Clarinda teen arrested early Thu. morning

Authorities in Red Oak report the arrest early this (Thursday) morning of a Clarinda man. 19-year old Christian Lane Clark Latham was taken into custody following a traffic stop at around 1:45-a.m. near the intersection  of West Maple and North Broadway Streets, in Red Oak. An investigation determined Latham was driving with a revoked license. He was brought to the Montgomery County Law Enforcement Center and held on $1,000 cash bond.

Hamburg man arrested after female screams from vehicle

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reports one person was taken into custody following a rolling domestic incident on Interstate 29, Tuesday. Authorities say deputies were called to I-29 near Bartlett after they received word a female was screaming for help from a moving vehicle. An investigation after the vehicle was pulled over in the 2600 block of 310th Street near Hamburg, resulted in the arrest of the passenger, 26-year old Christopher James Wyland, of Hamburg.

Wyland was charged with Domestic Assault by Strangulation, Domestic Assault/Displaying a Dangerous Weapon, Domestic Assault/Serious Injury, Possession of  Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. He was also wanted on a warrant out of Pottawattamie County. Wyland was being held in the Fremont County Jail on $10,300 bond.

Accident on I-80 in Cass County Thu. Morning

Rescue crews from Marne and Atlantic along with Medivac Ambulance and law enforcement responded to a reported accident early this morning on Interstate 80. The crash was reported just after 4-a.m. with a person calling 9-1-1 saying there was a vehicle in the ditch and debris on the roadway. The accident happened at around the 51-mile marker eastbound. Officials reported there were no injuries. The lone occupant of the vehicle was said to have refused treatment at the scene.

Additional details were not immediately available.

 

Crash claims 1 life in Council Bluffs Wed. evening

A single-vehicle accident on Interstate 29 Wednesday evening has resulted in the death of the driver of the vehicle. According to Council Bluffs Police, the man was partially ejected from the vehicle during the rollover accident that happened at around 4:45-p.m. on I-29 northbound at the 55-mile marker, located between the North 35th and North 25th Street exits. Authorities do suspect speed and alcohol may have been factors in the crash.

A medical helicopter took the unidentified victim to Alegent Creighton Health Creighton University Medical Center where he later died. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

Northbound traffic on I-29 was blocked for a little more than two-hours following the crash.

CORNING, Iowa (AP) — A southern Iowa man faces multiple charges in connection to a vehicle shooting. The state Division of Criminal Investigation says 32-year-old Peter Wiley, of Creston, was arrested Wednesday morning.

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa (AP) — A Cedar Rapids woman has been accused of kicking a North Liberty police officer in the groin. Police say an officer pulled over a vehicle Tuesday night that was driving recklessly. Police say the driver of the car, 32-year-old Jessica Hatfield, smelled of alcohol. The Iowa Press Citizen reports Hatfield is accused of kicking an officer in the groin as he attempted to give her a field sobriety test.

EVANSDALE, Iowa (AP) — Roommates in Evansdale face charges in connection with allegedly trying to hide casino winnings from creditors. The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says 36-year-old Jeffrey S. Sampson hid more than $1,700 from a jackpot winning on a slot machine in July. Sampson owed more than $7,800 in back child support at the time of his winning, and the money should have been processed through a database that looks for such financial obligations.

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Drake has hired assistant Rick Fox to replace Chris Creighton, who was named the head coach at Eastern Michigan yesterday. Fox spent the past six seasons as the assistant head coach under Creighton for the Bulldogs, who compete in the Football Championship Series. He also coached the offensive line and special teams.

Creston Man Charged in Shooting

Authorities in Iowa say a Union County man was charged Wednesday morning with attempted murder and Going Armed with Intent, in connection with an incident in the Adams County town of Corning, Tuesday evening. 32-year old Peter Wiley, of Creston, was arrested by a Creston Police Officer after a chase and fiery crash, Wednesday.

