(Update) Griswold teen injured in accident

A teen from Griswold was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital following an accident this (Monday) afternoon. The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports 17-year old Maria Edna Amos was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger eastbound on Yankton Road, when she lost control of the pickup. The vehicle rolled into the north ditch and landed on its wheels. The accident happened at around 12:23-p.m.

Amos complained of back pain following the crash. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $5,000. Deputies cited Amos for Failure to Maintain Control.

Atlantic Area Chamber Takes on Christmas Box Program

The Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with local businesses, will be taking over the Christmas Box Program this holiday season. According to Chamber Executive Director Bailey Smith, “The program was started by the Atlantic Jaycees over 20 years ago and helps families and individuals in need of a Christmas dinner.

“When the Jaycees disbanded, there was a need for an organization to take the project on.” Smith said “Personally, I had a hard time handling the thought of community members not having a meal for the holiday’s so as an organization, we knew it was a project we were willing to take on.”

This year, officials with the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce and volunteers will help fill boxes with items families and individuals can use to cook Christmas dinner. The boxes will be filled and delivered December 20th to those who have been nominated. According to Smith “The Jaycees put a lot of time, effort and generosity into this program and the Chamber is happy to take it on and help brighten up the holidays for those in our community who need it.”

Friday night accident in Cass County

The Cass County Sheriff’s Office reports that at around 7:30-p.m. Friday, a single-vehicle accident occurred on Quincy Road. A 2008 Hyundai Elantra driven by 26-year old Derrick Lee Behlers, of Atlantic, was eastbound on Quincy Road when Behlers reportedly swerved to miss a deer and entered the south ditch. The vehicle came to rest on its top. No injuries were reported.

Damage to the vehicle is estimated at $5,000. Upon investigation, Behlers was charged with OWI 2nd Offense, and he was cited for Failure to Maintain Control. Behlers was taken to the Cass County Jail where he was released the following day on his own recognizance.

Atlantic Police issue accident report (12/11)

Officials with the Atlantic Police Department have issued a report on a couple of accidents. Authorities say last Thursday, Lori Blum, of Marne, was attempting to park in front of the Olsen’s BP store at around 8:50-a.m., when her vehicle hit the ice machine, causing $3,800 damage to the machine, and $1,500 damage to the vehicle. No injuries were reported.  And, on Dec. 2nd at around 9:05-p.m., vehicles driven by Kim Petersen, of Atlantic, and Shelbi Williamson, of Exira, collided near the intersection of 7th and Mulberry Streets.

The accident happened while Petersen was driving westbound on 7th Street and turning onto Mulberry. Williamson was headed north on Mulberry and stopped at the stop sign. Petersen made a left turn onto Mulberry onto Mulberry, and in the process, struck Williamson’s vehicle on the left front corner. Petersen complained of injuries and was checked by Medivac personnel, but declined transport to the hospital. She was cited for Turning at Intersection. Williamson was cited for Failure to provide proof of insurance.

Page County man arrested Dec. 7th on warrants

Page County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested a man last Thursday, who wanted on a couple of warrants for Failure to Appear (in court). 28-year old Samuel James Crapson, of College Springs, was transported from Douglas County, NE. Corrections to the Page County Jail for holding, on a $2,000 bond.

Red Oak woman arrested on an assault charge Monday morning

Police in Red Oak arrested 27-year old Saraya Lynn Ehly, of Red Oak, at around 9:15-a.m. today (Monday). Officers were called to the 1300 block of N. 8th Street, for a physical domestic altercation. Once on the scene and after an investigation, Police arrested Ehly for Domestic Abuse Assault/1st offense, and transported her to the Montgomery County Jail. She was being held without bond, pending an appearance before a magistrate.

17-year old injured in Cass County accident, Monday

A 17-year old female was reportedly suffering from back pain following a rollover accident that took place at around 12:24-p.m. today, in southern Cass County. The accident happened just west of the intersection of 620th and Yankton Road. Griswold Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the scene. No other details are available at this time.

2 vehicle accident in Page County, Friday evening

No injuries were reported in Page County, Friday, after the driver of a vehicle veered for the deer and struck another vehicle. The Page County Sheriff’s Office says at around 6:30-p.m.,  59-year old Marilyn Diane Shore, of Clarinda, was driving a 2005 Dodge Caravan northbound on Highway 71, about one-mile north of Clarinda. 43-year old Lavonne Suzanne Squires, of Villisca, was driving a 2012 Ford Focus also northbound, following the Shore vehicle.

When a deer ran onto the roadway, Squires swerved and accelerated into the southbound lane to avoid it. There was a vehicle coming toward the Squires vehicle in the southbound lane. Squires then swerved back into the northbound lane and struck the rear driver’s side fender of the Shore vehicle with the front passenger side fender. Damage from the collision amounted to $8,000. No citations were issued.

Clarke County woman involved in Atlantic accident is arrested on drug charges

The Atlantic Police Department reports a woman from Clarke County who was involved in an accident Saturday evening, now faces drug-related charges. 45-year old Tamara Humphrey, of Osceola, was arrested after being checked out and treated as necessary, at the Cass County Memorial Hospital. She was charged Possession of a Controlled Substances – Meth and Marijuana.

As we mentioned during our earlier reports, Humphrey was traveling west on 7th Street with a green light, when she turned in front of an eastbound SUV driven by Preston Reese, of Atlantic, at the intersection with the Wal-Mart north entrance. Reese wasn’t injured in the crash. The vehicles sustained a total of $13,000 damage. In addition to the drug charges, Humphreys was cited for Failure to Yield and Violation of the conditions of her restricted license. The accident happened at around 4:40-p.m., Saturday. Humphrey remained in the Cass County Jail.

In other activity, Atlantic Police Chief Dave Erickson reports 36-year old Sandi Wagner, of Atlantic, was arrested Saturday on a Dallas County warrant for Theft in the 5th Degree. She later posted bond and was released. 56-year old Randy Robert, of Atlantic, was arrested Dec. 6th, on a Cass County warrant for Failure to Appear in Court. 36-year old Adam Carstens, of Atlantic, was arrested Dec. 4th, for Domestic Abuse Assault (Impeding Air Flow) and Obstruction of Emergency Communications. Also, on Nov. 28th, 22-year old Tyler Osborn, of Atlantic, was arrested for Burglary in the 3rd Degree, and Public Intoxication.

Unless otherwise mentioned, all subjects were booked into the Cass County Jail.

2 correctional officers attacked in eastern Iowa jail

BURLINGTON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say two eastern Iowa correctional officers were sent to the hospital with injuries after they were attacked by inmates at the Des Moines County Correctional Center. The Des Moines County sheriff’s office says authorities were called to the jail shortly after 4 p.m. Sunday on a report that a correctional officer was pinned down in a maximum security area for male inmates.

Authorities say the unidentified correctional officer was attacked by three inmates and was later pulled out of the cell by another staff member. The officer was admitted to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. Authorities say a second correctional officer was also taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the attack. The entire jail remains on lockdown.
