Coca-Cola Days will be held tomorrow, September 28th and Saturday, September 29th in Downtown Atlantic. The event is the second biggest collector’s show in the United States and includes a tailgate barbecue open to the public, a Show, Swap & Sell, “On the Road with Coca-Cola Raffle” and many more activities for all ages.

The tailgate barbecue will be held tomorrow night at the Rock Island Depot, located at 102 Chestnut St. and is open to the entire public. For $6.50 you will receive a burger, potato salad, beans, desert and a drink.

This year’s raffle follows the 2018 theme, “On the Road with Coca-Cola”. Items include: a Coca-Cola Mini Fridge; $100 gift card to HyVee; gift card to Fareway; one-night stay at Boulder’s Inn & Suites; one-night stay at Atlantic Inn & Suites; red travel cooler and a Coca-Cola table runner, donated by Something For You. Raffle tickets are $5 for a chance and available at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce or at the Show, Swap & Sell meet this Saturday, September 29th. The raffle will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday at the close of the Show, Swap and Sell at the Herring Building, located at 2nd and Poplar Street. You do not have to be present to win.

T-Shirts for the 2018 Coca-Cola Days Celebration are also available for purchase. The shirts are gray and feature the theme, “On the Road with Coca-Cola”. T-Shirts can be purchased for $16 at the Atlantic Area Chamber of Commerce or at the Show, Swap & Sell this Saturday.

Red Oak, Iowa – Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Montgomery County office will host an Aquatic, Forest and Right-of-Way Continuing Instruction Course (CIC) for commercial pesticide applicators on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018. The program provided by the ISU Extension and Outreach Pesticide Safety Education Program (PSEP) can be seen at office locations across Iowa.

The local attendance site for the Oct. 17 CIC is the Montgomery County Extension office located at 400 Bridge Street Suite #2 in Red Oak. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. followed by sessions from 9 to 11:30 a.m. The registration fee is $35 on or before Oct. 10 and $45 after Oct. 10. In Shelby County the local attendance site for the Oct. 17 CIC is 906 6^th Street. The course will provide continuing instruction credits for commercial and public pesticide applicators certified in categories 2 (Forest Pest Control), 5 (Aquatic Pest Control), 6 (Right-of-Way Pest Control), and 10 (Research and Demonstration). Topics to be covered are: equipment calibration; phytotoxicity; pesticide drift reduction; principles of limited area application; aquatic invasive species update; control of tree of heaven and red cedar; white oak mortality; and Phragmites control. The Mills County Sheriff’s Office reports one arrest and one accident on Wednesday.

At 2:03pm Sheriff’s Deputies arrested 45-year-old William Joseph Weis of Glenwood on a valid warrant for Violation of Probation. He was being held on $10,000 bond.

The accident occurred at 11:30pm at the intersection of Marion Avenue and East 7th Street.  It was determined that 44-year-old Cherry Parker of Malvern was driving a 2006 Nissan east on 7th Street and made a right hand turn onto Marion Avenue but left the roadway and collided with a street sign, knocking it over. The vehicle left the scene but a mudflap was left at the scene. The vehicle was later located two blocks away in a driveway in the alley. The damage matched the damage that would of been likely at the scene at it was missing a mud flap. No arrest or charges were immediately made.

The Creston Police Department reports the arrest Wednesday evening of 19-year-old Max Kilgore of Creston. Kilgore was arrested at 5:48pm at the Law Enforcement Center on 2 counts of 5th Degree Theft. He was then released from custody on a Promise to Appear in court at a later date.

The Red Oak Police Department reports no injuries occurred during a two vehicle accident on Wednesday morning. At 10:00am Officers were called to an accident at the intersection of 8th Street and Washington Street in Red Oak. It was determined that a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country Van driven by 76-year-old Fred Don Tremble of Red Oak was traveling northbound on North 8th Street and failed to stop at a stop sign with the intersection with East Washington Street. The van struck a 2007 Ford Edge driven by 50-year-old Rodney Dean Straw of Red Oak on the drivers side as Straw was traveling westbound on East Washington Street. Damage to both vehicles was estimated at $6,000 each and both were towed from the scene. Tremble was cited for Failure to Obey a Stop Sign.

Red Oak Police were assisted by the Red Oak Fire Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and Montgomery County EMA.

The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office reports the arrest of a Griswold man on Tuesday evening after a traffic stop. At 7:15pm Tuesday a Deputy on patrol near Treynor spotted a vehicle with expired registration eastbound on Highway 92 from 300th Street. The deputy then initiated a traffic stop on the 2001 Mercury Cougar and made contact with the driver.

It was determined that the driver, 57-year-old Randall Main of Griswold, had a valid arrest warrant for 4th Degree Theft. Main was taken into custody and booked into the Pottawattamie County Jail without incident. He was being held on $1,000 bond.

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a former southwestern Iowa city clerk accused of stealing thousands of dollars from the city of Riverton has pleaded not guilty to bank fraud.

In a news release Wednesday, U.S. Attorney Marc Krickbaum says 57-year-old Carol Jennings pleaded not guilty on Thursday. She was indicted by a federal grand jury in August. The indictment says Jennings opened two accounts with a local bank using falsified documents and deposited city funds into the accounts. Prosecutors say she then converted most of the money for her own use.

Her trial has been set for Nov. 5.

An audit of Riverton’s financial records in 2016 showed nearly $331,000 in improper or unsupported spending and undepostited collections. The audit was conducted after Jennings was fired in 2015.

Erica Dawn Hughes

Fremont County Sheriff Kevin Aistrope reports a Council Bluffs woman was arrested on Wednesday night on prostitution and drug charges.

On Wednesday evening an undercover deputy made contact with 37-year-old Erica Dawn Hughes of Council Bluffs. Erica was located in a truck stop area near Percival. During contact with the Deputy, Hughes agreed to perform sexual acts with the undercover Deputy.

Hughes was then taken into custody for Prostitution and also was in possession of methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Hughes was transported to the Fremont County Law Enforcement Center and held on a $100,000 bond.

A Nebraska man was arrested after a pursuit Wednesday morning that began in Pottawattamie County. A Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted to stop a vehicle that was reported stolen at 8:04am Wednesday near North 16th Street and Nash Boulevard in Council Bluffs. The vehicle failed to stop and lead law enforcement on a chase that went through the Harrah’s Casino property and eventually onto I-480 westbound into Nebraska.

Iowa Law Enforcement stopped pursuit when the vehicle entered Nebraska. They were then notified that the vehicle had driven through a fence and down an embankment onto Cass Street near 20th Street in Omaha. Two male subjects fled the vehicle onto the Creighton University Campus and campus security was notified. Omaha Police along with other law enforcement searched for the two men and apprehended the male driver.

The man was identified as 29-year-old James Horn of Fremont, NE. He was found to have three arrest warrants for weapons possession, assault, and violation of a protective order. He was taken to the Douglas County Jail. Pottawattamie County Deputies will be filing traffic charges on Mr. Horn and obtaining an additional arrest warrant. No information on the other male in the vehicle has been released.

The license plates on the car were entered stolen by the North Platte Police Department but the vehicle was not entered as stolen. The vehicle, a Nissan Altima, was impounded.

During the pursuit the vehicle struck another vehicle on I-480. Nobody was injured as a result of that collision and an accident report was completed.
