Audubon High School FFA Advisor Brittany Elmquist says the Audubon High School Chapter of the FFA has been awarded a $1,500 “Planting a Seed” grant from the Iowa Food & Family Project. The grant will be used to conduct activities which increase agricultural awareness and interest among youth in food production and life sciences. The “Planting a Seed” program is sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred, in cooperation with the Iowa FFA Foundation.
The Audubon FFA and other grant recipients, will conduct programs this spring that stimulate interest among K-through 12 students in agricultural careers, and emphasize the role science and technology play in providing wholesome food, using less land and fewer inputs. The Audubon Chapter of the FFA plans to host a “Poverty Dinner” for the entire Audubon High School student body, grades 8-through 12. The goal of the event is to increase awareness about food insecurity and the important role farmers play in providing greater quantities of wholesome food for more people.
The dinner will be held during lunch on March 21st, with students randomly assigned to one of three Socio-economic levels that represent proportional global standards of living. The meal might be one of just rice and beans eaten on the floor, or, a nice four-course meal…depending on the students’ assigned socio-economic status. Prior to the dinner, FFA members will discuss scenarios which set the stage for the meal, and what the average day is like for people in the various levels around the world.
During the week leading up to the event, the Audubon FFA Chapter will post facts about agriculture and related Ag-science careers. The chapters’ members will also be recognized April 23rd at the Iowa FFA State Leadership Conference in Ames. The State Chapter determined to have conducted the most innovative and successful activity, will be presented with a $1,500 Award of Excellence, to be used for general chapter activity.
A Red Oak man was arrested Sunday night on a charge of Simple Domestic Assault. According to Red Oak Police, 19-year old Caleb Lee Walter was taken into custody at around 11:35-p.m.. Walter was being held in the Montgomery County Jail on $300 bond, pending a court appearance.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Police in Iowa’s Linn County are now accepting text message tips about crimes. Anyone can now send text message tips to 274637 with the number 5227 in the subject line to reach the Linn County Crime Stoppers.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — A wild turkey has created traffic trouble in Cedar Rapids, so experts are trying to relocate the bird. Cedar Rapids television station KGAN reports that the bird likes to strut across busy streets in the northeast part of the city. The director of the Blackhawk County Wildlife Project says she’s working to relocate the turkey once he can be apprehended.
AMES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa State earned a Number 8 seed for the NCAA tournament and will play ninth-seeded Connecticut in Louisville on Thursday. It’s the first NCAA tournament bid in seven years for the Cyclones. The Iowa Hawkeyes will host Dayton in the National Invitational Tournament on Tuesday. And Northern Iowa also earned an NIT bid. The Panthers will play at second-seeded St. Joseph’s on Wednesday.
ST. CHARLES, Mo. (AP) — Jim Flanery waited a long time for this moment. In his 10th season at Creighton and after a bunch of close misses, he finally gets a chance to coach in the NCAA tournament. “We’re thrilled to be here,” Flanery said after the Bluejays beat Drake 53-38 in the Missouri Valley Conference women’s tournament final yesterday in St. Charles, Missouri. Omaha-based Creighton’s men’s basketball team is also headed to the NCAA tournament.
The Massena City Council will meet in a regular session Monday, beginning at 7-p.m. During the meeting, the Council will receive an update on the Sewer/Water system from MSA Professionals, discuss and possibly act on a bid for a High Service Pump, and act on removing former fire chief Chris Blaine from the City’s credit card.
In other business, the Council in Massena will discuss and possible act on: Electronic community events and/or “Welcome” entrance signs; Improvements to Centennial Park; Franchise Agreements; and Agreement between the City and Railroad Management, LLC; and, nuisance properties and junkyards.
A public hearing will be held Monday evening in Audubon, with regard to the City’s proposed Fiscal Year 2012-2013 Budget. A resolution approving the budget will follow the hearing, which begins just after 7-p.m.
In other business, the Council will hear about tornado preparedness, a golf cart ordinance, and act on a resolutiuon establishing employee compensation practices. Additional discussion will cover an ordinance banning parking in yards, within the Audubon City limits.

A traffic stop in the vicinity of 7th and Walnut early this (Sunday) morning ended with a chase and a crash on the west side of town.
Chevy HHR involved in chash & crash Sunday (3-11-12)
Atlantic Police chased a silver Chevy HHR to an area just west of the Salvation Army Thrift Store on West 7th Street, where the vehicle went out of control and crashed into a large piece of agricultural equipment on the north side of 7th Street/Highway 6, belonging to Lindeman Tractor. The accident happened at around 3:35-a.m.
The male driver of the vehicle suffered trauma to his head, but was reportedly out of the vehicle and walking when Atlantic Rescue and Medivac were dispatched to the scene. The unidentified man was transported to the Cass County Memorial Hospital for treatment. Police Chief Steve Green has confirmed the man was transported from CCMH by Lifenet Helicopter to Creighton University Hospital in Omaha.

A report on his condition is not available from the hospital due to privacy restrictions. Green said additional information would be released Monday.
The incident remained under investigation, Sunday.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department investigated a home invasion-type incident Thursday night, in Villisca. Sheriff’s officials reported this weekend a 9-1-1 call was received at about 9:40-p.m. Thursday, from a woman who said that a white man wearing a grey hooded sweatshirt and black ski mask attempted to confront her when she entered the back door of her residence. The woman ran from the home and call authorities.
A Sheriff’s Deputy on the scene within three-minutes cleared the residence. Authorities believe the suspect ran out the back of the residence. Red Oak Police and a Montgomery County K-9 Unit assisted in a search for the suspect.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Montgomery County Crimestoppers at 1-800-432-1001. Authorities are also asking people in the area to keep an eye out for any suspicious activity in and around their residence.

NEW HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) — A Charles City man is dead following a crash in northeastern Iowa’s Chickasaw County. The Iowa State Patrol says that 77-year-old Duane Vick was driving in New Hampton when he veered into a ditch and his van caught fire around 4 a.m. Thursday.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) — A Sioux City woman is alive after police pulled her from a burning home. Michelle Bock thought her 4-year-old and 18-month-old granddaughters were still inside a second-floor bedroom when she ran back inside her burning home on Friday. Emergency responders found Bock unconscious at the top of the stairs and took her to a hospital. Everyone else made it out of the burning home unhurt.

School officials tell Omaha, Neb., television station KETV that the current high school is falling apart, but two bond measures to fund a new building have failed. In February, 55 percent of Riverside patrons said yes to a new school, but the initiative needed 60 percent to pass. Some patrons have said it would be cheaper to renovate the current building, but district Superintendent Jim Sutton says putting more money into such an outdated building would be a waste. The bond that failed in February would have raised $13 million. District officials say building a new school would cost $21 million.