Authorities were called to the Casey’s in Corning Tuesday, after a woman had reported being shot at. Upon the deputy’s arrival, contact was made with the alleged victim of the shooting, who reported that Peter Wiley had shot at the vehicle she was driving and then took off in an unknown direction of travel.

The information regarding Wiley was broadcast, and on Wednesday morning, a Creston police officer spotted his vehicle and attempted to stop it.  A short pursuit ensued that ended with Wiley’s car sliding into a ditch.  As officers were approaching the vehicle and assisting Wiley from it, the car caught fire and rapidly burned.  Wiley suffered burns to his hands. He was treated, and taken into custody.

As a result of the chase, Wiley faces additional charges in Union County. The charges include Felon in Possession of a Firearm, Eluding, and Hit and Run.  He was transported to Adams County jail where he remains awaiting his initial appearance. In addition to the Adams and Union County incidents, Peter Wiley is also suspected in a shooting incident earlier in the same evening in rural Page County.  His brother, 40-year old Raymond Wiley, was dropped off at the Shenandoah Medical Center with multiple gunshot wounds.  He was transported to an Omaha area hospital where he remains today.  His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is coordinating the investigation with assistance from the Page County Sheriff’s Office, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office, the Creston Police Department, the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, and the Iowa State Fire Marshall’s Office.

Clarinda Police Officers assaulted

Two Police Officers were assaulted in Clarinda, Tuesday night, after responding to a domestic disturbance. Police Chief Keith Brothers says at approximately 9:05 p.m. officers responded to a 911 call concerning a domestic disturbance taking place at Lot #29 in the Maplewood Trailer Court, 515 South 10th St. The female caller reported her husband was out of control and the female resident needed help from the police.

The male resident, 52-year old Ricky Dean Harrison, of Clarinda kicked one of the officers in the leg and kicked another officer in the stomach. Afterward, one of the officers deployed a Taser device on Harrison, who was subsequently taken into custody and charged with Assault on a Peace Officer and Resisting arrest. The officers were not injured during the altercation.

Harrison was booked into the Page County Jail and held without bond, pending an initial appearance before the Page County Magistrate. The Page County Attorney’s Office will review the incident for the filing of formal charges.

Shelby County road re-opens

The Shelby County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) reports a pipe replacement project under 2000th Street has been completed and the road has re-opened. The culvert in the 900 block of 2000th Street just west of Hazel Road and 2000th was closed on Monday, November 18th.

The closure met the approximate schedule of three weeks to finish.

Cass Supervisors approve appointment of a deputy sheriff

The Cass County Board of Supervisors, Wednesday, approved the appointment of a deputy sheriff, increasing the number of deputies by one. Sheriff Darby McLaren introduced the hire, who will begin his duties immediately. The new man is 23-year old Tyler Shiels.

Sheils was recently released from his duties with the West Des Moines Police Department so he could accept the position in Cass County. He took a few moments to address the board about his background, saying that he is originally from Urbandale and graduated from the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC).

Sheils is finishing up his Bachelor’s Degree from Upper Iowa University. He’s also served in the military since 2009. He says his girlfriends’ family is from this area, and he’s excited about getting started in his new position.

Arrest, and school bus accident in Atlantic

The Atlantic Police Department reports the arrest on Tuesday of 38-year old Christopher Harper. Harper, who’s from Atlantic, was taken into custody on a warrant for Failure to Appear. He was booked into the Cass County Jail but later posted bond.

And, an accident in Atlantic Tuesday night in the high school parking lot caused $2,150 damage, but no one was injured. Officials say a school bus driven by Laurence Tallman, of Atlantic, was westbound in the Atlantic High School parking lot attempting to make a left turn around a parked vehicle, when the bus was unable to make a wide enough turn. The left rear of the bus struck the left front corner of the vehicle, registered to Tracy Jacob, of Atlantic. The accident happened at around 10:15-p.m.
