rail and came to rest in the median. The accident happened near the 89.2-mile marker.

Trooper Granner was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital to be checked for injuries before being released. Damage from the crash amounted to $11,000.

Police in Council Bluffs are looking for three suspects in connection with a home invasion, robbery and assault that happened Tuesday night. According to Sgt. Dave Dawson with the Council Bluffs P-D, at around 9:40-p.m., three black males of unknown age, entered a residence at 2404 7th Avenue, through an unlocked back door. All of the suspects wore masks. Two of the men had a handgun and rifle, while the third was brandishing a “billy club.”

The suspects found 56-year old Beverly Breeden in her bedroom. One of the men held a rifle to her head. The other suspects entered a separate bedroom, where they found 18-year old Taylor Shew, of Council Bluffs, and a 16-year old female.

One of the suspects held a gun to the juvenile’s forehead and then began to assault her while at the same time demanding money. The teen was later treated for minor head and rib injuries at at hospital in Council Bluffs. Shew complied with the suspects’ orders, and handed them his wallet. The three armed men then fled the area in a brown Dodge Durango with unknown plates.  If you have any information pertaining to the crime, call Crime Stoppers at 712-328-7867.

Two men from Red Oak were arrested Tuesday on separate charges. According to Red Oak Police, 22-year old Cody Dean Johnson was arrested at around 6:40-p.m. in the 100 block of West Valley Street, on a charge of Domestic Abuse Assault. Johnson was being held without bond, in the Montgomery County Jail.

And, at around 3:45-p.m. Tuesday, Red Oak Police arrested 23-year old Ty Andrew Chandler, of Red Oak, on charges of Eluding and Trespassing. Chandler was being held in the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center on $1,300 bond.

Jurors in the case of a Pottawattamie County man accused of killing a rural Cass County woman, will hear opening statements in less than two weeks. The Daily NonPareil reports the trial for Robert A. Reynolds Jr. is scheduled to begin on July 22nd. The 63-year old has plead not guilty to a charge of first-degree murder in connection to the shooting death of 64-year old Patricia Kinkade-Dorsey.

GRAETTINGER, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say two boys have died after a northern Iowa house fire. Palo Alto County firefighters say they went in and found 5-year-old Gavin Hasbrouck and 7-year-old Collin Reed, who were taken to Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg with their mother. Authorities say the boys were pronounced dead at the hospital.

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) — A jury has begun deliberations in the case of an eastern Iowa man who tried to use his rare cancer condition as a defense to marijuana-growing charges. Attorneys for both sides in the Benton Mackenzie case gave closing arguments Tuesday. The jury began deliberations but was sent home a short time later. They will resume Wednesday. The 48-year-old Mackenzie and his wife Loretta, both of Long Grove, are charged with manufacturing marijuana and other drug charges.

MOULTON, Iowa (AP) — Officials say remains found in Germany in 2012 have been positively identified as belonging to a WWII airman from Iowa who went missing more than 69 years ago. The Iowa National Guard says Staff Sgt. Robert “Bobby” E. Howard, of Moulton, Iowa, was 21 years old in April 1945 when his aircraft was shot down over Germany. He and four other crew members were officially declared dead, though their remains were never recovered.

HUDSON, Iowa (AP) — Firefighters battled a fire at a rural hog confinement operation in northeast Iowa. Officials say a structure at the confinement in Hudson caught fire Tuesday before spreading to an adjacent building. Heavy smoke and impaired visibility was reported. The second structure contained hogs, and some are believed to have died in the fire. It is unclear how many hogs were inside.

A truck driver from Clarinda was arrested Tuesday evening in Cass County on suspicion of drug trafficking. Cass County Sheriff’s Deputy Tyler Shiels told KJAN News that around 6:46-p.m., he initiated a traffic stop on a semi that was traveling 70-miles per hour in a 55 zone. The semi, driven by 37-year old Nathan Allen Johnson, of Clarinda, was stopped on Highway 71 near the intersection with Denver Road, just south of Interstate 80.

Shiels said upon making contact with the driver, probable cause was established to search the vehicle, during which the initial investigation resulted in approximately 5-grams of methamphetamine being seized, along with drug paraphernalia (Scales), two handguns and an unspecified amount of cash, leading authorities to believe the Johnson may have been involved in distribution and sale of narcotics.He was arrested on the possession, along with intent to deliver, charges.

Johnson was released from the jail on Wednesday. Assisting with the investigation was Cass County Deputy Josh McClaren, and an Iowa Department of Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division officer.
