Police in Council Bluffs say an arrest is likely soon resulting from an investigation into the embezzlement of more than $100,000 from Alter Trading Corporation, a metal recycling company. Council Bluffs Police Sgt. David Dawson told the Daily NonPareil a male employee at the Alter Corporation allegedly issued unauthorized checks to his family members. The checks, which were written from Jan. 1st, 2012 through this past Wednesday, amounted to $102, 436.

The suspect, if arrested, would face felony charges of first-degree theft, punishable by a maximum of up to 10 years in prison.

A Red Oak man was arrested early this (Saturday) morning on a Public Intoxication charge. According to Red Oak Police, 51-year old David Lawrence Howe was arrested in the 1800 block of East Summit Street at around 1:25-a.m.   Howe was brought to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on a $300 cash bond.

Sheriff’s officials in Montgomery County report three young adults from Council Bluffs were arrested on drug charges early this (Saturday) morning, following a traffic stop on Highway 34. The vehicle, driven by 19-year old Dillion Michael Clemons, was stopped at around 2:50-a.m.  Clemons was charged with OWI/1st offense, Possession with the Intent to Deliver/Marijuana, and a drug tax stamp violation. His bond was set at $5,000.

Two passengers in the vehicle were arrested for Possession with the Intent to Deliver/Marijuana, and a drug tax stamp violation. 19-year old’s Travis Jay Austin Brightbill and Jeffri Madison West, were being held in the jail on $5,000 bond each.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – This year’s corn crop is the largest the nation has ever seen, and exceeds earlier government projections.  In its first report since the government shutdown, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said Friday it expects 13.99 billion bushels of corn. It had forecast 13.8 billion bushels. The previous record was 13.1 billion in 2009.

Heavy rains delayed spring planting and drought conditions returned to parts of the Midwest. Some analysts thought there would be a subpar harvest. But adequate rain and cooler temperatures at pollination time produced exceptional results, especially in Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio. Prices dropped below $4.20 a bushel Friday, the lowest since 2010.

That means some farmers see lower profits, but chicken, pork, and beef producers will have lower feed costs. Grocery prices won’t be impacted.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Two Republican senators say just five people have enrolled in health insurance plans through the District of Columbia’s new insurance exchange. Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Senator Orrin Hatch of Utah say many Americans are having their health insurance canceled due to President Barack Obama’s health care overhaul but are unable to enroll in a new plan.

THOMPSON, Iowa (AP) – The last hurrah for Thompson Mayor Roger Johnson came two days after his death, when he won re-election. Winter Funeral Home says the 85-year-old Johnson died Sunday at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. But his name remained on the ballot for Tuesday’s municipal election in Thompson, a town of 502 people about six miles from the Minnesota state line.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A Des Moines man has been accused of breaking into a neighbor’s house and offering to mow the lawn. Des Moines police say the burglary victim awoke Thursday afternoon and heard his dogs barking. The victim told police he found 28-year-old Nathan Greene standing in the living room. Greene is accused of offering to then mow the victim’s lawn for $5. Police say the victim ordered Greene out and he complied.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A 43-year-old inmate has been captured following his escape from a work release facility in Sioux City. Fred Scaletta of the state Department of Corrections says David Kreider was apprehended Friday in Sioux City. He’s being held at the Woodbury County Jail.

Officials at the Sioux City Residential Treatment Facility say Kreider didn’t return as scheduled from his overnight shift job on Thursday morning. He’s serving a 20-year sentence for willful injury and other crimes. He was convicted of stabbing a man in October 2004.  In July last year, Kreider left the center without permission. He was found two days later by U.S. marshals and subsequently convicted of voluntary absence.

Scaletta says Kreider was given another opportunity for work release because officials perceived that his behavior had improved.

Police in Red Oak arrested local man late Friday morning for violating a court order. Officers responded to a reported verbal domestic disturbance at a residence in the 1000-block of North 5th Street at around 11:50-a.m. Upon investigation, they determined 35-year old Michael Shane Sunny Cantrell, of Red Oak, did have a valid protective order issued against him by the female in the residence.

Cantrell was taken  into custody and booked into the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center, where he was being held on $300 bond.

Authorities in Montgomery County say a Nebraska man was arrested following an investigation into an accident Friday evening, in Coburg. 66-year old Donald Plott, Jr. of Omaha, was arrested in Page County on an OWI charge.

Officials say just after 7-p..m. Friday, a 1985 Dodge pickup driven by Plott, Jr., was eastbound on 270th Street about one-third of a mile west of West Railway Road in Coburg, when his pickup crossed the center line, causing his side-view mirror to collide with the side-view mirror of a westbound 2004 Chevy Silverado pickup driven by 49-year old Roger Allen Abraham, of Red Oak.

Plott failed to stop and continued west on 270th and then south onto Highway 48 into a rural driveway in Page County, where Abraham was able to get Plott to stop, while they waited for Page and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Deputies to arrive.

Damage from the incident amounted to $1,950. No injuries were reported.

The Cass County Salvation Army Chapter had their Red Kettle Campaign Kickoff on Wednesday (Nov. 6th), at the China Hut Restaurant in Atlantic. Local officials say last year (2012) the Red Kettle Campaign brought in over $10,000 in donations, the largest amount ever collected for the Cass County Unit, #209.

90-percent of all donations collected stay in Cass County. The money has been used for assisting individuals with food and shelter after being stranded in the area either due to bad weather or car problems, etc. Over $9,000 was used to assist with needs in the local area. Programs receiving funds this year included:

Parents As Teachers (for meeting supplies); School Principals receiving gift cards for identified students in need; Each Cass County School district received book bags to distribute to kids; Atlantic Food Pantry for Meat; Athletic shoes for needy students participating is sports partnering with Brown Shoe Fit; The Alternative School for food and hygiene products and clothing to assist students in applying for and starting jobs and the “Shop with a Cop” and “Family Dream Christmas” gift cards.

The community has been very supportive of the Red Kettle Campaign in Cass County, and the local Salvation Army Chapter is expressing its gratitude for your ongoing support. This year, the organization welcomes a new Bell Ringing Chairman, Mark Wedemeyer. He and Dave Hancock will be instrumental in finding volunteers. A Judge in Pottawattamie County has sentenced a Council Bluffs man to five-years in prison for maintaining a drug-involved premises. 27-year old Justin Ray Smith was also ordered Thursday, to serve a two-year term of supervised release following his incarceration. On Feb. 8th, Smith pled guilty to the charge, which was the result of an investigation conducted by several law enforcement agencies into the importation and distribution of marijuana by a known drug trafficking group operating in the Council Bluffs and Omaha areas.

Marijuana was distributed by the group from May, 2009 through March, 2012. Smith maintained a residence on Monument Road in Council Bluffs, as a storage location and distribution point for the drug trafficking organization. Prior to sentencing Smith, Chief Judge James Gritzner sentenced Smith’s five co-defendants.

The following were sentenced earlier this year to terms in prison for conspiracy to distribute marijuana:

30-year old Christopher Brandt of Council Bluffs, was sentenced to 36-months in prison; 40-year old David L. Lopez, Jr, of Omaha, was sentenced to 48-months in prison and 26-year old Nicholas Barnes, of Council Bluffs was sentenced to 48-month.

28-year old Dennis Smith, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced to 84-months in prison for conspiracy to distribute marijuana and money laundering. And, 29-year old Gene Smith, of Council Bluffs, was sentenced to 41-months in prison for maintaining a drug-involved premises.

The investigation was conducted by seven law enforcement agencies and prosecuted by the U-S Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Iowa.
